 these are all fake..this will be china in 20 years
Really? Because they already all exist whenever I go there. These scenes are very commonplace in Chinese cities, I'm not particularly impressed with these pictures.

Actually, i was misleaded by one of the first pictures which has to be photoshopped, but majority of them seem to be accurate.
Now, im scared to ask, if shenzhen looks like this...how does beijing and shanghai look:confused:
Amazing... how many New York/Los Angelos sized cities do you have in china? How many cities look like the ones posted?
Chinese cities are very big and modern. Actually, you won't feel like you're in a developing country in many of them. Unlike many other developing countries, they are generally more organized, clean and free of slums. Also, these kind of skylines are very typical of Chinese cities. Here are some major ones.
I'll list them:
Shanghai
Beijing
Shenzhen
Hong Kong
Guangzhou
Chongqing
Dalian
Nanjing
Shenyang
Chengdu
Kunming
Urumqi
Tianjin
Wuhan
Fuzhou
Hangzhou
Zhengzhou

Urumqi, Capital of China's Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region. The city, although majority Han, is a big mix of different cultures, including Uighur, Kazakh, Hui Moslems and Kyrgyz. Uighurs are the majority in the province, they are a Moslem Turkish people, Caucasian features.
I have been to this province, it is an interesting place. You see a mix of Chinese and Islamic civilization here. Here is the view from People's Square.

They are pioneering many new energy technologies in this province. Outside the city, you will see electric windmills for miles on end. I was amazed at this sight as I entered the city on the highway from Turfan.

The city's growing skyline against the backdrop of majestic mountains. Urumqi is known as the city farthest away from any body of water in the world. It is also the greatest, most modern metropolis of all of Central Asia. Here you will see many Russian, Uzbek, Kazakh, Tajik, Pakistani, Indian, Kyrgyz, Iranian businessmen. It is a revival of the old Silk Road. You cannot believe there is such a modern city in Central Asia. Just hours from Afghanistan.

Local Mosque. Islam is the dominant region in Northwest China. Not just in Xinjiang, but also in Ningxia province, home of the Hui Moslems. There is also a strong Moslem influence in Gansu and Qinghai provinces.

Yeah, when I first went there I was amazed. I expected a backward, delapidated city in the middle of the desert. Instead, it was a city in a great natural setting, very clean, modern, and bustling.
The population is probably 3-4 million.

Urumqi new trade capital for the west
AP
Christopher Bodeen
Monday, March 13, 2006
Above the shouts of Afghan and Pakistani traders, a voice booms in heavily accented Putonghua in the airport in Urumqi, Xinjiang.
"You've got 20,000 meters of cloth?" a bearded trader thunders into a phone. "Great, but don't bother waking the boss. I'll call when I land."
Merchants from Lahore, Karachi and Kabul are struggling to get their purchases aboard a flight to Islamabad.
Businessmen in skull caps and traditional shalwar kameez outfits heave massive bundles to the check-in counter. Off to one side, their partners guard stacks of radio-controlled planes, talking dolls and stuffed animals.
Regional traders are flocking to Urumqi, now a city of four million people. They are part of a revival of a modern-day Silk Road powered by mobile phones and air travel.
Pakistan's trade with China grew 26 percent to a record US$3 billion (HK$23.4 billion) in 2004. It is projected to grow by another US$2 billion for 2005.
Sino-Indian trade has soared in recent years, from a mere US$1 billion in 1991 to US$13.6 billion last year.
The growth can be traced in part to Beijing's drive to lift incomes in the west. Xinjiang has seen its economy boom over the past half-decade: its total trade more than tripled between 2000 and 2004 to US$6 billion.
Trade is conducted in languages including English, the region's native Uygur and, increasingly, Putonghua.
Urumqi now boasts 50-story office blocks, gaudy stores and nightclubs. For sheer glitz and opportunity, there isn't a metropolis to rival it within 2,000 kilometers.
Traders say there's still plenty of room for growth, particularly if free- trade zones are set up.
Yet, like many watching the country's explosive growth, China-based shoe manufacturer Kasheef Gulzar worries that its massive exports will overwhelm businesses such as Pakistan's once-vaunted leather industry.
"It's hard to match their design and quality. They're becoming a kind of center of gravity for regional trade."
around 1.5 million population
That has to be an old figure. Because it was about 1.5 million back in 1990. There has been a lot of growth there, I think it is over 3 million at least now.
My hometown, Xiamen in Fujian province. Population is around 1.5 million. It is a nice charming city with a lot of culture.

Dalian, a prosperous clean port city in Northeastern China. Population, about 3 million. The former mayor Bo Xilai, who governed Dalian from the late 90's to only a couple years ago when he was promoted to being Liaoning Governor and then I think he is now commerce secretary, well, he's largely responsible for Dalian's new revolution. Dalian was formerly an industrial center that was in decline, but Bo had the vision to use sparse city funds to rejuvenate the city's ecosystem and improve the city's sanitation, infrastructure, and greenery instead of simply investing in more industries. He was criticized severely by many other officials, but his strategy paid off handsomely. Now, Dalian citizens are amongst the proudest amongst China and have a strong sense of civic pride and duty, and the beauty of the city has translated to an investment boom. Bo Xilai, who is the son of a famous revolutionary fighter, is one of the most competent and charismatic politicians in China. Many suggest he is due to succeed Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao as amongst a member in the next top central leadership.

