I saw an Aurora a few months ago with the Huanghai logo on it. I only knew about the bus manufacturing arm of the company, so I was a little puzzled by seeing an SUV with a bus badge on the front.

I checked the company out and it looks like they're going to produce their own version of the Hyundai Santa Fe quite soon. It's called Qisheng.

If it's from Shuguang, I'm pretty sure that this new Qisheng will be worth a close look. This is a big company with lots of experience with drivetrains and other auto-related ventures. I think we can expect a lot from this dynamic company.

Maybe for their light truck line they wanted to avoid a brand name foible like "Gonow". They may have looked at the name "Shoe Guang" (Shuguang) and felt that Huanghai (Yellow Sea) sounded like a better bet for marketing passenger vehicles successfully.

I'm not actually sure if the SUVs are being marketed as Huanghais rather than Shuguangs. On the Aurora I saw, there was no mention of a manufacturer. All I recognized was the badge, which you can see on this tropical-theme bus.

Now that I look at Raul's pictures a little more closely, I see the same badge on all the trucks. So the logo may not just be the Huanghai logo, but the Shuguang Group logo.

Prior to introducing this XiaoChaiShen, or "Little diesel god", Shuguang had used the ubiquitous-in-China, Isuzu-based bodies exclusively. Now like Great Wall, Zhongxing, Pulaide, Tianma, Yunnei, Dong'an Heibao, Nanjing Dongyu, Yituo, and others, Shuguang is choosing to use the stronger Toyota type body. Having long been duplicating Toyota drivetrain components, it appears to have seen an advantage.

March 4, 2008 - Liaoning Shuguang Automotive Corp invested 600 million yuan ($83.80 million) to build SUV and pickup truck plant in Shenyang, the capital city of Liaoning province in northeastern China, state news agency Xinhua reported yesterday.

With a projected annual capacity of 500,000, the SUV and pickup plant will start operation by July of 2009. Last year, Shuguang Automotive sold a total of 11,322 SUV vehicles in Chinese market.

Shuguang Automotive Corp. Ltd. is an international automotive industry group, with 11 manufacturing facilities, 2 overseas offices in USA and South Korea and 4 technical centers in China. In the domestic automotive industry, SG is one of the major OEMS. And in this role, SG is the largest manufacture of light-duty axles and one of the largest manufactures for automotive brake systems, according to the automaker's official web.

Shuguang has 13 state-of-the-art bus assembly lines, 1700 machining units and can produce 5000 buses and chassis for 6000 units. SG has 20 bus series with 161 models total. Vehicles length ranges from 8 to 12 meters. They meet various needs such as public transportation, tour bus, long distance travel and commercial usage. It has a complete product mix heavy to light duty, from upper-end luxury to lower-end economy models. Huanghai Bus covers 96% of the China market, and is exported to many foreign countries.

Huanghai Automotive is a pick up and suv maker, they make the Plutus pick up, the Landscape and Aurora suv's and this new one, the Faster.

The launch ceremony was nice with a short speech from a Huanghao official and these two girls dressed as cops, not as Chinese cops but as Huangtai-country cops.

The Faster on show was a black car against a black backdrop with girls dressed in mostly black outfits, perfect for taking a picture.

Engine is a Mitsubishi sourced 2.4 liter with 108kw/5250rpm and 170nm/3000rpm and it's weight is 1800kg so it will problably be faster than a QQ running on one cilinder.

It is a big car though, size is 4740x1845x1730, wheelbase is 2715. Just like all this kind of suv's or cuv's it will have almost everything standard, from dvd-screens to electric chairs and a sunroof.

These things usually come really cheap, my estimate for the Faster is around 13.000 dollar.

Shuguang Auto building new plant in Dandong

May 28, 2008 - Liaoning Shuguang Automotive Group held a ground-breaking ceremony for a new SUV plant in the city of Dandong, Liaoning province earlier this week.

With a current annual production capacity of 60,000 Faster SUVs, the plant will be part of the automaker's strategy to reach an annual capacity of 120,000 passenger vehicles eventually.

The plant will have a workforce of more than 2,000 after operation. Initial investment will be 810 million yuan ($117 million).

As one of the major OEMS in China, Liaoning Shuguang's main products include pickups, SUVs and light buses. It has 11 manufacturing facilities, 2 overseas offices in the U.S.A. and South Korea and 4 technical centers in China. Last year it sold 25,000 pickups and SUVs.

One wonders how long Shuguang will hang onto this old, and much modified, body design of the Aurora. They did however manage to update the ancient instrument panel still seen in the Dawn Navigator.
Perhaps the new plant will turn out a new design series. It may even include an aligned pedal cluster.....

China's Huanghai pickups to be assembled in Nigeria

BMGAUTO International and China's SG Automotive Group have been selected by the Ondo State Government of Nigeria in West Africa to build a CKD assembly plant of Chinese pickups, said a recent email from BMGAUTO International to Gasgoo.com.

Liaoning SG Automotive Group Co., Ltd. of China will supply the CKD parts for the Aurora and Plutus pickups. "We have already broken earth on this project to be completed by June 2010. The production capacity will be 10,000 units per year," BMGAUTO said in the email message.

Interviewed by Gasgoo.com yesterday, SG Automotive's subsidiary Huanghai Automobile Sales Co., which is in charge of export business of Huanghai-brand pickups and SUVs, confirmed that SG Automotive has reached a preliminary agreement with BMGAUTO for cooperation.

According to Huanghai Automobile's export executive Monica Wan, BMGAUTO is planning to introduce the Chinese auto company's assembly and related quality-control equipment. The two sides have clear intention of partnership and are optimistic about the prospect, she added.

Liaoning SG Automotive Group Co., Ltd., located in northeast China's Liaoning province, is an international automotive industry group and one of the major vehicle exporters in China. Currently its products are exported to Africa, South America and other overseas markets.

Let's hope that Shuguang doesn't suffer the same fate as Zhongxing with its ill-fated CKD assembly operation in Eygpt, by the Automotive Gate company (an AAV partner). It's not easy to run these remote operations that require careful oversight by homebase, and delicate handlng of cross cultural issues.
