The new DR is set to become the first Chinese-inspired motor to go on sale in the UK
But DR is an international project. It looks astonishingly similar to the original Toyota RAV4, and just like that model, it comes in three and five-door layouts. However, the DR is designed and built in Italy. The firm, based between Naples and Rome, buys the chassis and running gear from Chinese motor maker Gonow, then builds its own bodies and interiors. The car gets its power from Fiat's 1.9-litre Multijet diesel.

"We will start production halfway through next year and we're hoping to sell around 12,000 cars a year in Europe," said a DR spokesman

"We will start production halfway through next year and we're hoping to sell around 12,000 cars a year in Europe," said a DR spokesman. "As Britain is an important market, we expect to be exporting there by 2008."

He also confirmed the company was hoping to undercut the prices of rivals. The three-door, two-wheel-drive model will cost £11,100. Prices for the five-door start at £12,800.

The top-spec SUV will be around £19,000, and it comes with satellite navigation, DVD screens in the rear and electric windows all round.

Hmm, what a interesting business idea...

Bricklin should take a page out of this company - take a Chinese car chasis and drivetrain (albeit the latest and greatest ones) and slap on his own ext/int design and do final assembly.

No thanks, i dont see people paying that kind of $$ for what is really an embarrasment:D , they are better off going to enfield auction and getting a used lexus, m class, x5 or pajero for that kind of money:D

Has anyone heard about Italian company DR? In 2006 they presented two SUVs - DR3 and DR5.

Let me copy the text from Carsscoop:
From the initial facts that we’ve got in our hands, the 3door DR3 and its 5door equivalent, the DR5 that made their world premier at the Bologna Motor Show in Italy are the works of Massimo Di Risio, an ex-pilot who now is a car distributor in Insernia.

There’s no doubt about it that their interior and exterior design (ok, the front part looks like a Suzuki Grand Vitara) are inspired –to say the least, by the previous generation Toyota RAV4. As if that wasn’t enough listen to this: the car’s body which is made in China is shipped over to Italy where it’s assembled on a platform using Fiat’s 120 Hp 1.9 Turbodiesel engine! The press release tells us that the DR3 has a length of 3.850 mm with a wheelbase of 2.280 while the larger 5door DR5 rides on a 2.510mm wheelbase and is 4.285 mm long. 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) comes in 12,4 sec while top speed is 174km/h –DR say’s both versions have the same performance figures (…) According to the info we managed to translate from DR, the 3door and 5door versions of the Chinese/Italian SUV will go on sale in March with prices starting from about 16.000 euros! We’ll try to learn more about the DR3 and DR5 SUV’s and post them up as soon as possible.

According to my information, Cherry is supplying them with 5 door bodies. is that true? Because DR5 is similar to Chery Tiggo. And what about 3 door version? Tiggo does not exist with 3 doors.
So are they buying it from UFO? UFO is selling a Rav4-alike SUV with 3 doors but I don't know the name of the car.

No, Chery is not supplying them with bodies. According DR it was Gonow that was going to build the Toyota RAV 4 copied platform and body panels.

martin_krpan
02-20-2007, 11:34 AM
Are you sure? I checked Gonow's site and they are not offering any model that looks like RAV4. I can't believe they are producing that body specially for Italians.

erik (laofan), cmvdc

Yes, you are right, Gonow is not offering these products yet. But DRsays they are going to build them in the near future.

martin_krpan
02-21-2007, 01:20 PM
So if Gonow is not yet producing RAV4-like bodies they can't provide DR company with them, right? How were then Itailans able to show concept cars at Bologna Auto Show?
Also there's a big resemblance between Chery Tiggo and DR 5 on one side and UFO's car and DR 3 on the other side (exterior and interior). Because Chery is a big player I still think it's somehow involved in this project.

If indeed Gonow will build cars for DR Company they either bought license from Chery and UFO or copied (stole) design elements.

Martin:
I think Toyota and Daihatsu clones can be had for the asking in China. Take this short-lived Beijing Auto (BAIC) knock off of the RAV4, called the Heroic.

