: SAIC Roewe 550
Admin 02-03-2007, 03:07 AM Ford pulled a shrewd move back in September when it exercised an option to purchase the rights to the Rover brand name from BMW, which meant that Chinese automaker SAIC couldn't use the brand name to sell the ex-Rover cars it had just won the rights to build. Hence, the Roewe brand was born and the 750E was unveiled soon after.
AutoExpress is now reporting that SAIC is readying a slap right back at Ford in the form of a Focus fighter for the European market.
The small family hatch will come in both three- and five-door models, and it's being developed locally in the U.K. by Ricardo 2010, an engineering firm bought by SAIC that just happens to employ a number of ex-Rover employees.
2010 was also responsible for reengineering the Roewe 750, which will go on sale in Europe later this year.
The small car is being developed using the RDX60 chassis, a still-born platform that didn't get the chance to see the light of day before Rover went bankrupt.
We find it amusing SAIC is developing a car to take on the Focus considering Ford threw a major wrench in their works by buying the rights to the Rover name at the last minute. The Rover name will likely never be commercially used by Ford, which wasn't keen on the idea of Chinese-built passenger vehicles being confused with its high-end, off-road Land Rovers.

cryptonx 02-04-2007, 09:44 AM lol FORD ,,, sick :P
SAIC ... smart :P but hope they pull it off , I hate Ford(S)
phaeton 02-04-2007, 07:47 PM LOL Its taken Kia/Hyundai a while to get a proper Focus fighter.
Not sure on sales for the new Cee'd but it has been well received.
I'd be skeptical on a Roewe Focus fighter as would the Europeans ;)
MartinW 02-05-2007, 02:35 AM Assuming it is based on the original RDX60 that was being prepared at the time of the colla[se, then it has every chance of at least competing with Focus. But back in the 90s Rover raised the bar and by comparison Ford and GM took another few years to catch up and get ahead of Rover.
4*real*Made_in_China 02-05-2007, 12:16 PM I just read about that in TopGear. They took a tour of the Longbridge facility and found the prototypes there. Complete with Sedan(Saloon), 5 and 3 dr hatch and I think a wagon too. I looked it up- its based on a modified Rover 75 platform. Its supposed to be "the car that would have saved Rover". If they'd had the money(it was ready, they just couldn't afford to launch it).I guess its good that something's come out of it.:D

Its been uncovered!
jmsteiny 03-12-2007, 03:50 AM Now THAT is a really, REALLY beautiful car. I could DEFINTELY enjoy driving (and be seen driving) that car!! I'm also wondering what the new Roewe 250 is going to look like.........anyone know of any pics???
I also just saw the 750 for the first time (it was on display in the Guangzhou airport) and it is quite impressive to see in real life. However, I'll take the 450 ANY day over the 750.........I can't WAIT to see the 450 for real when it finally gets here!!:)
daewoo-chevrolet 03-12-2007, 05:20 AM It looks really nice, this is still a photoshop, but realistic if you compare this to the spy shots.
The 750 also looks really nice, but it's a pity that the brand is called Roewe and not Rover. And Roewe will arrive in Europe in 2010 and then the 750 is old-fashioned.
boogiecat 04-02-2007, 03:06 AM Yikes it looked like a VW Jetta....Oh well at least will see this one fares soon..
mgrovernut 04-02-2007, 04:35 PM It's a bit plain...
BringIt 04-03-2007, 12:50 PM Def has a VW flavor, but overall a very nice and unique design - I like it!!!
I've got to say SAIC has got it together. Great job!
phaeton 04-03-2007, 07:03 PM WOW nice :D

I think it will ;)

Well done SAIC :)

chabbu 04-17-2007, 10:10 AM I second that, very nice indeed.
chabbu 04-17-2007, 10:11 AM Oh BTW, is this the "450"?
Windy 04-17-2007, 12:05 PM There seems to be some argument about that but yes, I think it is what the British press nicknamed the Roewe 450.

