http://www.chinatruck.org/english/2006/october/23.jpgAfter signed report of joint venture for building light type diesel engine, Foton, the biggest Chinese light truck corporation signed a contract with the biggest independent engine corporation in the world Cummins on October 19. They work together to build Beijing Foton Cummins Engine Company Limited at the proportion of each half. It makes a new generation of Cummins light engine from 2.8 L to 3.8 L. They desire to build a light engine base in 2008.
The board chairman of Foton An Qingheng and the general manager Wang Jinyu for Chinese side and Cummins vice-president Steve Chapman and the board chairman of Cummins China John Watkins for American side signed the contract. The vice-mayor of Beijing City Lu Hao attended the the signing ceremony and made an important speech. Many other important personalities also attended the ceremony.
It was reported that this contract is biggest engine investment item in China. The most outstanding characteristic of this item is that the two new types of the engine going to be produced in the base never appear in American land. The new engines satisfy requires of Euro III and Euro IV standard and above. And Beijing Foton Cummins will be the only Cummins engine manufacture outside American land. The engines will be used for light trucks, pickups, SUV, MPV and other multi-functional equipments.
As the biggest commercial vehicle manufacture in China, Foton started its light-truck business from 1999 and its sale result ranked top one for 8 years continuously. The strong power must drive Foton forward.
Admin 11-12-2006, 02:47 AM TEHRAN, Nov. 11 (MNA) – Saipa Diesel Co. and Foton of China are close to strike an agreement on production of a light truck in Iran, the Persian service of ISNA reported on Saturday. The six-ton Chinese lorry is now enduring the preliminary tests at Saipa and it would hit the assembly line next Iranian calendar year (to start March 21, 2007) if the test result comes out satisfactory.
The move is expected to offer a new impetus, as Saipa hopes, to both Iran’s stagnant truck market and scraping process of worn-out rigs. At 170 million rials ($18,500), the Foton may checkmark both queries.
As claimed by the manufacturer, Foton is capable of passing Euro II standards and the fuel economy of the 108-HP engine, 13 liters per 100 km, is lucrative enough to push the six-wheeler into the marketplace.
Not long ago, Saipa Diesel was involved in sales of Chinese version of Nissan light trucks with diesel engine. The company says it has no further plans to pick up this venture again.
Iran’s domestic truck manufacturers have been experiencing a slump in recent months and see inexpensive Chinese trucks as the main way out of the ‘crisis’. Nevertheless, the experts are on the say that low quality of Chinese wheels may further weaken the nation’s transportation fleet.
who benefits from this kind of deal more...China or Iran?

