: Geely International Activities
DIZZY 09-06-2005, 12:27 AM Alado is in talk with Geely Auto,
to bring in 20,000 units of
CK-1 model(CKD) to Malaysia.
If the rumours is true, they will sign
the agreement within 2 week times.
so,wait and see.
CK-1 model
actually is the result of geely work with
Daewoo International in design,and engineering.
CK-1 just go on sales recently in china market,
and had export some to west asia.
other than CK-1, Alado will bring in another
2 new model.
Look like Alado is has bigger plan
( not just selling chery car)
and Naza bring in Hafei car,
We will see more chinese car enter to malaysia
and asean market.
robtran 09-06-2005, 12:28 AM Have any pictures?
some pictures would be nice :)
DIZZY 09-06-2005, 01:42 PM Just understand that
Geely had release the news in their website,
so, is true, not rumour.
and will sign the agreement with Alado
on 29/5/05 Sunday.

please comment...suit malaysian taste?
if compare with A160?
mlytle 09-06-2005, 01:45 PM It kinda looks like an Accent, well 90's design is definately better than 70's or 80's ;)
Jason 09-06-2005, 01:46 PM looks like Alado is going to be your local Chinese car distributor. Wonder if it will also starts bringing in Chinese bikes and scooters too?
DIZZY 09-12-2005, 01:34 PM other than CK-1, i gues another model
will be the one which geely work with
one Italy design house,
actually geely is quite strong in R&D,
it use its own engine also, even though is
engine tech is not as advance as chery,
some of their
old models look like baby benz, or storngly
france influence, but CK-1 will be the changing point
for them,
of course,is not easier for them in malaysian
market, but i think china market is more tough than
malaysia ,if they can success in china, why not malaysia?
:D
trouble 09-12-2005, 01:38 PM I wouldn't say Malaysian market is tough it has a unique problem with Proton being around.
T-Rex 09-12-2005, 01:39 PM Proton creates complications now for the government which wants to be more open to free trade but has to find a way to protect Proton from being destroyed. Perodua is not a problem as they are willing to go with whatever the government wants to do be it open now or later (although, of course, they would not mind being protected longer!). Only Proton, now 20, is the one that is moaning and whining and so has still to be nursed like a baby (or a retarded person).
DIZZY 09-19-2005, 07:07 PM ya, agree.
anyway,since paklah had sign the
FTA with japan,is a turning point for
malaysia auto polocy.
but if we look at AFTA,bcoz of proton not ready,
and g'm had to postpone the AFTA.
i worry by the time is coming, maybe
proton may once again coz g'm to postpone again
its commitment on FTA.
SO,BETTER WAIT AND SEE
Regarding geely two other model,
1 is in collaboration with maggiora of italy,
another 1 is in colloboration with ruecker of germany
and i gues both models may introduce to malaysia amrket
later after CK-1.
Jason 09-27-2005, 04:32 PM the china car makers are making me dizzy. (no pun intended :p )

Look like an old Renault 19 with modified front headlight and butt :D Is this car still base on the Renault 19?? Same engine??
Anyone got the spec? :) ;)
i dont think geely's are supposed to look that attractive...hence the cheap prices and high savings :P
hazik 03-30-2006, 03:03 AM What models is Geely selling? And where can I buy Geely in Malaysia. Are all Geely's in Malaysia going to be made in malaysia to reduce taxes?
Admin 03-30-2006, 03:05 AM Geely to Assemble Cars in Malaysia
source: china.org
Hong Kong listed mainland car maker Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd yesterday signed a partnership agreement to assemble its own brand cars in Malaysia.
According to Geely vice-president Zhao Jie, production of Geely cars in the Southeast Asian country will kick off next March at a plant owned by Malaysian manufacturers Information Gateway Corporation SDN BHD (IGC).
Employing around 500 Malaysian workers, the plant will turn out 30,000 Geely branded cars next year with components supplied from China, Zhao said.
The first Geely car to be produced in Malaysia will be the 1.6-litre Freedom Cruiser, the company's latest model launched last month, he said.
Two new models, larger than the Freedom Cruiser, will be introduced at the Malaysian plant later, said Zhao.
Geely, 60.68 per cent owned by Li Shufu - one of the mainland's richest people - will be the third Chinese automaker to produce cars abroad.
Chery Automobiles, controlled by the local government in Wuhu, East China's Anhui Province, began to produce cars in Iran at the end of last year.
Chery is also in talks with Malaysia's Alado Automobiles to produce cars there.
Brilliance China Autos, another Hong Kong-listed mainland based car maker, signed an agreement with an Egyptian partner last month to produce cars in the North African country.
Egyptian production of its Zhonghua-brand sedans will begin at the end of August.
As well as producing cars in Malaysia, Geely's Zhao said the company would also export 10,000 cars to the country through IGC next year.
This year, Geely hopes to export 3,000 Haoqing compact cars to Malaysia, he added.
"The plant in Malaysia will be Geely's manufacturing base for Southeast Asia, which will target the whole market in the region," said Zhao.
Malaysia is one of 10 member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which have signed an agreement to slash tariffs on automobile exports to each other.
Tariffs on vehicles imported from ASEAN members were cut to 20 per cent at the beginning of this year from as much as 190 per cent in the past.
"Chinese-made cars will have good prospects in Southeast Asia, especially when China reaches a free trade agreement with ASEAN," said Liang Yangchun, an industry analyst with the State Council Development and Research Centre.
China is in talks with ASEAN to clinch an overall free trade agreement in 2010.
"However, Chinese car makers will only be able to play in the economy end of Southeast Asia's car market as many international auto giants, such as Toyota, already have a strong presence there," Liang told China Daily.
"To go abroad is a good way for some Chinese car makers to expand their business as they face mounting competition from the world's auto giants in the slowing domestic market," he added.
All of the world's major automakers have formed joint ventures in China.
Demands for cars in China will grow by 15 per cent to 2.6 million units this year, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers predicted.
The growth figures are the same as in 2004 but down from more than 70 per cent in 2003.
Zhao said Geely aims to double its overall car exports this year to 10,000 units.
In the first four months of this year Geely exported more than 3,000 cars.
zhp-cn 03-30-2006, 09:45 PM It was said that selling had been paused!