mgrovernut 04-22-2007, 06:15 PM ..looks like Nanjing may stop SAIC making this car as SAIC don't seem to have the right to use any Rover 75 components in other designs.... As I understand it the IPR's can not be transferred to other models without express permission from the owners of MGR's physical assets (which is Nanjing basically)
I hope SAIC haven't spent to much money on this as Nanjing may demand it goes to the crusher.....
BringIt 04-23-2007, 02:26 PM The rear of the car is fantastic - the entire car has a lot of Alfa Romeo in it, which is a good thing.
Please bring it to market and the US soon.
Windy 04-23-2007, 04:21 PM Interesting design of boot lid - its going to collect a pool of water in the middle whenever it rains, I wonder where it will go when you open the boot?
Not sure from the picture, but maybe if you park it on an absolutely flat road then you may be OK.
proximal 04-23-2007, 06:12 PM Interesting design of boot lid - its going to collect a pool of water in the middle whenever it rains, I wonder where it will go when you open the boot?
I'd assume it has a drainage channel around the edge of the trunk opening. I don't think I've ever seen a car with a trunk that didn't have this.
Windy 04-26-2007, 07:25 AM They are renaming the W2 as the Rongwei 5 series - maybe the 550
http://auto.sohu.com/20070426/n249719486.shtml
Puppetland 04-26-2007, 04:48 PM In this intriguing battle between SAIC and NAC, regarding who can get the best out of what was left of the MGR fiasco, SAIC, at the present time, seem to have all the answers. Their 750 looks like a convincing face lift of the Rover 75 and the appearance of their 450 shows they are determined for their Roewe brand to succeed.
At the other end of the scale we have NAC who seem intent on sticking the MG badge on ANYTHING.
Now it's the turn of the Rover Streetwise to suddenly transform itself into an MG. :nono:
mgrovernut 04-26-2007, 05:08 PM Depends on how you look at this:
- NAC have a THE MOST advanced factory in China with capacity to make 200,000 cars and 250,000 engines and gearboxes. The factory can also make more models on one line than any factory in the world (allegedly)
- Roewe can make 50,000 car a year, although they seem to be struggling to make many cars at all at the moment (there's a question mark on their actual ability to make thousands of 75's without the Longbridge Robots).
- Will Brits by a fake British car from a company with a fake British Brand?
- Nanjing may be rolling out the old models but it seems that the MG ZS will be heavily changed from the old one (new sheet metal).
- The Roewe 450 looks nice but so does the Briliance Zhongua but that' rubbish. The ZS is proven technology.
- MG have redesigned the K series so it stops blowing head gaskets and is Euro 4 compliant. The Roewe is the old engine completley unchanged.
- MG have their own Diesels close to production. Where will Roewe's come from?
- MG ZT LWB is longer AND significantly lighter than the stretched Roewe version. Why? Remember the ZT LWB was designed and engineered in Britain. Are you still confident in a crash in the Roewe 750?
- MG's will all be NCAP tested. What about the Roewe's?
- New Sportscar will be launched within 2 years by MG
- Range of new Austins will be launched from next year.
Scratch beneath the surface at Roewe and there are plenty of unanswered questions.....maybe that's why SAIC are considering trying to do a merger deal? Nanjing don't seem keen though....wonder why?
it is very nice car. if SAIC can solve the process/manufacturing issues, i think the users will probably accept it.
Now in China or in the world, concept car is very nice and beautifully, but in the process of development, it may be changed due to manufacturing issue, cost issue, assembly issue. Otherwise the quality might be poor or unreliable.
any photo to show the interior.