Although the inner land light truck market developed little in the first three quarters of this year, the change of Euro and Japanese light truck situation attracted most attention. It was reported that the increasing ratio of light truck fell down in this year but Euro series of which Foton Aumark and Nanjing IVECO represent rose up. But Japanese light truck which had been used since 1980s began to fell down after a 20-year occupation in Chinese Market, because it couldn’t satisfy the need of customers gradually.
According to the authoritative number, the increasing ratio of light truck has fell down to 10% compared with 13% of last year. Experts said that it might be because of the rising price of petrol and materials. Compared with light truck manufacturing market, the light truck consuming got mature. More light truck customers realized that it was not only an instrument but an enjoyment of transportation, and required more in light truck consume. The Japanese light truck almost based on the techniques of 1980s, it was obvious that it could hardly satisfy the need now.
There were three main reasons: 1.The industry design is stagnated, narrow body work, no advancement, the top speed can only reach 90-100 kilometers per hour, these couldn’t catch up with the fast development of Chinese situation. 2. Worse public praise 3. The techniques drop behind. The Japanese side is not willing to bring new techniques to China.
Why does Euro light truck keep such a rising tendency? Experts said that it is product decides the win or lost. Foton Aumark caught up with the steps of the world advanced techniques. As the representative product of Euro light truck, Foton Aumark has three main features that the engine of world top level, double wide bodywork and lower load platform. It realized high quality, high profit, high safety and high comfort.
Beijing- German-US automaker DaimlerChrysler plans to buy a 24-per-cent stake in the Chinese truck maker Beiqi Foton for 104 million dollars, the Chinese firm said Thursday. Beiqi Foton plans to sell 297 million shares to DaimlerChrysler at 2.75 yuan each for a total value of 817 million yuan, according to a company statement filed with the Shanghai stock exchange.
Foton, China's largest maker of small trucks, is also to sell 129 million shares for 355 million yuan (45.2 million dollars) to its state-owned parent company, it said.
DaimlerChrysler, the world's largest truck maker, said it could not confirm that it had agreed to buy the shares, saying any agreement would remain subject to Chinese government approval.
"We have been in discussions with Foton for quite some time to cooperate to offer medium- to heavy-duty trucks in China," a DaimlerChrysler spokesman said.
"Until the approval process is complete, we can't comment further," he added.
If the deal goes ahead, it would make DaimlerChrysler the second-largest shareholder in Foton, the China Securities Journal said.
The largest stakeholder is Beiqi, Foton's state-owned parent, with a 32-per-cent share, which would be reduced to 31 per cent if the DaimlerChrystler deal goes through.
DaimlerChrysler originally wanted to form a joint-venture with Foton, but it has already reached the limit of two commercial-vehicle joint ventures under Chinese regulations, industry sources said.
The US-German company said last month that it sold 16,400 Mercedes vehicles in China from January to September, up 47 per cent from 2005.
Sales of imported Chrysler Group vehicles also increased by 31 per cent in China, it said.
chinoy54 12-14-2006, 09:45 PM both should benefit, i should think. iran gets a source for inexpensive brand-new trucks to replace what i would think are fairly rundown trucks or else used trucks from japan, etc. & china gets to test their trucks in conditions w/ch do not exist anymore in parts of greater china, pot-holed gravel tracks, extreme operating conditions, overloading, poor maintenance conditions, etc. i believe FOTON is up to the task, & i would like to get more information as to how they will perform in the future.

Source: Automotive WorldBeiqi Foton Motor, a China-based commercial vehicles manufacturer, says it has signed an agreement with DaimlerChrysler for technological and sales cooperation. As previously reported in November, it has now confirmed that it will issue 297 million new Class A shares to the US-German OEM, according to MarketWatch.
DaimlerChrysler has agreed to offer technological support to Beiqi Foton with R&D activities for the development of light and heavy trucks, as well as helping the Chinese company export its products through DaimlerChrysler's sales network, according to the Chinese OEM. The company is also aiming to become the main sales agent in China for Mercedes-Benz trucks.
Shareholders of Beiqi Foton have approved the private placement of 297 million new Class A shares, representing 24% of share capital, to DaimlerChrysler, and 129 million shares to its own parent, Beijing Automotive Industry Holdings, at Yuan 2.75 (US$0.35) per share.
Beiqi Foton stated that the deal is subject to approval by China's Ministry of Commerce.
phaeton 01-18-2007, 03:32 AM WOW lots of foreign investment in China going on now :D
Will this give a hard time to all the chinese truck manufacturers in china?
BEIJING — DaimlerChrysler is expanding its relationship with Beijing Auto as a springboard into the medium- and heavy-truck market in China.
The German automaker said it has received approval from the central government here to take a 24 percent stake in BAIC subsidiary Beiqi Foton Motor, which makes trucks and SUVs primarily for the Chinese market. DaimlerChrysler reportedly will supply Foton with modern commercial vehicles to sell in China, including trucks and vans.
The deal is worth an estimated $100 million.
BAIC's relations with DaimlerChrysler stretch back to the early 1980s, when American Motors formed a partnership with Beijing Jeep to build the Cherokee — the first such deal for a U.S. automaker. AMC was absorbed in 1986 into Chrysler, which in turn was acquired by Daimler.
Currently, BAIC also assembles versions of the Mercedes-Benz C- and E-Class sedans. Mercedes vans are assembled by two other Chinese makers, Yaxing Benz and Fujian Auto.