Before the year runs out, another Chinese brand identified as Geely will join the on going competition among automobile dealers in Nigeria.
By Moses Ebosele
Relatively new in the global scene, Geely is making its intention public barely two weeks after Chery Motors, another Chinese off spring unfolded plans to sell more cars, expand dealership and after sales facilities.
Founded in July 2002, Geely said it has been "committed to internationalisation ever since its foundation."
In 2003, according to information made available, Geely witnessed the first ever export of finished products in the company's history.
Already, the auto firm said it has established "an extensive" trading relationship with over 50 countries in different part of the world.
TBD International Nigeria Limited, the firm behind Geely in Nigeria said adequate resources are to be deployed to provide after sales back up for the different model.
TBD Vice President in charge of operation, Tony Daudu, said in an interview with the media that apart from three years warranty or 100 000 kilometre, potential customers would be entitled to one year "minor" free service.
"Within three years, we will build assembly plants somewhere in Nigeria, to create jobs for Nigerians as a return back to the community," said Daudu in a telephone interview from his base in Canada.
Products expected in Nigeria by Geely include HQ Series, MR Hatchback and Sedan, BL, CK, PU Pick-up among others.
pokershark 09-19-2006, 11:28 PM Rangs Group launches Chinese Geely car
FE Report
9/19/2006
Rancon Autos Limited, a company of the Rangs Group, Monday announced launching of Chinese Geely car in Bangladesh.
Addressing a news conference at the Dhaka Sheraton Hotel its Managing Director Romo Rouf Chowdhury said this Chinese economy car is affordable, especially by the middle class people, which will give them a leap in their social status.
The car has a better mileage with a lesser fuel consumption, which will provide the owners a cost efficient life as well, he said.
He said price of a brand new 1500 CC Geely car will be around Tk 11,50,000 and that of 1300 cc will be Tk 8,25,000.
Besides, he said, Rancon Autos Limited will offer a three-year comprehensive warranty, including the spare parts.
Chowdhury also said within the next five-six months his company will possibly introduce another model of Geely car at around Tk 0.5-Tk 0.6 million taka.
Shahriar Yousuf, Executive Director of Rangs Limited, said technology of Geely car is almost similar to that of Japanese Toyota car. Spare parts will be made available through the company's distributors across the country, he said.
Monir Uddin, Head of operation of Rancon Autos, said there is a loan facility for buyer of Geely car. Making Tk 250,000 as down payment, any one could own this car with monthly Tk 10,000-12,000 as installment. This car can be easily convertible to compressed natural gas (CNG), he mentioned.
Rancon Autos Limited has been given the sole distributorship of the Geely International Corporation of China in Bangladesh.

"GEELY Holding Group, China's biggest privately owned automaker, will start assembling cars in Indonesia after an initial plan to produce them in Malaysia was rejected by the government.
Geely will assemble its 1.1 liter, 1.3 liter and 1.5 liter sedans in a plant near Jakarta, said Cam Soh Thiam Hong, group executive chairman of Alado Corp, a Malaysian company that holds the sole distribution rights to sell Geely cars in Southeast Asia. It plans to start sales in November.
"The Indonesian market is huge," Soh said yesterday in an interview with Bloomberg News in Petaling Jaya, outside the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur. Alado "is in the final stage of concluding an agreement with an Indonesian partner," he said, declining to elaborate.
Geely, which would be the second Chinese automaker to assemble cars in Indonesia, plans to boost exports to two-thirds of its total sales by 2015. Chery Automobile Co started last week to sell cars in Indonesia, Southeast Asia's third-biggest vehicle market, pricing them among the cheapest in the country of 242 million people."
Source: Shanghai Daily
dragin 09-28-2006, 08:55 AM As recently as last April China Daily said that Geely would begin production this month in Malaysia, with an annual capacity of 30,000. But I guess since the Malaysian gov't wouldn't allow them to sell any more than 20% of these within the country, it made better sense to build them next door in Indonesia with no restrictions.
The location is not only a big market but a good jumping off point for other parts of SE Asia.

2nd Chinese car brand makes entry with cheapest sedan
By Christopher Tan - OCtober 31, 2006
The Straits Times
JUST four months after Chery Automobile became the first Chinese car brand to enter Singapore, compatriot Geely Holdings is here.
Entrepreneur Peter Kwee's Group Exklusiv, which relinquished its Renault agency recently, has secured the Geely franchise and will launch it at its Kampong Ubi showroom on Nov 7.
Group Exklusiv is targeting first-time car buyers with the Geely CK - the cheapest family sedan in Singapore. The 1.5-litre manual version is expected to be priced from $38,000 (with COE), 10 per cent less than the Kia Rio, the least expensive sedan here.
Group Exklusiv executive director Kevin Kwee said:
'If you buy one as an off-peak car, you pay only $200 or so a month.''
And because Geely spare parts are 'very competitive', insurance premium for the CK is around $600 a year, even without no-claims discount. That is almost half the rate of an equivalent car.
The car is also said to be frugal, covering 100km on 6.5 litres of fuel - or 30 per cent better than a comparable 1.5-litre.
'In China, you will not succeed as a carmaker if your engines are not fuel efficient,'' Mr Kwee said, explaining that buyers - largely first-timers who switch from bicycles - are extremely sensitive to running costs.
Geely started in 1986 as a maker of refrigerators. It ventured into making motorcycles in 1994 and cars in 1997. Today, it is China's largest independent carmaker, with sales surpassing 250,000 units this year - double the volume of Malaysia's Proton, which started in 1985.
Going by the brisk sales of rival Chery in Singapore, Mr Kwee is confident that the Geely will succeed here.
In its first three months, from July to September, Chery sold 135 of its micro-mini QQ, the only model available here, outdoing its closest rival Perodua of Malaysia (110 units) and other established brands like Citroen, Skoda and Ssangyong.
Mr Kwee expects to sell 1,000 cars a year initially and gain 'at least' 10 per cent of the market share in 'the next two to three years'.
But research firm Economist Intelligence Unit said in a recent report that Chinese carmakers will need 10 to 15 more years to be competitive in developed markets.
Mr Lee Nian Tjoe, associate editor of motoring magazine Torque, said: 'Certainly, Geely has aspirations to be the new people's car. It is not quite there yet, but it will be.''
Mr Kwee expects an automatic CK as well as two more models to arrive next year
nice for geely, i think great wall motor will be 3rd after geely
renyeo 11-20-2006, 11:33 PM I believe Peter Kwee is looking at the Roewe brand or SAIC cars.
pokershark 11-22-2006, 11:54 PM i dont think geely will do as well as chery in singapore
imoto 12-03-2006, 09:44 PM In Singapore, Chery is selling only the QQ, maybe the MPV next year. Geely is selling the sedan CK and MK later. So unless Chery brings in the A516, they are competing in different segments.
chinoy54 01-01-2007, 07:06 PM do you know why the geely HQ was not considered in the introduction into singapore? this model would have been the counterpart of the chery QQ.