martin_krpan 01-24-2008, 09:56 AM From Global Auto Sourcing:
After its Rover75-based Roewe 750 was launched in Chinese market last March, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) started to develop its second Roewe-branded sedan--Roewe 550. The sedan is set to debut at the upcoming Beijing Auto Show this April and go on sale in June, Xinhua News Agency reports today.
Priced at 120,800 Yuan to 160,000 Yuan (US$16,575-22,099), Roewe 550 is set to compete with models like Mazda3, Honda Civic, Ford Focus and VW Sagitar. It is 4,624 mm in length, 1,827 mm in width, 1,480 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,705 mm. The turbocharged engine could turn out a maximum of 118 kW.
"Roewe 750 absorbs the advanced Rover technology, but this car (Roewe 550) is definitely a technology innovation by SAIC on its own. It's based on a brand new platform, very different from Rover," said an unnamed SAIC official.
Roewe 550 is independently built by SAIC's technology center in Anting, the west suburbs of Shanghai. The automaker said that the center, together with its design workshops in Nanjing, Korea and UK, will develop about local brand models.
Road-test for the car has already been finished.

martin_krpan 02-20-2008, 10:27 AM Roewe 550, on the market in July 2008
The Roewe 550, is set to be launched onto the Chinese market by July 2008, presumebly after Roewe have shown off the 550, and the 750 1.8t at the Beijing International Car Show later this year.
The Roewe 550 uses the same 1.8t engine as the the Roewe 750 1.8t, which reaches Chinese 3 emissions standards. The Chinese motoring press believe the Roewe 550 is one of the best Chinese cars to go up against the likes of the Mazda 3, Civic, and the Focus in the Chinese market. The 550 measures 4624mm long by 1827mm wide and 1480mm tall. Some people are hoping the Roewe 550 will be reworked into the MG5 and see European production begin in MGs British factory.
Roewe 550 pricing is expected to be 120,000rmb to 160,000rmb when launched in China.

Rally Red Lancer GTS 03-28-2008, 07:04 AM I think the Roewe W2(550) is one of the nicer looking new Chinese cars to come to market. What surprised me was that they are tarketing this car to compete with the likes of the Mazda3, Ford Focus, etc. It looks more like Chrysler Sebring, Ford Fusion and Hyundai Sonata(midsize)size to me.
If I studied it's dimensions closely I may see that it's more closely made size-wise to compete with the compacts, though. My '08 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS is considered a compact car. I wonder about any possible plans to export this new Roewe 550 car to the U.S.

martin_krpan 04-29-2008, 10:29 AM Roewe 550 to be sold in June at 130,000-180,000 yuan.
At this Beijing auto show, SAIC launched the all-new compact sedan Roewe550 as its global premiere and will deliver it to the market in June this year.
Gao Weiming, general manager of the technical center of SAIC, said Roewe 550 will be the most intelligent car of Chinese-made mid-class sedans and thus is called the "D5 all-time digital sedan." Sources from SAIC said the model is expected to be sold in June at prices between 130,000 yuan ($18,570) and 180,000 yuan.
As a "D5 all-time digital sedan," Roewe550 demonstrates its digital intelligence through its driving management, information display and entertainment aspect. The integrated in-car entertainment system will offer the RMI (Roewe Multimedia Interface) digital multimedia interactive system, which combines integrated information delivery systems, GPS and information functions. The Dual-Bus digital intelligence driving management enhances the reliability of vehicle information transmission and lowers the failure rate of electric system. Moreover, the Syn-Tech upgrade module provides varies of individual module choices.
In the safety aspect, equipped with USD vehicle body and Slip control system (SCS)—ABS+EBD+CBC+MSR+TCS+VSC, Roewe550 meets the five-star-level crash requirements not only of China New Car Assessment Programme(CNCAP) but also of the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP).It is also equipped with racing-level four-wheel independent suspension system and powered by a Kavachi1.8T high performance all-aluminum cold turbocharging engine which generates an output at 118kw and consumes only 6L in 100km. The emissions meet European IV standard.
According to Gao Weiming, the hatchback Roewe550 has been designed besides the going-on-sale notchback Roewe 550. He also said that a 1.8L engine is offered for choice besides the 1.8T engine of Roewe 550.
The Roewe 550 will be officially launched for the market at a SAIC show in June 2008 according to our sources. The 550 was shown to the world at the recent Beijing Auto Show and gained wide attention from both domestic and foreign visitors to the show, many acclaimed the Roewe 550 as the finest Chinese made vehicle to date, and who are China Car Times to argue with that?
The Roewe 550 is an ‘intelligent sedan‘ according to SAIC, this comes in form of the D5 digital dashboard which is also known as a driving management system. What this exactly does, is still a bit of a mystery to China Car Times. Obviously its based on the infamous talking Maestro, a distant cousin of the modern day Roewe 550. The D5 digital dash offers the RMI (Roewe Multimedia Interface) which is a DVD screen, GPS navigation, an ‘information delivery system‘ The autobox transmission is also hooked up to the D5 system, which apparently lowers the risk of electrical failure.
Cool stuff aside, the Roewe 550 does have a safe and boring side (although, there is nothing wrong with that) The 550 does come jam packed with every safety acronym they could think of: Slip control system (SCS) ABS, EBD, CBC, MSR, TCS, VSC. The 550 is also built to European NCAP 5 star crash test safety standards, as well as the Chinese CNCAP 5 star safety standards. The 1.8T engine, a modified K-Series engine (hint, no blowing head gaskets) has been upgraded to Euro 5 emissions standards, and is very fuel efficient with it needing only 6l of fuel for 100km of travel.
And in other Roewe 550 news: SAIC are busy working on a hatchback version of the Roewe 550, and possibly an SUV. Who said they didnt get their monies worth out of the Rover-MG fire sale?