Trucks here are all domestic brands: mostly FAW, Foton/Auman, Dong Feng or Sinotruck.
In almost 4 years here I can't recall seeing a foreign brand of big truck of any sort on the roads. Although I'm sure there must be a few somewhere...
chinoy54 01-23-2007, 06:49 PM hi, trivia tim. i think there's a mercedes-benz truck factory in your neighborhood called north benz or north star w/ch produces trucks for the oil industry. i wonder if it's still in operation. w/regards to heavy trucks in china, i suppose that it's to be expected that since only big companies buy big trucks, & in china big means state-owned, that the state-owned companies will buy chinese. i think that dc is just making a low-cost entry into the chinese market w/this deal, banking on the foton name to try & penetrate the chinese market w/out too big an investment in manpower.
chinacartimes 01-24-2007, 06:43 AM I was at Beiqi Foton earlier today - they are doing some amazing stuff and their pick up trucks are starting to break away from that 'every chinese pick up looks the same' mould.
I bet they will lead the field in lorries-HGV in a few years, and probably the same with pick up trucks. Great Wall will give them a run for their money though ;)

You're right, there is a North Benz factory in Inner Mongolia. They make trucks under license and sell them under their own name. The badge is a little similar to the Benz logo.

Admin 07-20-2007, 04:56 PM China's biggest light truck maker, Beiqi Foton Motor Co., made its local debut at the 15th Indonesian International Motor Show (IIMS) with the launch of the Foton light truck Thursday.
With a 2,771 cc diesel engine, four turbocharger cylinders producing maximum power of 92.5PS and compliance with the Euro 2 emission standard, the Chinese vehicle is ready to test the waters in Indonesia's already tight light-truck market.
The truck, weighing 5,100 kilograms, can carry large-sized items weighing up to 3,230 kilograms, and is the cheapest truck in its class, according to Foton's local distributor, PT Indobuana Autoraya.
Foton is a newcomer at the IIMS autoshow, which runs through July 28. The annual automotive event is used by major vehicle manufacturers to unveil their latest models.
"We are selling them for only Rp 85 million (US$9,346) off the road," said Indobuana CEO Paulus B. Suranto.
To assure potential buyers that the truck's strength lies not only in its price, Indobuana, a subsidiary of the Indomobil Group, is providing a two-year, or 50,000-kilometer, after-sales service warranty.
"We are also guaranteeing the delivery of spare parts in 48 hours. If we can't meet the deadline, the customer will get a free service," Paulus said. While Chinese products are cheap, they also suffer from a poor-quality image.
"Low prices are not our only consideration. We are also concerned with quality as we have to maintain Indomobil's reputation," he explained.
Foton hopes to sell 800 of its light trucks by the end of the year based on its current single variant, and 3,000 in 2008 based on the addition of other variants.
Java will be the company's first focus, and is expected to contribute up to 60 percent of total sales.
"We expect to take a 10 percent share of the light truck market," said Paulus.
He said that this market was currently very promising, and accounted for more than 10 percent of overall automotive sales, which amounted to 318,000 units last year.
Quoting police vehicle registration figures, Paulus said that automakers sold around 52,000 light trucks in 2005. In 2006, however, the figure decreased by 30 percent due to the fuel price hikes in that year.
"This year, as the economic situation improves and the need for this type of commercial vehicle increases, I believe that light truck sales will match the figure for 2005, and perhaps even exceed it," he said, adding that April sales increased by 48 percent over March. The Beijing-based Foton sold a total of 350,000 vehicles last year and expects the number to reach 400,000 by the end of this year. The company is well-known in China for its trucks and buses, although it also produces a number of sport-utility vehicles
martin_krpan 01-30-2008, 01:03 PM Beiqi Foton 2007 net profit soars 600 pct.
January 30, 2008 - Chinese truck maker Beiqi Foton Motor Co announced last weekend an estimate net profit surge of more than 600 percent last year.
Foton's net profit in 2007 might reach 333 million yuan ($46.3 million) in total, the announcement said. The company’s 2006 net profit was 47.6 million yuan ($6.61 million).
In October, Foton had predicted the year's profit would rise more than 100 percent, but it said recently that management reforms, an improved product portfolio and new sales channels contributed to the company's stronger-than-projected performance.
Daimler AG and Beiqi Foton are exploring possibility to build a joint venture truck maker after a 24 percent stake-purchase deal met regulatory obstacles a month earlier.