Jakarta, Indonesia (AHN) - This July, Chinese automaker Geely International Corp. will be introducing its Geely CK sedan in Indonesia, in anticipation of the country's expanding automotive market. The sedan will come in three engine variants and will sell starting at 80 million rupiah ( $9,095 USD) to 95 million ($10,800 USD).
"Our idea is to supply the market with a quality product at an affordable price," said Geely International president director George Zhao.
martin_krpan 05-23-2007, 02:15 PM The Geely CK1, who used to sport a W203 Mercedes Benz C-Class front end but has been recently revised has just made it’s debut in Indonesia last week. It is sold by PT Gaya Motor, an associate of Information Gateway Corp Sdn Bhd owned by Tan Sri Cam Soh Thiam Hong.
The car, available in 1.3 liter and 1.5 liter form, will be assembled in Indonesia, and 2,000 units is expected to be sold over the next 12 months. PT Gaya Motor has an agreement with Geely Holding Group for the manufacturing, assembly and international marketing of Geely vehicles in Indonesia. PT Gaya Motor will initially assemble CKD packs of the car in Indonesia, but later will start using more local components as volume picks up.
Geely originally wanted to establish a manufacturing base in Malaysia with an investment of RM100 million together with it’s partner Information Gateway Corp Sdn Bhd, but decided to pull out and choose Indonesia instead because of the discouraging National Automotive Policy.

Bandar Seri Begawan - The recently launched China-made Geely CK 1.5 manual drive seems to have made a good impact on Bruneians. Ten out of 12 units of the first shipment have already been snapped up.
"This is due to its very affordable price. It allows more people to be able to afford a practical, brand new car," said John Too, senior sales and marketing manager of GHK Motors Sdn Bhd.
Costing less than $15,000, this car comes fully equipped with electric windows, airconditioning, a CD player, safety belt features, a remote control and an automatic security central locking system.
"The reason why this vehicle comes at such an affordable price is because production costs and labour in China is cheap," he said.
Instead of actually developing and manufacturing its own engine, the manufacturers bought Toyota Soluna engines fully approved by Toyota, he added. "For a 1.5 engine vehicle, the public can now pay a monthly bank repayment at just over $200, one of the lowest repayment amounts in the region."
The vehicle has also been distributed in Singapore, according to Daha Trading Sdn Bhd senior marketing manager James Chin.
"In Singapore, most of the cars go through a strict quality test before it is allowed to be sold in the market. People there look for quality and they have high expectations of vehicles," he said.
The sedan is made by China's Geely international, which was founded in 1986 by entrepreneur Li Shufu. The company is based in Huangyan, Luqiao Taizhou city, Zhjiang Province.
Initially set up as a maker of refrigerator parts, the firm went into car manufacturing in 1997, and they are currently in the midst of a global expansion, with plans to set up an assembly plant in the United States.-- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
bronzebeauty 06-15-2007, 12:37 PM Pan Fil Inter Trade Newsletter- The China leader for automobile-GEELY, that took Detroit, USA by storm has now landed in the Philippine soil on 14June 2007.The local partner, Pan Fil Inter Trade Co. Inc.got the Exclusive Agreement of Distribution/Service within the Philippine Territory in a General Agreement with Franchise Rights signed by its Director(China), Chung Lung Wu(Albert Wu) and partner Geely International Corporation last 16 April 2007 in Shanghai China.
The local partner, Pan Fil Inter Trade Co. Inc choose the Subic Bay Freeport Zone as its entry point because of its strategic location and efficiency of government personnel handling the facility. Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, Bureau of Customs and the Land Transportation Office are all to be commended for facilitating the entry of Geely Automobile in the Philippines. The Liberalization of Trade being espoused by no less than President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in her Trade Missions in China and the strong peso are also the reason for the corporate decision of its local partner to venture in the industry.
For years now, Geely has been exported in over 50 countries in Africa, the Middle East,Central America and South America. Joycelin Torres Rodriguez, President and CEO of its local partner Pan Fil shares the view of Director Wu,"by making GEELY available to the Filipinos, we are giving hope to every Filipino who dreams of owning his first new car.Filipinos are known to be dreamers....now owning a new car is no longer a dream but a reality!"
Bringing two models in the Territory, CK and MR are to be sold in the market at around P450,000($9574) and P350,000($7446) respectively. With the entry of this cars in the market it will be the most affordable car to be launched in the Philippines in the recent years. Chairman Maricel V. Wu and Marketing Director Ruth D. Roque strongly believe that Geely will have a strong impact and will enjoy a good market share in the Philippines since Filipinos are known to be good price hunters.Dealers are lining up waiting to be accredited believing in the quality of the car and the bigger market it may have due to its reasonable price.
With a very good car exported by Geely International Corporation in countries throughout the world, its advent in the Philippine Market is highly appreciated.
passionate_rider 06-15-2007, 10:06 PM Geely is not only taking the Philippines by storm like Detroit, its shaking the Philippines with intensity that moves people to experience what could be a ride of their lives!
I for one, are many of the excited buyers of this amazing car. Two weeks ago I pre-ordered a CK and I think that its really beyond the value.
Currently, second hand cars are the IN thing here which i figured does not serve buyers its real value. Not to mention the life threatening consequence of having converted right-hand drives!
I reckon, these dealers should divert into selling Geely Cars instead.Hehehe!
mememe 06-16-2007, 06:58 AM I hope Geely will do well as this article says. Geely is doing ok in Singapore atm, so Geely should have learnt the lessons and do much better in phillipines.
martin_krpan 06-16-2007, 07:27 AM Talking about Philippines - what do think about Philippine Utility Vehicle?
The Philippines is a very small market, and most people can't afford a new car. There are several businesses in the country, especially around the city of Cebu, that specialize in converting used Japanese vans into pickup trucks. Public transportation is partly handled by jeepneys, minibus-like contraptions with fiberglass bodies. Seven-seat closed light commercial vehicles are popular here and all over Southeast Asia. Assembly operations here by Toyota, Ford and some other companies exist, but with small output numbers.
The Motor Vehicle Parts Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (MVPMAP) last year launched the local production project that has led to the creation of this utility vehicle. Dreamco, the local assembler of Chinese Foton trucks, provided the chassis and a 2.1-liter diesel engine from China, and hundreds of local companies submitted other bits and parts.
The finished prototype was unveiled at the 109th Independence Day Festival here earlier this week. It appears sturdy but behind 21st-century standards in the quality department. MVPMAP has high ambitions for local production, and Dreamco is all set to manufacture the PhUV. But there's no final word yet on the fate of this intriguing idea.