Nanjing, China's Southern Capital. It was the capital of China during the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, and again, as the capital of the Republic of China (1912-1949) period. It is also the infamous place where the Japanese massacred over 300,000 people in a few short weeks. Today, it is the capital of Jiangsu province. It is a large city and growing prosperous.

firefox 04-19-2006, 08:37 PM If you are interested in the western architectures on page 6, this website may help to find about the history of Qingdao http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qingdao
I cant see the pictures in your posts Firefox. :nono:
:(
firefox 04-24-2006, 03:30 PM Can u see them now?
Can u see them now?
yeah, Qingdao is a nice city. It was a German colony for a couple decades, that's why there is a lot of German architecture there. It is also famous for its Beer Festival and its local Tsingtao Beer.
Are you from Qingdao, Firefox?
firefox 04-25-2006, 10:26 AM Qingdao is my favorite Chinese city but actually, I'm from Jinan, a city of the same size as Qingdao and in the same province.
Now I can see them! :D Great pictures Firefox!
fightingtorque 04-26-2006, 07:49 AM firefox, great pics. I lived in Qingdao for over 5 years - my chery still has a qingdao license plate.
great city.
anybody wants more insight into qingdao, check out www.myredstar.com and if you meet Mr Redstar ask him how the old beijing jeep is running - it used to be mine.
erik (laofan), cmvdc 04-26-2006, 08:59 AM Talking about Qingdao, does anybody of you know if the Etsong (Yizheng) factory is still working and producing the Chinese Rover Maestro (Lubao and Lande), even when the factory is sold to Shanghai GM-Wuling?
And what about this strange Xinxing factory of Dongfeng in Rongcheng, where the Little Prince (Xiao Wangzi) should be made, but what we only see is prototype after prototype? I there really a factory?
Erik (Laofan)
firefox 04-26-2006, 03:59 PM It seems that Etsong was out of production soon after the launch of this model for the extremely poor market response it received. Although I never verified this, one thing is sure however, that I haven't seen a single Etsong car in my city.
As far as the "Xiao Wangzi" of Rongcheng, first of all, I'm sooo sooo surprised that you even know this factory, it's just sooo small!!! Well, I'm pretty sure that it is closed now, or at least the Xiao Wangzi is no longer in production. There's another small factory in Rongcheng called Huatai which produces Terracan SUV under license with Hyundai, but this one is also at the verge of collapse as its cars are too expensive and therefore have little advantage compared to its competitors.
Nice to meet you Laofan, hope to see more of your comments about Chinese cars in future :)

Does anyone know the story behind this "new version of the Etsong Lubao, which has recently been unveiled" and when was it actually unveiled? I guess erik knows the source of the picture?
http://www.austin-rover.co.uk/images/news1005_07.jpg
firefox 04-26-2006, 05:46 PM I just searched 'Etsong Automobile' in Google China, sorry but I didn't find anything about this model. However, there is some information about the actual status of Etsong Auto which may be interesting. In fact, soon after the launch of Lubao, the company was taken over by FAW which intended to assemble the high-end Mazda9 at the plant. Then with the failure of this project, Faw soon lost interest in Etsong, the company was then resold to SAIC-GM Wuling for the making of mini-size vehicles.
There is almost no info about the actual product line of Etsong Motors, but considering it's owned actually by SAIC which obtained a part of Rover and that the etsong plant used to manufacture some Rover models, so I guess it is quite probable that Etsong continues to develop its existing Lubao modles.
firefox 04-26-2006, 06:26 PM If this was the story, then coincidentally there is another exemple of this kind but with another Shandong based car manufacturer - the once Yantai Daewoo Projet which, despite the huge investment of some billions yuan from provincial government, went finally in vain since the projet failed to get the agreement from the National Development and Reform Commitee, which meant that if the company insisted the manufacture, the vehicles could only be sold in the local Yantai market. Almost at the same moment, the Korean Daewoo Motors announced the bankruptcy and was soon obtained by GM whose Chinese partner was SAIC. Being a jointventure with Daewoo and without hope to commercialize its products in the national market, the Yantai Daewoo Company was naturally taken over by SAIC at a very low price. Today the plant, rebaptised '' Yantai SAIC-GM Dongyue Motor Company'' manufactures exlusively the GM mini vehicles like ''Sail''.
firefox 04-26-2006, 06:40 PM But wait a minute, sounds we're a little off-topic, no?
Windy 04-27-2006, 04:13 AM But wait a minute, sounds we're a little off-topic, no?
Yes off-topic - these need moving to an Etsong thread...
Your story seems correct, I have read much the same story but it doesn't explain that new model  I think Erik knows some more...
I hope the new Rover / MG chinese models are more successful than this older chinese one, although this was an Austin originaly not a Rover. There was also an MG version of it.
erik (laofan), cmvdc 04-27-2006, 08:04 AM Hello Windy, in April 2005 the Etsong (or Yizhong in Chinese) website (I am still a junior member, according a strange rule I am not allowed to give you a website, but is something like....etsongauto.com) suddenly showed an update of the Lubao. In fact there were four cars shown on this website:
Lubao QE 6400/ CA 6400 UA (this is the picture you show)
Lubao CA 6410 UA (with a new front end, 22 cm longer)
Lande CA 6440 UA/ CA 1020 (the van with a facelift)
Lubao CA 7131 sedan and travelling car (the Montego sedan and estate. Only a photo of the estate was shown.)
Two months later the factory was sold to SGM-Wuling. But the website stayed on the net for the whole year. Now it seems to be closed. The website of the tobacco company itself (yes, Etsong is a tobacco company) had some cars on it before, but now not anymore (....etsong.com).
The photo you show is from the etsongauto.com website.
More about Etsong you can find on ....austin-rover.co.uk/, follow the link Maestro/Montego, Maestro in China.
Greetings! Erik.
fightingtorque 04-27-2006, 09:34 AM i spent 5 years building and running a plant about 3 miles from the etsong car plant. it was a half decent idea originally, the idea was to start in 1998 and at that time they could have launched the maestro car, which looks kind of similar to a citroen Zx, but with a much lower price.
but it was too difficult a project to implement. they had the secondhand tooling but no bill of material, and they were a tobacco company with no experience of car making. and there were very few car makers in china then so you couldn't hire in experience either.
another problem, etsong never had a license to make cars, only to make agricultural vehicles. so they had to concentrate on the van version. they are a powerful force in qingdao and probably thought they could get round this, but there is a big difference between local influence and getting beijing to aprove a car project.
you sometimes see these cars about - i've seen the odd one in shanghai and saw one in nanjing today. i drove one once, it was ok, running with a toyota 1.4 engine from faw.