mememe 02-02-2008, 05:45 AM Beiqi Foton profit up sevenfold
Beiqi Foton Motor Co, China's biggest maker of commercial vehicles, boosted 2007 profit sevenfold as the nation's construction boom boosted sales of trucks and pick-ups.
Net income rose to 388 million yuan ($54 million), or 0.48 yuan per share, from 47.6 million yuan, or 0.06 yuan per share, a year earlier, the Beijing-based automaker said in a Shanghai stock exchange statement yesterday. Sales jumped 41 percent to 27.9 billion yuan.
Foton, the maker of Aumark and Ollin trucks, plans to raise as much as 1.23 billion yuan in a private share placement and to form a venture with Daimler AG to tap the country's surging demand for trucks. China's commercial vehicle sales rose 22 percent to 2.49 million last year, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.
"The company's profit growth may slow this year as last year's jump came from a low base," said Zhang Xin, an analyst at Guotai Junan Securities Co in Beijing. Profit this year may rise 15 percent, or more than 0.50 yuan a share, he added.
Foton fell 1 percent to 12.03 yuan in Shanghai trading on Friday, before the earnings announcement. The stock has more than doubled in the past year.
The truck maker said in December that it would sell shares to domestic investors after scrapping a plan to sell a 34 percent stake to Daimler. Foton now plans to sign a venture agreement with the German company this year.

By George Gao From:Gasgoo.comApril 03, 2008
Shanghai, April 3 (Gasgoo.com) Beiqi Foton Motor Co. Ltd. said its net profit in the first quarter of 2008 is expected to have grown by more than 150% over the same period of last year.
A filing with the Shanghai Stock Exchange said the company's profit growth was mainly driven by higher sales of high-end vehicles, subsidies from the government, and the selling of some of its shares in Anhui Quanchai Engine Co.
Another statement said Beiqi Foton plans to spend RMB125.48 million ($17.9 million) to buy a 12.45% stake in Beijing Foton Cummins Engine Co, a joint venture with Cummins Inc. The seller is an affiliate company. Beiqi Foton will raise its stake in the venture to 37.45% from the current 25%, while the affiliate will continue to hold a 12.55% stake.

martin_krpan 04-17-2008, 12:02 PM Foton becomes world's largest commercial car maker in Q1.
April 16, 2008 - Chinese car maker Beiqi Foton Motor said on Thursday that it sold 125,000 vehicles in the first quarter this year, up 28.6% over the same period of 2007 and 10% higher than the industry average, beating Benz to be the world's largest maker of commercial cars for the first time in terms of sales.
Foton's robust growth was strongly evidenced by its sales in March of a total of 65,000 units, a staggering number that accounts for half of China's total sales of commercial vehicles. Sales of high-end models such as Ollin represent one third of its total earnings. In addition, exports of the car maker increased 118.7% in the first quarter to nearly 10,000 units.
Meanwhile, the company unveiled a new commercial car model named Midi, which will be available for sales next month with an estimated price of no more than 10,000 yuan ($1,428). The Chinese market has similar models such as FAW VW's Caddy and Chery's Karry, but the Foton Midi highlights a mix of family use and commercial purposes. The design of the Midi model was based on the spacious van platform to create a heavy-duty and roomy model for family and commercial use.
Beijing-based Foton is one of China's home-grown auto makers which focus on self-developed models with independent intellectual property. Though it has become the global Number One in the commercial vehicle segment, Beiqi Foton has an uphill struggle in the sedan project.

martin_krpan 06-16-2008, 10:39 AM Beiqi Foton to finalise Daimler JV after Olympics.
June 16, 2008 - Beiqi Foton, a major Chinese truck maker, will finalise a planned heavy-duty truck joint venture with Daimler AG after the Beijing Olympics in August, the chairman of Beiqi Foton's parent company said last Thursday.
Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co Ltd Chairman Xu Heyi told Reuters the 50-50 venture would make 100,000 heavy-duty trucks per year, to be sold domestically and overseas.
He declined to give financial details of the venture.
Xu reiterated that Beijing Auto, which runs a car manufacturing venture with Hyundai Motor, aims for a domestic initial public offering (IPO) before the end of 2009 to raise more than 2 billion yuan ($290 million).
He added the proceeds would be invested mainly in the development of own-brand vehicles.
After focusing on making foreign-branded cars via tie-ups with overseas partners, many domestic automakers are starting to establish their own brands with models developed in-house, hoping to wean themselves from reliance on foreign technology.
In April, Beijing Auto unveiled its first own-brand sedan, named after the Chinese capital city, with mass production scheduled to start in 2010.
More Beijing-branded cars will be rolled out in the next few years, targeting the economy and the mid- to high-end market segments, he said.
FAW Group Corp, a China partner of Volkswagen AG and Toyota Motor Corp, plans to spend 13 billion yuan in the next eight years to develop cars under its own brand.
SAIC Motor Corp, which runs ventures with General Motors Corp and Volkswagen, announced a massive bond issue plan last year to fund the development of own-brand cars -- including building plants to produce up to 270,000 sedans and 320,000 engines per year -- at an estimated cost of 21.4 billion yuan.
Xu added that Beijing Auto was also working on clean-energy cars, but they might not be commercially viable in China in the near term. "The problem with clean-energy cars is whether and when you can start mass production," he said.