mememe 06-16-2007, 09:16 AM ya I saw this at a fillipino forum and God a lot of fillipino members were flaming this car, complaining like mad. They cussed down this fillipino made PHUV, they said it is cheaply made, cheap interior, the manufacturers are looking down to the fillipino buyers...etc..etc
I can give you the link to that forum if you wish :)
But seriously I think this fillipino made PHUV looks pretty nice outside, I kinda like it.
martin_krpan 06-16-2007, 02:02 PM yes please, give the link to that forum. I'd like to see some more photos, especially the interior.

Here is the link for you mate. The interior is on the next few pages
Enjoy :)
martin_krpan 06-17-2007, 02:28 PM Thanks mememe. The interior looks disastrous and outdated! Who is going to buy this vehicle? I rather chose Geely or any used jeepney.
boogiecat 06-27-2007, 02:58 AM So Geely is now officially in the Philippines.I remember back then that last year Dreamco(owned by forumer Chinoy54) decided to bring a Geely HA 1.0(based on the Daihatsu Charade) and priced it at 350K(same price as the CK) and alot of people didn't love the vehicle(the first demo units had big defects) so decided to drop the Geely brand and instead concentrated on the Nanjing Yuejin and Foton vehicles instead...
And now there's a new distributor in the Philippines(Pan Fil Inter Trade Corp) though Geely won't really stand a chance against Chery(Iseway Motors Phils) which is coming this July.
Geely had been in contact over the last three years with Daihatsu importer Talcar Ltd.
15 Jul 07 17:59
Chinese car manufacturer Geely is in advanced talks with an Israeli franchisee to market its vehicles in Israel. Geely had been in contact over the last three years with Daihatsu importer Talcar Ltd. Talcar held a letter of intent by the Chinese manufacturer of its intention to grant exclusivity as soon as import becomes possible, and it even imported a number of vehicles on a temporary basis for the purpose of market research. However, the two companies have not been in contact with each other in recent months and Geely has begun talks with other potential franchisors in Israel.
Wendy 07-24-2007, 12:04 PM CAUTION:
be careful of china cars, especially geely brand. my husband was posted to shanghai for work and while there we bought a geely car. it was quite cheap, about 60,000 chinese renminbi (about 12,000 singapore dollars). less than a year and before clocking 10,000km, the car needed extensive overhaul. we had to write it off as a VERY bad investment.
Sarmad 07-24-2007, 12:25 PM Wendy which model you bought? CK or HQ or any other?
BringIt 07-24-2007, 03:00 PM ...we bought a geely car. it was quite cheap, about 60,000 chinese renminbi (about 12,000 singapore dollars). less than a year and before clocking 10,000km, the car needed extensive overhaul
Since it happened less than a year, it's covered under warranty, right??? So what's the big deal? (Seriously)
Had it happened outside of warranty, how much is an overhaul anyway? If the combined cost of the overhaul+initial price is still less than a more reputable competitor, what's so bad about it?
(Believe me, I'm not justifying crappy quality, just looking at the situation from a financial point of view.)
mememe 07-24-2007, 03:53 PM Indeed, I heard quite a number of complaints about Geely's quality, I remember one said Geely car's exhaust pipe fell off on the road. You see I am not sure, probably it is a made up story but who knows :)
Btw Wendy, please do not generalise this for all Chinese made cars, not all Chinese made cars are like Geely. Chery QQ is really welcomed in many countries, so far I never heard any complaints about Chery QQ from those in Singapore or any from Pakistani, except for its high fuel consumption, other than that they said Chery QQ is really a comfortable cars even in long journey, compact, no major breakdowns or anything.
SadRabbit 07-29-2007, 02:35 PM I would say Chery Cars are much better made so hence, ya, i think chery cars are here to stay in Singapore for a long time. As for Geely, I am really not sure. I had a faculty mate who bought a Geely CK cause it was kinda of cheap. It turned out fine the first few months but it started acting up, like weird engine noises started to appear. On board electronics were also soon malfunctioning after they fixed the engine. Yup, sure there is warranty, but in the end, he got so fed up about having to always send the car for repairs that he scrapped his Geely and bought himself a Kelisa, a much smaller less powerful malaysian car but without the trouble of always having to send it to the repairs.
mememe 07-29-2007, 11:03 PM Agree with sadrabbit. Yes I heard a lot of complaints about Geely and other Chinese manufacturers but Chery is one of the few that people actually harshly complain about and almost no complaints at all, except for its rather high fuel consumption as I said before