And here's that Feide "UFO" RAV4 knockoff you mentioned.

I agree DR used other panels, could me Chery Tiggo and Feidie, but also could be old Toyota RAV 4 panels. Gonow will just build the copied (not paid) Tiggo/Feidie panels, this is China, man!

For what it's worth, we paid a visit to Gonow recently.

Jason Zhang, who's a regular contributor to this forum was a very nice and helpful host - thanks for that.

We found no trace of anything, related to this DR SUV and Mr Zhang highlighted that DR is working with other companies and he never heard that GOnow would supply DR with bodies.

On the other hand, Feidei is very close to Gonow, so it is possible that DR will source the bodies from Feidei. At the airport there was a huge poster of the UFO :)

Pal

Thanks for information.

So Feidei UFO is definitely providing Italians with three-door body. As they don't offer five door version we still have to find out who is shipping that to DR company. I still suspect Chery...

I don't understand this, Pal as I read in the Italian press: "Tutta l'operazione e la creazione del marchio Katay è gestita dal DR Motor Company di Macchia d'Isernia." Katay is the Italian sales name for Gonow, see for instance: http://www.autoblog.it/post/6258/katay-victory-e-troy

This is the Katay (Gonow) sold in Italy by DR!
So either Mr. Jason doesn't know what he is talking about or he deliberately is not telling the truth, for what reason I don't know.

I agree the DR models are base on the old Toyota RAV models and that the swb is copied by Jonway (Feidie UFO) and the lwb by Chery (Tiggo); but it is still Gonow that is involved in DR activities. And it is DR that announces that Gonow is going to build the platforms and bodies for them.

martin_krpan
05-16-2007, 01:19 PM
I didn't know that Katay is also part of DR group. In that case it's indeed very probable that Gonow will be making bodies for DR3 and DR5.

I'm really curious about sales results of DR company.

Chinese carmaker starts production in Europe
Posted on Monday 26 November 2007

In a big step forward for Chinese automakers, Chery Automobile has had its first European-assembled car roll off the production line at a brand new €11.8 million factory in Italy. The Chery Tiggo 3, a mid-sized SUV, is being assembled from kits imported by DR Motor from Chery to be sold in the Italian market as a rebadged DR5.

CEO of DR Motor, Luca Falasca, says there are plans to launch the DR5 in Germany, France and Spain by next summer, reports Automotive News. They also intend to boost production from 12,000 to 40,000 units by 2009.

The DR5 is being sold in Italy with both diesel and petrol options. The 1.6L petrol version costs €16,900 and comes packed with 109hp (81kW), while the 1.9L diesel with its 120hp (89kW) output is priced at €21,900.

I thought the DR3 and DR5 were actually some rebadged Gonow. Di Risio was supposed to have them built by Bertone. And it was still a project!

I'm completly lost!

Joest not to worry. We have all been in the dark about what DR is doing with these three Chinese carmakers: Gonow, Chery, and Zhejiang Jonway.

The major industry media never picked up on this hot story about a Chery-DR relationship. Outside of Italy there was a virtual blackout on the the first negotiations that DR had with these Chinese makers.

People were left thinking that Gonow was involved in the production of the
DR5 and DR3. This was wrong. I'm surprised that Jason (ZZFirst) of Gonow did not correct such thinking here.

If one takes a look at the body designs of these individual companies, it becomes clear.

As for Gonow, its only connection (currently) is its sale of Isuzu-based SUVs and pickup trucks to DR.

Joest
11-29-2007, 04:04 PM
I've double-checked and the DR3 and DR5 are actually Shuanghuan UFO.

Still, apart from Motor Authority, there's no word anywhere about cars being manufactured by Di Risio. This is quiet odd since in the past, Di Risio made a lot of annoucement.