mememe 07-16-2008, 06:53 PM Foton gets $151m from share placement
2008-07-16
Major Chinese truck maker Beiqi Foton Motor Co said on Wednesday it has raised 1.03 billion yuan ($151 million) from a share placement.
Foton issued 105 million shares to its parent, Beijing Automotive Industry Holding, and four other domestic firms at 9.88 yuan per share, it said in a statement.
The move increased Beijing Auto's stake in Foton to 37.71 percent from 36.43 percent and brought in major Chinese engine maker Weichai Power Co as a strategic investor with a 2.18 percent stake.
Proceeds will be used to fund Foton's engine venture with Cummins Inc and upgrade its commercial vehicle production facilities, it added.
Foton's A shares traded on the Shanghai Stock exchange rose 1.66 percent to 7.33 yuan by mid-morning trade on Wednesday, outperforming a 1.24 drop in the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index.
In April, Foton reached a preliminary agreement to set up a truck-making joint venture with Daimler AG. The two parties will finalise the deal after the Beijing Olympics in August, Beijing Auto Chairman Xu Heyi told Reuters last month.

Shanghai, July 16 (Gasgoo.com) Based on its steady growth since the beginning of 2008, major Chinese truck-maker Beiqi Foton Motor Co sold 32,470 vehicles in June, and its sales in the first half of this year rose by 18.8% year on year to 250,436 units, an achievement that has boosted the company's competitive edge and profit-making capability, reported Beijing Times today.
According to its output and sales data released by the company yesterday, Beiqi Foton sold 32,470 vehicles in June, including 4,551 mid- to heavy-duty trucks, 26,355 light trucks (and mini trucks), 882 light buses, 294 medium- to large-size buses and 388 other vehicles (such as SUVs, MP-Xs).
The truck-maker's sales from January to June totaled 250,436 vehicles, up 18.8% year on year (y/y), which included 38,366 mid- to heavy-duty trucks (up 18.8% y/y), 200,589 light trucks and mini trucks (up 18.0% y/y), 7,943 light buses (up 14.8% y/y), 1,278 medium- to large-size buses (up 35.5% y/y) and 2,260 other vehicles such as SUVs, MP-Xs (up 246.1% y/y).
The sales of light trucks as the Foton's priority products grew steadily, but the sales of its mid- to heavy-duty trucks and light buses grew slower than the segment average of the auto industry. From their small sales before, the company’s medium- to large-size buses, SUVs and MP-Xs achieved huge growth in the first six months this year.

mememe 07-17-2008, 12:43 PM Foton Cummins venture gets 1.2 bln yuan loans
Shanghai, July 17 (Gasgoo.com) Beijing Foton Cummins Engine Co., Ltd., a joint venture between Beiqi Foton Motor Co. and Cummins Inc., will borrow 1.2 billion yuan ($176 million) to help finance the formation of China's largest maker of Cummins light diesel engines for trucks, said auto.sina.com.cn yesterday.
China Minsheng Banking Corp. and China Construction Bank Corp. will provide the funds, according to a statement distributed to reporters at the loan agreement signing ceremony in a Beijing hotel on Wednesday. This initiative marks a milestone in the fund-raising means of China's largest diesel manufacturer and will lay a sound financial foundation for the joint venture's future development.
Beijing Foton Cummins Engine Co., Ltd. is a 50-50 joint venture of Foton and Cummins. The diesel-engine-making project, with its total investment exceeding 2.7 billion yuan, will have an annual capacity of 400,000 units. The factory will produce mainly Cummins' light-duty, high-performance 2.8-L and 3.8-L clean diesel engines, which will meet stringent emission standards worldwide, including Euro IV and China III.
These engines, to be mass-produced in 2009, will be used primarily in light-duty commercial trucks, pickup trucks, multipurpose and sport utility vehicles. Certain types of marine, small construction equipment and industrial applications also will be served by this engine family. The two Chinese banks have much confidence in the growth of Foton Cummins.