j19021974 10-06-2007, 12:35 AM Hi, I currently owns a Picanto for 3 years in Singapore. Planning to look at the CK today (06/10/07). My Point of view is that we must test the car physically then we know how it is. No point keep 'hear say hear say.'
When I bought my Pica 3 yrs back, ppl keep telling me, KOrean car good meh? Troublesome leh, this and that. But frankly speaking, if it is not my family is growing, I dun mind having my Silver baby for the next 5 years since I had throw in so much $ in modding it till the FC is satisfied.
I would suggest those members, if your country has this thing call the 'Broquet' go get it. I had 8 pellets in my petrol tank and it helps in my FC.
Nice can u post some pics of it.
i like to se it

pokershark 10-24-2007, 08:59 PM Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd is eager to tie up with foreign car and parts makers, including Japanese ones, to enter a new phase of growth, its Chairman Li Shufu said in Japan ahead of the Tokyo Motor Show. A Reuters report carried by Automotive News Europe said Geely expected to double its production capacity in 2008, and thereafter to establish assembly facilities in North American and Europe. Geely is unusual among its major Chinese competitors in having no joint venture operations with Western or Japanese manufacturers.
Chinese car maker Geely Group Co Ltd yesterday said it plans to launch an assembly plant in the north Philippines’ Subic Bay Freeport Zone, for the production of its affordable Geely cars.
The company, through its local unit Geely Cars Philippines, said 2,000 units of its hatchback and sedan models will be shipped through Subic, for dealers and customers in Metro Manila and other places nearby, Philippines television network ABS-CBN News reported yesterday.
The cars, priced at US$9,140 for the 1.1-liter MR hatchback, and US$11,570 for the 1.3-liter CK sedan, will be brought to the Subic distribution hub tax-paid, just like the car imports of mainstream distributors.
The firm plans to eventually open 12 dealerships in the country by next year. Apart from this, it is also planning a separate assembly plant in Subic for its semi-knock down units to take advantage of the incentives being offered by the freeport zone.

May 28, 2008 - Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd, the listed unit of China's largest privately owned car maker, will begin to sell vehicles in Turkey later this year, an industrial website reported recently.

As of today, Turkey is the world's 17th-largest auto manufacturer. Its automotive production plants have a combined annual production capacity of 1.5 million vehicles. It is the European Union's leading manufacturer of passenger buses and third in trucks and commercial vehicles.

mememe 07-17-2008, 09:35 PM China's Geely Has Global Auto Ambitions
July 17, 2008
With the automaker's winning affordable-car formula under pressure at home, Chairman Li is pushing hard for a breakthrough on the world stage
As a boy growing up in rural China, Li Shufu was fascinated by cars. The son of rice farmers in the southeastern province of Zhejiang, Li started making model autos when he was only 8 years old. "I used mud to make cars and tires, big ones," says Li, 44. That boyhood hobby paid off well for Li, who grew up to become the founder and chairman of one of the most important automakers in China, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group.
Now Li has an even loftier goal: Transform Geely into a force in the auto industry, not just in China but worldwide. With gasoline well over $4 a gallon in the U.S., he figures the timing may be right for American consumers to consider inexpensive, fuel-efficient Chinese-made names like Geely. While Detroit giants like General Motors (GM) are losing billions of dollars, slashing jobs, and shutting factories, Geely is taking advantage of solid growth in its home market, the world's second-largest, to expand into new markets. Last month, for instance, Li announced tentative plans to open a $500 million plant in Mexico to produce vehicles for the U.S. and Latin America.
Not bad for a company that is only a dozen years old. While a teenager, Li heeded Deng Xiaoping's call to help reform the country by opening a photo shop with his brothers in his hometown of Taizhou, Zhejiang. He went into the refrigerator components business in 1984, began manufacturing wall- and floor-boarding materials a few years later, and in 1994 started making motorcycles. In 1998, Li produced his first car, the Geely HQ hatchback, a hit that keeps selling.
A Changing Chinese Car Market
Li's company has succeeded largely by keeping costs down and offering the most affordable cars in China. For instance, Geely's best-selling four-door sedan, the Free Cruiser, retails from $6,300 to $6,900. Last year, Geely sold 217,000 passenger cars in China, making it the No. 2 domestic producer with a 4.1% market share. The biggest Chinese automaker is state-affiliated Chery, which last year held a 7.1% market stake (BusinessWeek.com, 7/11/08). That compares to GM's 10.1% share of the passenger market and Volkswagen's 17.5%.
Geely's winning formula is under strain at home, though. Chinese car buyers are becoming wealthier, making higher-end models more practical for many consumers. At the same time, brands such as the Chevrolet Spark, Volkswagen (VOWG.DE) Golf, and Hyundai Elantra are pressing Geely at the low end. The company's unit sales rose only 6% last year, vs. 21% for passenger vehicles overall.
Confronted by tougher competition in China, Li isn't sitting still. He plans to roll out an additional 15 models, including a hybrid, by 2010. Along with his plans to open the overseas manufacturing plant in Mexico, Geely has assembly operations in Indonesia, Russia, and Ukraine. And things already are looking up for the company, with sales surging 27.2% to 107,000 cars in the first half of the year (faster than the overall sedan market, which is up 16.7%), driven in part by exports of the Free Cruiser as well as the Geely KingKong ($7,500-$10,100), a four-door 1.5- to 1.8-liter sedan, and Vision ($9,700-$15,300), a 1.8-liter four-door sedan.
Lofty Sales Goal
Li also has pushed for a reorganization of the company. On July 1, the Shanghai-listed subsidiary acquired five operating associates from the privately held parent company. That should allow the publicly traded part of the group to consolidate numbers in its financial results, better reflecting Geely's overall business. "The acquisition should significantly enhance the group's corporate structure," a spokesman said in a statement, "thus resulting in a more streamlined operation with much improved operating efficiency and much better transparency."
Restructuring at home might help, but cracking the American market will be a vastly longer-term project. Chinese automakers don't have much of a track record selling in the U.S., and even the likes of Toyota (TM), Honda (HMC) and Hyundai struggled at first to win over skeptical American consumers. Still, Li intends to sell 2 million cars by 2015, and he's confident he can thrive against global competition. "Geely's technology, quality, and service are not that different from Toyota, Honda, GM, or Ford," he boasts, "but the price of our cars is 50% cheaper."