You can check Di Risio's site here:

erik (laofan), cmvdc

The DR3 is Feidie (Jonway) UFO, (has nothing to do with Shuanghuan.)
The DR5 is Chery Tiggo 3.
DR imports also Gonow Pickup and SUV.
First there were talks that Bertone would assemble Gonows, now there are talks that Bertone will assemble the DR3 (the UFO).

Joest

I said "Shuanghuan" because in Germany, the CEO has the same importer as the Shuanghuan CEO and the Little Noble.

DR Motor presented production version of DR5, which is modified Chery Tiggo for European markets. This SUV in assembled in Italy from parts imported from China. The car is equiped with 1,6 litre gasoline engine with 81kW/109HP and Fiat's 1,9 diesel (89kW/120HP) engine. Suspension is also tuned for European roads.
Basic DR5 1,6 will be sold for in Italy for 16.900 EUR. Diesel will cost 21.900 EUR. The company plans to export car to Germany, France and Spain next year and hopes to sell 12.000 vehicles in 2008 and 40.000 in 2009. Too optimistic in my oppinion...

DR5 is doing very well in Italy.

Dr5 already in third place among the crossover two-wheel drive.

The DR5, crossover produced by the DR Group (Group Di Risio) on chassis derived from China's Chery TiGG, continues to do well on the domestic market: in January-August period, according to Unrae, the DR5 reported 1221 third positioning unit sold in the ranking of sales of "Crossover Drive Front" behind the Nissan Qashqai with as many as 14,336 units and Suzuki SX-4 with 1741 units. In the ranking followed by the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage and even the Fiat Sedici, models for which customers are moving more towards versions 4 x 4.

In just the month of August instead, the DR5 has even exceeded the Suzuki SX-4 positioning second with 140 units behind the Qashqai with over 940 units. Announced a success for a car whose current range is based on only 2 engines in front wheel drive petrol 1.6 16V 107 hp combined to LPG or CNG and diesel 1.9 Multijet 120 bhp, with prices starting at € 16,900. The range will expand further with the arrival of four-wheel-drive version and filter DPF diesel engine combined.

For now DR5 is available only at the sales network of 25 supermarkets Finiper while by the end of the year is planned to launch 50 new car dealers to mark DR, dealing with the new incoming (a Monovolume and Suv 7 seats).

And some information about DR1 from Gasgoo:
DR Motor, an Italian company engaged in the assembly and distribution of Chinese cars, will start to sell the rebadged version of Chery cars by mid-2009, a Automotive News report said Monday.

DR Motor is a subsidiary of DR Automobiles Groupe and sells about 8,000 vehicles a year in Italy and has annual revenues of about €250 million.

The DR1 car, a Chery Faira NN indeed, will be powered by Chery's self-developed 1.3-liter ACTECO engine, which can run on petrol (83 hp) or LPG (78 hp). Max speed is 156 km/h. Equipment includes dual airbags, ABS, electronic immobilizer, electric mirrors, manual air-con, rear parking sensors, CD-player.

While the Faira NN has to pass related European regulations for sale in Europe, a Chery spokesman in China said DR Motor is in charge of the DR1's homologation, according to the report.

Massimo Di Risio, CEO of DR Automobiles Groupe, is confident that the car will pass all the tests. He said he plans to begin selling it in Europe by mid-2009. He expects to sell 10,000 units a year by 2010.

Asked why the cars are sold under a rebadged brand, Chery spokesman Jin Yibo said tactfully that the EU is a sensible market and we shall only consider entering the region when all conditions permit.

The deal is an extension of Chery's relationship with the Italian firm. The companies have been working together since November 2007 and since then, DR Motor has been producing a version of the Chery Tiggo medium SUV from kits shipped from China.

The cars are assembled at a factory in Macchia d'Isernia, Italy. The plant has capacity to produce 12,000 units a year. DR Motor sells the SUV as the DR5 in Italy.

Last month the Munich-based car importer China Automobile Deutschland (CAD) began selling Chery A1, Easter CROSS and Tiggo across Germany under a Dragon brand in Germany, with the name of each of the imported models changed.