Rally Red Lancer GTS 05-30-2008, 09:08 PM Nice midsize sedan there. I would love to read a Motor Trend magazine comparo between this sedan and the Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata, Mercury Milan, Kia Optima, etc. This car's body design trumps some of the midsize sedans available in America right now. If I were SAIC I'd look in to making this car available for sale in the United States.

martin_krpan 06-20-2008, 03:25 AM June 20, 2008.
China's largest automaker Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) has officially started to sell its own-brand Roewe 550 sedan in China on Thursday, priced at 142,800 ($20,765) - 189,800 yuan.
SAIC has not given any timeline for exporting the model but said it's a world-class car targeting global consumers. Early media reports say this car will hit the European market in early 2009.
The Roewe 550 was unveiled by SAIC at the 2008 Bejing Auto Show in April. It is set to compete with models like Mazda3, Honda Civic, Ford Focus and VW Sagitar. The Roewe 550 is based on the Rover 75, but is shortened, modified and restyled. It is 4,624 mm in length, 1,827 mm in width, 1,480 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,705 mm. The turbocharged engine could turn out a maximum of 118 kW.
Currently SAIC owns the intellectual property of Rover and MG models and has already relaunched the old Rover 75 as the Roewe 750 in the Chinese market in early 2007. Sales of Roewe 750 have reached 25,000 units so far.
The Roewe 550 officially jumped onto the Chinese market place earlier today, pricing was announced, as were specifications of the car. Now all we have to do is test drive the car, or at least buy one!
The 550 is China’s first ‘international car’, the car which will clearly shape China as a make it or break it car producing country. The car was designed in the UK, by the hands of Ricardo 2010 who eventually became under SAICs control. From what we believe, the Roewe 550 will eventually be branded as an MG, and then sold into overseas markets, we have heard rumors of the Roewe brand actually being launched in overseas markets, but we cant say for sure.
The Roewe 550 is available in four different packages:
* 550 Standard - 140,280rmb (manual trans)
* 550D - 150,280rmb (manual trans)
* 550S - 150,680rmb (auto trans)
* 550D - 160,680rmb (auto trans)
* 550G - 180,980rmb (auto trans)
Tomorrow we will translate the Roewe 550’s spec sheet, although its looking like the 550G is the model with all the trimmings (airbags in every place possible) and the others only lacking certain items, which is reflected by the minor differences in the price range. The prices are a little higher than CCT expected, but not by much. We really cant wait to get behind the wheels of a Roewe 550 and tell the world what the ride is like.