Do you think the line in bold sound very ridiculous ?
Rally Red Lancer GTS 07-18-2008, 08:18 PM mememe-we need more comparative data to decide if the statement of Geely's strength of quality holds up against Honda, Toyota and Ford and GM. Right now they might hold up against someone like Chrysler, but even that is in question, really, until we learn more about the Geely automotive product. But, I am totally in agreement to the idea of bringing Chinese cars to the U.S. Bring 'em on!
I mean, for instance, if a small Geely 4-door sedan would cost an American consumer around $8,000 intead of a Toyota Yaris 4-door sedan for $15,000-$16,0000, Americans would have to take notice of that. And if Geely can produce solid evidence of a good safety rating and score, so much the better for their brand. Reliability and value for the price paid is really key here.
martin_krpan 09-08-2008, 11:39 AM September 8, 2008 - Chinese privately owned carmaker Geely Auto will see its first batch of 500 sedans go on sale in Turkey in October, said xinhuanet.com today citing a Geely dealer in the country.
The Turkish dealer under Anadolu Group Co, one of the famous companies in Turkey, said that his company has opened 20 Geely 4S stores nationwide and has built an extensive after-sales service network. The Chinese-made Geely cars are of high quality and low price and have huge market potentials in Turkey. The sales of Geely cars, priced at 16,000 New Lira ($12,800) or more, are expected to reach 5,000 units in Turkey in 2009.
Geely Auto is the second independent Chinese carmaker after Chery Auto to sell vehicles in the Turkish market. The Geely sedans to be sold in Thurkey later this year are the low-emission KingKong and Freedom Cruiser models.
Anadolu Group's dealer of Geely cars, also the Turkish agent of Isuzu, Kia, LAD and the Korean LS tractor, has obtained the power of attorney of Geely Auto, and has gotten its government's licenses for selling Geely vehicles and providing their after-sales services.
Another homegrown Chinese automaker Chery already entered the Turkish market last year with Mermerler Group, selling the brand QQ-car for 12,000 New Lira.

mememe 11-06-2008, 04:23 PM Chinese Geely enters Europe via Turkey
Thursday, November 6, 2008
Distribution of Geely, the second Chinese automobile brand to enter the Turkish market, is about to begin.
Chery was the first Chinese automobile to enter Turkey with the Mermerler Group, which lead the way for others. Now, as of mid-November, Turkey's Anadolu Group is planning to launch the distribution of Geely, the first independent automobile manufacturer in the People's Republic of China, which started production 10 years ago.
Turkey will be an important contributor towards Geely's target of becoming a global giant, said Shufu Li, founder of the firm. “We are stepping into Europe via the Turkish market. We will learn a lot about the European market from Turkey and our distributor, the Anadolu Group,” he said.
“We will develop our European strategy based on Geely's development in Turkey, which has the same standards as Europe. Should the Anadolu Group also approve, we would like to expand together into other European markets.”
Li noted that Turkey would be the priority candidate for the firm if production demand emerges in Europe.
The Anadolu Group's subsidiary Anadolu Araçlar & Ticaret will begin selling two models of Geely in mid-November. The company, which will sell the brand at 25 outlets nationwide, will add five new stores in 2009, said Kamil Eser, chairman of the automotive group at Anadolu Holding.
The firm has changed the names of the models they will be exporting to Turkey, he said. “In Turkey, we will import the CK model under the name of Echo, and MK as Familia. The price of Echo in the B segment will start from $10,000.”
“We are targeting people for whom it would normally be difficult to purchase new cars. We have invested in Geely's future. It is not very important for us to make profits for the time being. Based on developments in the first year, we may reach a sale figure of between 3,000 - 5,000 units. We expect a market share of 1 percent to 1.5 percent.”
Geely, which ranks as the eight top-selling company in China, aims to enter the top three soon, Li said. The firm plans to increase its annual car production capacity from 300,000 units to 2 million units within the upcoming seven years, he said, and added,
“We will increase the number of our factories from six to nine by 2012.” The firm aims to invest $15 billion within seven years.
Geely, which currently features five models, will gradually add new models, Li said, noting that “the market will have 42 models by 2015.” Besides its existing categories, the firm also plans to add new segments, such as MPV, a mid-size sedan, SUV, Minivan, luxurious sedan, he added.
“We would like to be a global brand just like Toyota. We will make the products at locations close to the market, and develop our models and technology in line with demand. We will produce many models at a low cost, just like Toyota.”
Li believed that the global crisis may create opportunities for Chinese firms. “While global giants are losing blood, we are able to control the situation. The crisis may create an opportunity for China. We would like to have a voice in global markets by producing cheap, quality and high technology vehicles. We do not want to purchase international brands that face distress in this climate.”

Shanghai, April 8 (Gasgoo.com) Geely Auto, a Chinese-brand carmaker based in Zhejiang province, plans to assemble MK-2 and CK-2 sedans at Ukrain starting this July.
The two Geely car models will be produced at Kremenchugsky Avtosborochny Zavod (KrASZ), the Ukrainian assembler of AvtoVAZ, Ssangyong Motor Co and China's First Auto Works Group Corp (FAW Group).
KrASZ's General Manager Nikolay Chernysh says the auto maker is testing the two car models currently and will start the assembly of the cars by July.
KrASZ started to assemble Geely CK sedans from semi-knocked-down kits sourced from China back in 2007.
Geely ranks as the second best-selling brand in Ukraine after selling 1,437 units this January. The top selling car at Ukrainian market is Lada brand from Russia's AvtoVAZ.