martin_krpan 07-28-2008, 11:40 AM Daimler, Foton to sign truck venture deal in 2 weeks.
July 28, 2008 - Daimler AG, the world's biggest truckmaker, and Beiqi Foton Motor Co. will sign a preliminary agreement to form a commercial-vehicle venture in China within two weeks as the country's trade growth spurs truck demand.
The venture, based in Beijing, will make Mercedes-Benz trucks, Foton vehicles and Mercedes-Benz engines, said a Foton official, who declined to be identified. The deal will be signed before the Olympics start on Aug. 8, the official said.
Daimler and Foton, China's biggest commercial-vehicle maker, have spent four years seeking a partnership, with earlier plans for an equity tie-up derailed by Daimler's sale of Chrysler LLC. The German automaker, like General Motors Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp., wants to boost sales in China to offset slumping demand in the U.S. and Europe.
"It's great news for both companies," said Yale Zhang, director of CSM Asia in Shanghai. "Daimler can finally make Benz trucks in China and Beiqi Foton will benefit from learning advanced technologies."
China's economy surged more than 10 percent in each of the first two quarters, spurring demand for vehicles to haul goods and construction materials. Truck sales rose 19.3 percent in the first half, outpacing the 18.5 percent increase in overall vehicle sales.
Daimler Expansion
Daimler's expansion in China contrasts with its operations in North America, where it's scaling back production following a 37 percent decline in truck sales last year. The Stuttgart-based company will fire almost half the workforce at a plant in Ontario, it said on July 17.
"We are eager to move forward as soon as possible," said Trevor Hale, a Beijing-based spokesman for Daimler. He declined to comment on the timing. Zheng Gang, Foton's director of public relations, declined to comment.
Beiqi Foton boosted profit sevenfold last year to 388 million yuan ($57 million) after selling more Auman and Ollin trucks. The Beijing-based company aims to more than double annual vehicle sales to as many as 1 million by 2010 from about 400,000 last year.
The truckmaker gained 0.3 percent to 7.44 yuan in Shanghai trading. The company has dropped 43 percent so far this year.
Foton scrapped plans to sell a 24 percent stake to Daimler in December after its stock almost tripled during a yearlong approval process. The company instead raised 1.04 billion yuan selling shares to domestic investors earlier this month.
Daimler also has a venture with Foton's parent, Beijing Automotive Industry Holdings Corp., which makes Mercedes-Benz sedans in the Chinese capital.

martin_krpan 08-08-2008, 02:23 PM Daimler, Beiqi Foton announce truck JV deal.
August 8,2008 - Daimler AG, the world's leading truck manufacturer, and Beiqi Foton, a major Chinese commercial vehicle company, signed a letter of intent on a ceremony Thursday to form a 50-50 trucks joint venture, according to a company statement, cited by Reuters.
The deal, if materialized, will help the JV sell medium- and heavy-duty trucks in China and in overseas markets under Foton's Auman brand, the Reuters report said. Daimler will invest in terms of cash while the Chinese partner will inject its heavy truck assets into the venture.
The JV is awaiting the government approval which it expects to secure in the next 12 months and, about two years after the establishment of the China JV, the two companies will possibly build another in Russia, with more to follow in developing markets such as South Asia and South America in the next three to five years.
About the deal, Ulrich Walker, chairman of Daimler Northeast Asia said, "Today's agreement is a milestone in the commercial vehicle industry. Daimler's technology expertise, global scale and leadership in the high-end truck segment complement Foton's broad distribution in China and leadership in the lower-end truck segment."
Daimler also said it will reconsider buying stakes in Foton if the Chinese government adjusts its auto industry policies in future. Daimler failed in its attempt to take a 24% stake in Foton last year when this effort did not win authorities' approval.