Thanks Erik, that has puzzled me for a while.
I guess they showed some old pictures which had not been seen before to help sell the factory - Sounds like its well dead now.
Does anyone know if the micro cars that are supposed to be produced there now exist yet and sell?
i drove one once, it was ok, running with a toyota 1.4 engine from faw.
You would have liked the MG turbo version better - that was officialy quicker than some Ferraris when it was launched in 1988!

And the not so glamorous city of Taiyuan where some of my friends live. It's very polluted and doesn't have the kind of western-style skyscrapers so popular in the coastal cities and Beijing. Taiyuan is the gateway to China's coal country, so it's kind of like a cold version of West Virginia.

Actually back in about 1990 my Dad had an MG Montego Turbo. I was about 18 then and the drag race king of Guildford. There were some issues with the car, like it blew through an SU carb when everything else including the non turbo MG Montegos had been on efi for a few years, and there was a lot of wheelspin and torque steer, but nobody else I knew could lay their hands on a 150 bhp car back then.
The Etsong factory did offer me a car cheap, and obviously the thought of inserting a 2.0 turbo motor did go through my mind.................

Trivia Tim 03-05-2007, 12:33 AM Also, these kind of skylines are very typical of Chinese cities. Here are some major ones.
I'll list them:
Shanghai
Beijing
Shenzhen

Thank you Edge, for neglecting to mention China's 12th, and the world's 99th, largest city - Harbin. My adopted hometown, Harbin is also called Moscow of the East, thanks to the many buildings that remain from when it was occupied by the Russians, and later the Japanese.
While not as developed as many of China's other big cities, Harbin is still a modern city, with more KFCs per head of population than anywhere in the world (complete speculation, but Harbinren really love their chicken burgers). But it does have the prettiest pedestrian precinct I've seen - Zhongyang Dajie...

Except its freezing cold outdoors for 60% of the year and the whole city stinks of beer brewing thanks to the excellent location of the Harbin beer brewery.
AND the most famous attraction (quite possibly the only) is 150rmb per ticket and staffed by Russian guards that dont really speak English, nor Chinese. Yes Im talking about the famous Harbin Ice Festival, the locals never seem to visit - its full of Japs, Koreans and Taiwanese that will never go somewhere so cold ever again.
Qingdao万岁! We have bettter beer. :p
dragin 03-05-2007, 01:06 PM i like small town life in europe...
china doesn't know how to protect historic buildings, she only want shit high buildings now...
Jikki, where are you when we need you?
Hope you didn't get in trouble for speaking your mind.....
you said a mouthful about the need to protect historic buildings, and I agree too about small town life, even in China.
But it seems to be an inevitable pitfall of developing countries. Tearing all the old stuff down indiscriminately that is.
The same happened in Japan and Korea. It's not until years later that the value of that great classical architecture is realized. Then there's an attempt to reproduce from photos ....but it's never the same.
Come on back Jikki......
Trivia Tim 03-05-2007, 10:02 PM Qingdao万岁! We have bettter beer. :p
That's fighting talk, that is! You can complain about Harbin's weather, and the horrendously over-priced tickets to the Ice and Snow World (the whole point of that is to keep the locals out) but you can never say anything bad about our beer. It's so good Anheuser Busch (sp?) bought the whole damned company! (but only bought a small stake in Qingdao)
