Brilliance China Automotive Holdings, the Chinese partner of BMW, has inked an agreement with Pyeonghwa Motors of South Korea to assemble its Jinbei Haice mini-buses in North Korea.

Pyeonghwa has set a sales target of 12,000 units over five years for the CKD vehicles.
It also wants to bring the Haice and Brilliance’s Zhonghua sedans into South Korea. This gives Zhonghua another boost, following it’s a deal last November with HSO Motors Europe, a German car importer, to ship 158,000 unit to Europe over the next five years.

In a joint statement, the companies said that if the Haice project is successful, they are “very likely to consider further cooperation on the production of Brilliance China's other brands of vehicles in North Korea.”

Pyeonghwa has a joint venture assembly plant in North Korea, which is 30% owned by the North Korean government.

It also signed a contract in November last year with HSO Motors Europe, a German auto importer, to ship 158,000 units of its Zhonghua branded cars to Europe over the next five years.

Brilliance China's 2006 unit sales surged more than 70% to 210,000 vehicles, including 8,655 exports.

That's interesting.... I've never seen any cars from Pyeonghwa..... I thought it's north korean company.....and they normaly export their cars to the third world market such as Africa... Not to south korea...

Pyonghwa is a very successful North Korean car producer (production 2005: 7 cars, according South Korean sources), assembling Fiat Siena (I guess 50-200), Fiat Doblo (probably one), Shuguan crewcab pickup (never seen in DPRK), Shuguan 4 x 2 (probably 50-200), 4 x 4 (not yet seen) , Ssanyong Chairman (probably one) and now the Brilliance Jinbei Hi Ace.

I'm guessing this is the same Erik who put out a book on North Korean-made cars. I plan to write an article about cars in NK (imports and locally made) for Bloomberg News, my employer. The North Korean Siena is more modern-looking than the Nanjing-made version.
No wonder Fiat has failed in China!

I read that Brilliance China Automotive has reached an agreement to produce light buses in North Korea. Its pretty crazy if they do considering they have partners in South korea!..

I heard this news too. Good luck with them. I hope deals like this help North Korea slowly open their market for global business.

Pyeonghwa sells its cars in North Korea, but not in South Korea. Pyeonghwa-branded Dandong Shuguan pickups and SUVs are also sold in Vietnam by Mekong Auto (which, like Pyeonghwa, has ties to the Unification Church), but since Vietnam imposes heavy tariffs on car imports they're probably shipped directly from China in kit form and assembled by Mekong.

Mekong also produces the Fiat Siena and Dobló, so Pyeonghwa's versions of those cars are probably assembled from kits supplied by Mekong.

Pyeonghwa Motors added Huanghai Plutus to its lineup.

I've just seen on Flickr a photo of an advertisement (in Pyongyang) for a new Pyeonghwa model. On the assumption that it's another CKD import from China, I wonder if someone here will recognise it.

I'm not allowed to post links yet, but you can find it by going to Flickr and searching for the member called Kernbeisser.

It is the Pyonghwa Premio CUV which is in fact the Huanghai (Shuguan) Landscape (Qisheng CUV) DD6480. I haven't seen it yet in the North Korean streets, it is only on the billboards.