August 26, 2008
Shanghai, August 26 (Gasgoo.com) In the first half of this year, Chinese truck maker Beiqi Foton Motor Co achieved sales revenue of 18.45 billion yuan ($2.7 billion), a rise of 29.46% year on year (y/y), and its net profit reached 342 million yuan, up 61.73 y/y, or 0.42 yuan per share, xinhuanet.com said today, citing the interim report released by the company.
Foton Motor said that plus the profit of 323 million yuan not divided at the beginning of the year, the total net profit as dividends reach 665 million yuan. The company is planning to add 1.8 yuan in cash to each 10 of the total 916,408,500 shares. Foton's revised net profit for the first half of last year was 211.23 million yuan, or 0.26 yuan per share.
Reuters said on July 24 that Beiqi Foton Motor expected a rise of 50% or more in net profit in the first half of the year, boosted by sales of high-end products and government subsidies. The estimate for the first half was based on unaudited figures. Listed Chinese companies are required to issue preliminary estimates if they expect earnings to rise or fall more than 50%.
Foton Motor and Daimler AG signed a letter of intent on August 7 to form a 50-50 truck-making joint venture. The chairman of the Chinese firm's parent company has said the two parties would finalize after the Beijing Olympics this month. Foton has also agreed to raise stake in a diesel engine JV with Cummins.

September 02, 2008
Shanghai, September 2 (Gasgoo.com) In the run-up to its 12th anniversary celebration, Beiqi Foton Motor has completed the second phase of its new-energy bus project and announced the facility was officially put into operation on August 28, reported Beijing Business Today.
Foton is scheduled to produce 5,000 large and medium buses by 2010, gaining sales revenue of 2 billion yuan with 80 million yuan profit. The company aims to take 4.5% market share and targets the list of top 6 carmakers in China, Foton executives told reporters. As for products, Foton will shift to full-loaded lineup from semi-integral vehicles, poised to build high-end brand models from middle-end brand vehicles.
As the first enterprise which gets hybrid products mass-produced in the domestic market, Foton has delivered 30 Foton Eu-V hybrid buses into operation in Guangzhou earlier this year. The success in the Guangzhou market soon increased demand for the Eu-V hybrid bus.
Foton plans to sell over 500 hybrid buses and develop an annual capacity of 1,500 hybrid buses by 2012, said Liu Guoqiang, vice general manager of Foton Eu-V bus. The launch of the second phase Eu-V bus project has opened a new chapter in Foton’s new energy-vehicle mass-production.

mememe 10-09-2008, 06:39 PM Foton to build truck plant in Sichuan for bigger market
October 09, 2008
Shanghai, October 9 (Gasgoo.com) Chinese truck maker Beiqi Foton Motor Co signed a strategic agreement on October 8 to build a new factory with the government of Deyang city in the southwestern province of Sichuan, reported China Business News today.
Beiqi Foton said the factory, with an investment of 800 million yuan ($117 million) will make light trucks as well as trucks used in civil engineering, and will have an annual capacity of 100,000 vehicles. Construction of the plant will kick off at the beginning of 2009.
After it is built up, the Deyang factory will become Beiqi Foton's only one manufacturing facility in southwestern China and will expand the truck maker's growth in the light truck market of the vast region. In addition, this facility will also considerably reduce the costs of human resources, materials, premises and logistics for the company.
Beiqi Foton now has an annual output of 400,000 light trucks, which are manufactured in Chucheng (Shandong province of eastern China), Beijing (northern China), Changsha (Hunan province of central China) and Nanhai (Guangdong province of southern China). The current light-truck makers in southwestern China are Yunnan Hongta and Chongqing Lifan, both of whom can not compare with Beiqi Foton in terms of capacity and market share.
In 2007, Beiqi Foton's light truck sales rose 11% to 319,000 units, representing 28.9% of China's light truck market, and in the first half of 2008, the company's light truck sales grew by 18% y/y to 200,589 units.
The Deyang city government said that the cooperation with the light truck maker Beiqi Foton is expected to generate annual revenues of 4.5 billion yuan for local companies of auto parts and relevant products.

