To confuse everyone a little it seems FAW-VW are rebadging as well as facelifting the previous Golf generation Mk4 (Type 1J) as a Bora hatchback.

Why you ask well FAW-VW will be building the new Mk5 Golf/Rabbit soon.

By the looks of things the Golf will have the new Bora front and tinted rear lights from previous GTI, no major change to rear.

One interesting information. Golf IV is still being produced in South America also and for model year 2008 it received a major facelift. Interestingly, the redesign is not the same as the chinese. And the car kept the original name.

Is it really that much cheaper to make the Golf IV than the Golf V?

Golf V is very expensive to produce. Even VW admited that.
One of the goals of forthcoming Golf VI (which is hastenly being developed) is to reduce the production costs.

The production costs and therefore the price are the reason why Golf V is available in so few countries.

FAW-VW to launch remolded edition of Golf.

April 9, 2008 - Since FAW-VW put it into the market at the end of 2006, the Bora HS has not been well received by Chinese customers. The sales of all-new Bora HS vehicles in 2007 only hit a little more than 8,000 units. The company has now decided to remove its Bora HS from the production line and replace it with a new Golf edition -- a facelifted Bora.

FAW-VW, a joint venture between China's First Automotive Works Corp (FAW ) and German-based Volkswagen AG, is set to launch the remolded edition of its 4-generation Golf model. The new Golf model's design will integrate the rear features of the Bora HS and use some sporty exterior elements in its front part. The 4-G Golf models will be mass-produced this year, no longer made to order as before.

As an attractive and sporty name, Golf is able to hold great appeal for customers and boost the model’s sales. However, the Golf model has its much more merits of its own than the two-box Bora in the field of compact vehicles. But it pity that FAW-VW has not made public yet when it will launch the long-awaited 5-G Golf. Industry analysts said that 5-G Golf's roll-out in the near future is a remote possibility.

Actually, most models of FAW-VW have achieved great sales, but the launch of Bora HS has brought the company an albatross around its neck. Now the car-maker wants to scrap this white-elephant-like model less than two years after its birth.

Golf hatchback phased out of market.

December 16, 2008 - The Golf hatchback model made by FAW VW has been phased out of the joint venture's 4S stores, Beijing Business Daily reported today, citing a local dealer of FAW VW brands. The sales staff said that the old model is no longer produced as the new model will be coming to the market.

The Golf model has the classical craftsmanship of German-brand cars. Its seamless outer covering ensures the beautiful appearance, excellent hermeticity (air-tightness) and minimal wind resistance and noise. But unfortunately these good features have not bought out hot sales of the Golf hatchback. However, the high price and simple configurations partly account for its low sales.

As the (Changan) Ford Focus hatchback model is selling 10,000 units monthly and the (Guangzhou/GAC) Honda Fit hatchback is getting increasingly popular, China's booming hatchback market has seen its earliest hatchback model --FAW VW Golf -- falling far behind. FAW VW built and launched the Golf hatchback (the four-generation model) in mid-2003 as the first China-made 2.0L hatchback.

FAW VW has launched its Bora hatchback model to reverse the Golf's low sales, but this effort has not paid off, as most customers don't buy this replacement of Golf. Recent sources said that the joint venture is trying to introduce the latest six-generation Golf to the Chinese market. Reportedly the new Golf will be produced in China next year.

FAW VW dealers are disappointed by the poor sales of the current Golf hatchback, whose price had fallen down below 100,000 yuan ($14,700) before its phase-out. One of the dealers said that he expects FAW VW to bring in the latest Golf as soon as possible if its price is not prohibitively high.

Hello everybody - i would like to correct a lil mistake here - VW is not selling this car as Bora in CHina anymore, to get a bigger Brand Recog for the NEW GOLF in China the former Bora hatchback is now sold also as Golf IV.Only the first generation was sold as Bora and that had a very simple reason the VW Bora I sedan was a very popular car here( while the NEW BORA / still has some problems on the market as a friend from a local VW Dealership told me a couple of month ago)
After a short test drive with the GOLF Generation IV i can tell you at least that it is again a very basic version of the european model and also that its not really succesfull until now.

Do you perhaps know, why has FAW deciced to also introduce old look besides changing the name back? Was the new apperarance not accepted well by Chinese customers?

Hello Martin , yes i do know why - the Bora Golf IV was almost a complete flop and the chinese do not understand why they should pay that higher price for a car of the same class as the Peugeot 206/207 in china.They prefer middle class sedans like the long Bora I or Sagitar/Jetta 5 or the new VW's.The sales of the hatchback Bora were extremly bad here in China.My friend also told me that the chinese customers prefer either a sedan or somthing that has already a good reputation outside of china.
Thats why VW decidet to follow the customers wishes and after trying several Golf types as imports - they came to the solution to produce Golf IV first to bring in the name into the market and then follow with the second production line of the GOLF generation VI in china.

And by the way after making a few short phonecalls today i found out that VW started to sell the Import Version of the GOLF VI GTI alraedy since beginning of this year.Couldnt confirm it officially yet.