martin_krpan 05-27-2009, 04:44 PM Geely aims to retake Singapore auto sales.
China automotive Geely Singapore exclusive distributor Exklusiv Auto told Nanyang100.com that it believes Geely has the potential to regain leadership in the economic cars segment sales in Singapore although currently under assaults from Korean and other China brand cars.
“Singapore automotive market is one of the most competitive in the world. Although there is only 4 million over population, almost all major brands of automotives are sold here” said Mr Kevin Lee, Market Manager for Exklusiv Auto in a recent exclusive interview with Nanyang100.com.
Lee: "Three year ago, the number of European cars sales dropped to just 15% of total Singapore car sales which Mercedez and BMW occupied 10%. We observed this trend and anticipated that European cars sales in Singapore will get smaller. We begin to consider stopping the sales of Rover and replace with an Asian brand. Geely was one of the brands we considered seriously.”
Exklusiv Auto was the official importer and distributor of Rover cars in Singapore before they decided to drop the dealership.
Lee reviewed that the decision to take on China made cars; an unknown brand here then, was done after reviewing historically how Japanese and Korean cars enter the Singapore market.
“(Just like Japanese and Korean cars), China cars will soon be able to compete head-on with other established brands” said Lee.
According to Lee, the positive market acceptance for China made cars was a surprise to them. They managed to sell more than 500 cars in the first year.
Based on Nanyang100 research, total China made cars sold in Singapore for that year was more than 1,000 vehicles.
“There exists a demand for economic car in Singapore. People just want to get from point A to point B. They need a transport and not a luxury car. Geely fit nicely to address this need” said Lee.
The entry of Geely into the local market has captured market attention, in particularly the Korean cars. With the weak Korean won and desire to compete for this segment of the market, prices for Korean cars dropped more than 20% in February this year resulting in the doubling of Korean cars sales from 500 units to more than 1500 units for February.
Because of low pricing and other factors, Geely car sales for second half of 2008 was reduced by half, “said Lee.
Beside the issue of pricing, Geely cars also suffered from lack of local climatisation. The car was not customized for our local condition leading to issues and bad publicity.”
"Quality issues with other China made products, such as the recent tainted milk also affect our sales,” said Lee.
In this regards, Lee said that Exklusiv Auto has been working closely with its principle Geely Auto to address some of the short comings. Additional marketing and spare parts support have been allocated.
Lee estimates that there are around 430,000 households with children and have a combined income of $2K to $6K that are yet to own a car. This is still a sizeable market for car sales.
With the right strategy, Lee believes Geely should be able to regain market leadership irrespectively of the Global financial crisis.
"We wants to exceed 2008 sales” said Lee.

mememe 05-28-2009, 07:48 AM ^^ Geely better improve the quality of cars in Singapore though, I heard quite a number of funny incidents happened to Geely cars in Singapore like exhaust pipe fell off on the road lol.
KiwiGuy 07-08-2009, 09:35 PM Geely might be entering the Australian market soon. Ony rumours though, but if they do decide to enter, I suggest they should bring in the newer models they have rather than try and use older copycat models that everyone didn't want.
Maybe we might get them here in New Zealand as well. They say that the first model to be launched is the Panda, which is currently undergoing safety tests and has now got six airbags.
cktlcmd 07-29-2009, 03:07 PM Geely's Car Dealership in Mandaluyong, Manila, Philippines just closed. Someone told me as I was asking about the Geely Panda and where I can find a dealership to test drive the car.
KiwiGuy 09-21-2009, 09:52 PM Geely holding talks with Magna over possible Opel
From China Car Times:
Geely is fast becoming a rising star on the international stage with talks of it buying out Volvo from Ford, and now Geely is holding talks with Magna on entering in on any potential Opel bid.
Magna is ready to sign a deal with GM which will make them a majority stake owner in the European brand, GM will remain a minority stake, the deal is set to be signed next month according to reports.
A Geely stake in a Magna controlled Opel is likely to be a minority one, and would unlikely give it access to the technology that it craves to become a world car maker.
A comment from Geely executives has yet to be reached, but they recently denied that they are preparing a bid for Ford’s Volvo brand.
martin_krpan 10-05-2009, 01:14 PM Lada spots rival Geely in rear-view mirror - in Cuba
Chinese cars make some headway, but Cubans say Lada's no pushover.
After three decades as the favoured car of Cuban nomenklatura, the austere, Russian-built Lada has spotted a Chinese rival in its rear-view mirror.
Ministers, communist officials and police are switching their Ladas, with its stiff manual steering, for the smooth hydraulics of the Chinese-made Geely CK, a modern sedan that symbolises the island's new alliance with Beijing.
China, now Cuba's second-largest trading partner behind only Venezuela, has shown an ability to quickly penetrate and dominate markets around the world with many of its products.
But Cubans say their love for Ladas, which are probably the most visible legacy of the country's Cold War alliance with the Soviet Union, will keep the cars on Cuban roads.
'I do not think it will be easy to displace the Lada,' said David Pena, a 39-year old mechanic who recently founded Cuba's Russian Automobile Club. 'For us this car is like a family member.' Cuba is well known for the vintage American cars that prowl its streets, relics of pre-revolutionary Cuba and rolling tributes to the islanders' mechanical inventiveness.
But the truth is they are greatly outnumbered by Ladas, of which there are an estimated 100,000 in Cuba, compared to somewhere around 60,000 of the old US cars.
The Geelys, based on a Daewoo design and powered by a 1.5-litre engine licensed from Toyota Motor Corp, have begun showing up with increasing frequency on Havana streets.
They have a sleek and stylish look and come with air conditioning, electric windows and CD players.
The Chinese cars are so far showing up in very limited numbers, as government vehicles and rental cars, but their ranks are expected to increase in a sign of China's growing economic relationship with Cuba and business interests on the island.
Geely, China's biggest privately owned car maker whose worldwide strategy has been founded on exporting low-cost vehicles, shipped more than 1,500 cars to Cuba this year through June, the Miami Herald reported on its website.
But the no-frills Lada, based on the Fiat 124 from the 1960s, has become a cult object in Cuba for both its utility and its enduring presence.
Pena and dozens of other Lada die-hards gather every month in Lenin Park on the outskirts of Havana to talk about and show off their cars.
The Soviet Union took Cuba under its wing in 1961, two years after Fidel Castro rose to power in a 1959 revolution, and until its implosion in 1991 showered the communist-led island with billions of dollars in subsidies and goods, including the Lada.
From the time it arrived in the 1970s, the car, so spartan it does not even have hubcaps, was a good fit for economically challenged Cuba.
It was inexpensive, and earned a reputation as a durable car that, when repairs were needed, was easy to repair.
'Anyone can fix it with just a piece of wire,' said Carlos, a veteran mechanic in Havana. 'If you ask a Cuban he will tell you he does not want to exchange his Lada for anything in the world.' There are those who doubt that the new Geelys, flashier but not imbued with the Lada's image of tank-like solidity, will last as long on Cuba's pot-holed streets.
'They are changing (our Ladas for Geelys) but I don't think the Chinese cars will be as resistant as the Lada,' said a police officer leaning against his white Lada patrol car along Havana's sea wall. 'Only time will tell.' Cars tend to be cherished in countries where they are not easy to get, which is the case in Cuba.
A government minister must give approval for someone to buy a car legally, and in most cases even when it is purchased, it still belongs to the state.
Only people who bought a car before the revolution or those who afterward were granted the right to purchase one for personal or political achievements actually own their vehicles.
For those who get permission, a new, basic Lada can be bought for the equivalent of about US$5,000. A black market exists, where the purchaser buys the car for about three times the normal price, but it remains registered in the name of the original owner.
Cubans show their love for Ladas by making them a showcase for creativity.
Some have covered their dashboards with precious woods, installed powerful engines with souped-up carburettors or even reinvented the original Soviet design by welding together two cars to build an improbable Lada limo.
'Our wives often complain because we dedicate so much time and money to our Ladas,' said Manuel Ares, who is vice-president of the Russian Automobile Club.
The cars on Cuban streets reflect Cuba's political history, with the long Soviet presence, a lingering American influence and, currently, growing ties with China.
Russia and Cuba have been warming their old friendship, which may soon show up on Cuban roads.
Russia has talked about building a Lada plant in Cuba to sell cars throughout Latin America, but the project has been put on hold by the global recession.
In the meantime, there are plans to import thousands of new Ladas to Cuba, the Russians have said.
For Carlos the mechanic, that only confirms what he already believes.
'The Lada will never die (in Cuba),' he said, 'It has become a classic.' -