And, for the money, 7000 euro for DR1 and 6990 euro for the Matiz. DR1's prize is too high, 5500-6000 will be good, in my opinion, for Italian buyers.

DR Motor to sell rebadged Chery cars by mid-'09

Shanghai, December 9 (Gasgoo.com) DR Motor, an Italian company engaged in the assembly and distribution of Chinese cars, will start to sell the rebadged version of Chery cars by mid-2009, a Automotive News report said Monday.

Now it's all more creary? :)

DR MOTOR added two new bi-fuel versions of its well accepted DR5 SUV, run either on methane with petrol as back up or gas (LPG).
http://www.omniauto.it/magazine/8724/dr5-i-integrale

The 3500 orders collected from DR5 two-wheel-drive vehicles between December 2007 and May 2009 to give the manufacturer Molise thrust to launch a commercial version of the DR5-integral states already in the name of their goals 5-door 4x4 SUV. Unique, at least for the moment, the engine is available with this tension, the four-cylinder 2-liter of gasoline Acteco, with a maximum power of 128 hp and a torque of 180 Nm at 4000 rpm.

And speaking of strength, the second best-selling crossover in Italy, in "i-full" is equipped with 4WD system with electronic control of the Borg Warner. L '3rd ITM uses three elements of attrition and through a control module that receives data from the engine and wheels is capable of transferring torque from the front (standard condition) to a fair division (50:50) between the both axles in the event of problems with mobility. What is essentially a front-wheel drive becomes a four-wheel drive only when necessary, with management as "intelligent" the driving force (hence the "i" names). In the absence of a real wheel drive permanently, should therefore remain content consumption and softer suspension should continue to ensure road holding and comfort.

With regard to equipment and fittings, the i-DR5 full maintains the standard versions of a list already boasting a full-featured package including metallic paint, leather interior, heated front seats, front airbags, ABS, fog, air conditioning, sunroof electric, rims 16 "and radio CD-MP3-USB.

In addition to gasoline, which could frighten more than anybody in terms of running costs, you have the most acceptable versions LPG and methane that are also ecoincentivi state. The price of gas is 18,830 to 17,830 euros that become due to the contribution destruction / DR-exchange, while the same figure one can buy a bi-fuel petrol / LPG (20,330 euros to 1,500 euros less list of ecoincentivo state of destruction and 1,000 DR ). Just more expensive, but very convenient in terms of fuel costs is the i-DR5 full petrol / methane, whose final price of 18,830 euros is 21,330 euros from the list reduced from 2,500 euro bonus state. For those who want it is also available on new and more complete staging "Biz", obtainable with the disbursement of further 500.

At the launch of the new 4x4 version was updated for the installation of version 1.6, now includes heated front seats.

Hello Martin, the Riich M1 and the DR1 are both the 5-door version (Faira NN, S18A), the photo you show is the shorter 3-door version (Faira BB, S18B) which is not yet in production.

I know 3-door M1 is still not in production. Perhaps Chery and DR are jointly testing the car. Maybe both partners reached some kind of agreement under which Italians are testing performances of future Chery models on European roads and in our conditions.

Tets of DR5 2.0 Ecopower with new 2.0l (128 HP) engine at alvolante.it:
http://www.alvolante.it/primo_contatto/4x4_prezzo_popolare

The Italian journalist praised price and inside spaciousness but didn't like the quaility of built materials (cheap, hard plastic with bad finishing) and too noisy engine. But the biggest defectiveness is the lack of safety features. Only two airbaigs come as standard, ESP is not available even as an option.
The car is equiped among others with leather seats and electric sunroof. The only option are 18'' wheels.

people want clarity in rates and allocations in the automotive market and today there is no clarity.

Di Risio said that he has created this brand to sell cars at attractive prices but only in full version and this option because of the low cost of Chinese models.

DR models are much more beautifulthan chery model but the quality of these as you can see the various blogs, sites is very low and these cars are totally unreliable (in the proof of the Italian magazine Quattroruote dr1 it is blocked)