mememe 12-03-2008, 03:21 AM Foton Motor to upgrade, expand truck-making
December 03, 2008
Shanghai, December 3 (Gasgoo.com) Beiqi Foton Motor Co. Ltd, the largest commercial vehicle producer in China, has announced that it will invest 2.18 billion yuan ($319 million) in updating its truck technologies, expanding truck-making capacity and developing new pickup and SUV products, said sina.com today.
Of this massive investment, 1.188 billion yuan will be used to set up a medium- and heavy-duty truck manufacturing base in Nanhai city, Guangdong province, to expand Foton's truck production capacity, 682 million yuan will be spent on the project (H4) of updating the medium- and heavy-duty truck products, and 311 million yuan will go to the development of all-new pickup and medium-size (P/U201) SUV products.
In the coming few months, Foton Motor's parent -- Beijing Automobile Industries Holding Co (Beijing Auto, Beiqi) -- will invest 10 billion yuan in three key projects, which include Foton-Cummins Engine venture, and Foton-Daimler heavy-duty truck venture. However, the recent announcement of Foton has not mentioned this JV project.
On August 7, Beiqi Fotn Motor and Daimler AG signed a letter of intent to form a 50-50 trucks joint venture. The deal will help the JV make medium- and heavy-duty trucks for China and overseas markets under Foton's Auman brand. The venture, which is awaiting the government approval and likely to kick off by mid-2009, may expand into making buses.
Last month Beiqi Foton Motor said its board has approved the issue of up to one billion yuan worth of five-year fixed-rate bonds. About 400 mln yuan of the proceeds will be used to pay down bank loans, while the remainder will supplement working capital.

mememe 12-05-2008, 11:37 AM Beiqi Foton to set up subsidiary in Russia
2008-12-05
Chinese truck maker Beiqi Foton is to set up a wholly-owned subsidiary in Russia as part of its overseas expansion efforts, the company said on Thursday.
The subsidiary, with $2 million registered capital, will focus on purchase and sales of automobiles, engineering machinery, internal combustion engines and auto parts, China Business News reported, citing a company insider.
It is the first international cooperation between the Beijing-based truck maker and German automaker Daimler AG, after the two signed an agreement in August to jointly explore the global commercial vehicle market.
"It would be easier for a Chinese brand to go overseas through cooperation with a world renowned auto maker," said the insider. "Chinese enterprises are not approved to set up plants in Russia, but the situation would be better if we join hands with big names like Daimler."
Russia's fast-growing market is strategic for Chinese auto makers to beef up their presence in Central and Eastern Europe, though the process is somehow frustrating due to trade barriers.
Foton expects to make substantial profits in Russia from 2011, when sales in the country are expected to rise sharply.

SHANGHAI -- Beiqi Foton Motor Co., China's biggest maker of commercial vehicles, rose to the highest in three weeks in Shanghai trading after winning an order for 450 hybrid buses from the Beijing government. The company rose 9.7 percent to 4.97 yuan, the highest since Dec. 10. The stock has declined 62 percent this year.
Beijing Public Transport Holding Co. will take delivery of the buses by the end of next year, Beiqi Foton said in a statement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange today. China, the world's second-biggest oil user, is encouraging automakers to develop hybrid vehicles and fuel cells to help cut emissions and to reduce the country's dependence on oil.
Government-owned Beijing Public Transport will pay 30 percent of the purchase price for the buses within 10 days, Foton said.

cuisine 01-08-2012, 04:01 AM Beiqi Foton Motor Co., Ltd. except the Foton brand produces trucks under several other less known brands - Forland and Rowor. These trucks are sold only on domestic market. Recently, under the Rowor brand the company has presented very interesting and original model for China - the medium duty semi-bonneted truck EL2000. Popeye truck looks similar to Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, but does not have anything to do with it. Rather, it is built on a standard cabover chassis 3 系中卡 (3rd series), which is a copy of Foton Auman. Overall dimensions of EL2000 are 8750x2380x2800 mm. The engine is surprisingly weak for such vehicle - YC4D130-33 with a power of only 96 kW (130 hp) and maximum torque of 380 Nm. Payload is 9650 kg. Top speed according to official documents is more than 110 kph (is it real with such weak engine???). Fuel consumption is 10.8 l/100 km, which seems like a fairy tale.