Cuban police are switching from Ladas to Geelys
wxw30 10-05-2009, 10:47 PM Nice article!
dragin 10-06-2009, 09:25 AM This adds to the Chery units that went to Cuban Ministry of Tourism, shipments of Great Wall pickups, and even a Great Wall Hover limo presented to Castro.
This will be a good proving ground for all of them. And I'm sure the feedback will make its way north to the Americans.
martin_krpan 01-18-2010, 11:13 AM China Invades Small Caucasus Town
China’s Geely has joined other manufacturers such as Chevrolet, Ford, Hyundai, Renault, Kia, and Toyota, and launched a production line in Russia. Geely opened a plant in Russia’s Caucasus republic of Karachay-Cherkessia, China’s state news agency Xinhua reports.
Russian car company Derways has already started assembling Geely-brand vehicles, and wants to have finished 1,100 units by the end of February. The annual production of Geely will be no lower than 12,000 units. Derways was launched by a local vodka producer in 2004, and is turning into a manufacturing hub for the Chinese.
A year ago, the company started CKD production for Lifan cars. Derways is also scheduled to manufacture for other Chinese brands such as Great Wall Motors, Chery and Haima. The total annual output of the Derways company is estimated to reach 100,000 units.
If you want one of the cars for cheap, move to Cherkessk: Local residents get a discount.

martin_krpan 06-22-2011, 12:20 PM Mesfin Inaugurates Addis Car Assembly Line
The assembly plant for Addis Car was inaugurated by Mesfin Industrial Engineering in collaboration with Geely International Corp, the China based manufacturer of Geely cars, on Saturday, June 18, 2011.
It would be the company's first time to assemble automobiles for the domestic market.
The plant is located on the same premises as Mesfin Industrial's truck assembly plant in Mekelle Town, 780km north of Addis Abeba. The company previously assembled trucks like the Russian made Kamaz.
Following the import of 10 million Br worth of machinery, the plant has five completely knocked down (CKD) assembly lines for Geely cars, enabling it to assemble five automobiles at a time.
The plant has the capacity to annually assemble more than 800 Geely models but is to assemble only, according to the agreement. The cars will be equipped with 1.3cc engines, double airbags, and an anti-breaking system (ABS).
Mesfin Industrial, which has a capital of 260 million Br, obtained the exclusive rights to import, distribute, and service Geely cars in Ethiopia in August 2010, through an agreement with Geely International, which was established in Shanghai in July 2002.
The previous exclusive dealer of Geely cars was Paul Ries & Sons Ethiopia.
Mesfin also has the sole distribution rights in neighbouring countries where Geely does not have a sole agent, such as Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, Djibouti, and Eritrea.
"The substantial technology transfer from Geely International was one of the reasons we decided to assemble the cars,” Yusuf Adamnur, manager of sales and promotion at Mesfin Industrial, told Fortune. “It is one of the leading companies in the production and export market."
Geely International, which has at least eight factories in China, produces nine models of Geely cars and has the capacity to manufacture 42,000 cars annually.
By February 2011, 13 vehicle and tractor assembly plants have been licensed and started operation, according to the Ethiopian Investment Agency (EIA). Out of the total, 10 are foreign owned, according to the agency.
Mesfin Industrial, which was established with a capital of seven million Birr in September 1993, is among the few local companies looking towards car assemblies in a bid to provide cost effective vehicles in Ethiopia.
The company is offering prospective buyers a deal whereby they can purchase the car with a 50pc down payment after which the balance can be paid upon them receiving the car.
"Some brokers and drivers prefer to pay more for second-hand cars of certain brands instead of buying new models of other brands, which would be a challenge for us," Yusuf told Fortune.
This phenomenon was confirmed by Girum Bekele, a car and house broker.
"Many buyers are attracted by lower fuel consumption, lower prices, and strong and durable cars that can easily be resold," he told Fortune.
Mesfin Industrial imported 34 completely built units (CBUs) of Geely cars to test its appeal to middleclass customers at the end of 2010. The cars were sold out at 285,000 Br a piece, which encouraged Mesfin Industrial to install the assembly plant, according to Yusuf.
The company recently started exporting semitrailer fuel tankers with 45,000-litre capacities at a cost of around 48,000 dollars each.