sold under Ssangyong dealership and brand?
That doesnt seem a smart move. I am familiar with the Ssangyong in Africa, Portugal, Spain and Italy. They're aceptance by the market is low. the after sales service and spare parts is bad.
I dont see it as a improvement

mememe 08-09-2008, 09:05 AM TRW safety system featured on new SAIC Roewe 550
August 09, 2008
TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. , the global leader in automotive safety systems, is supplying a full range of occupant safety products to the new Roewe 550, China SAIC Motor's self-developed mid-size sedan. This marks an expanded collaboration between TRW and SAIC, who worked together on the successful launch of the Roewe 750 in 2007.
TRW equips Roewe 550 with a complete occupant safety system (OSS) including driver, passenger and rear seat belts, driver and passenger airbags, side-impact curtain airbags, airbag electronic control units, and side-impact and rollover sensors. Driver and passenger airbags are manufactured by the Company's joint-venture plants in Shanghai and Changchun, China. TRW's wholly- owned OSS facility in Shanghai produces the advanced electronics.
Roewe 550 features the RP2, TRW's second-generation rack-and-pinion seatbelt retractor. In anticipation of a crash, an electronic control unit activates the rack and pinion mechanism to tighten the seat belt, adjust the slack and help protect the belted passenger. Additionally, TRW uses a load limiter in the Roewe 550 seat belt system to help better manage the occupant energy in a crash.
The RP2 technology was introduced to the European market in 2004. Today, Chinese consumers are able to benefit from this advanced technology on the Roewe 550. Notably, the entire seat belt system on Roewe 550 is manufactured by TRW's joint venture with SAIC, Shanghai TRW Automotive Safety Systems Co., Ltd. (STASS).
Besides OSS products, TRW supplies Roewe 550 with a lane-departure warning sensor, ABS system and Electronic Stability Control System (as a premium option), all produced locally in China.

martin_krpan 09-02-2008, 11:43 AM Roewe 550 review at China Car Times
China Car Times had the pleasure of test driving a cherry red Roewe 550 earlier today, we left with a massive grin on our faces too.
Exterior Overview:
The Roewe 550 is based on the excellent Rover 75 platform, suspension included. The front end of the Roewe 550 has been criticized for looking a bit too much like a Gillette razor blade, the bonnet has two creases running down the center which gives the car quite an aggressive, sporty appearance. The design is such a breakaway from the classiness of the Roewe 750, we’re wondering if the 750 will get the Gillette style front grill in 2009. The car actually looks quite porky, very rotund, which is also a break from the cigar styled Roewe 750. The 550 measures 4624mm long, 1827mm wide, and 1480mm high, making it a low down car which gives it a sporty stance. Compare that to the Roewe 750 sizing which measures a stately 4865mm long, 1765mm wide, and 1422mm tall. So the 550 is wider, taller, but shorter than the 750, and when you’re driving the 550, it really does feel like you’re in control of a super-mini.
The Interior:
The interior on many of the Chinese made cars is what lets China down as a car making nation, the interiors of Geely, Brilliance (zhonghua), Chery, and a whole host of other manufacturers have (mostly) mastered the art of designing a car (i.e. let the Italians do it), the art of building a car (get your Japanese/German partners to help) but the interiors? Some of them are circa 1970’s Datsun. The Roewe 550 is possibly first Chinese car that actually bucks the interior trend, the leather seats come in two different colors (black, or tan) they support you well, they are comfortable as a seat should be. In addition, the seats can be eased into a million different positional combinations thanks to the series of knobs down the side of the seat, the little knobs and levers almost reminded us of the ‘three sea shells’ in the Demolition Man movie, we couldn’t get them into position properly either, but then I remembered that Roewe is pushing the ‘digital generation’ theme on this car, anything that could be electrically controlled is electrically controlled. We hope the electrical demons that plagued British cars of past, don’t catch up with us in 2008. The dashboard sweeps elegantly from side to side, the dash styling looks like it may have been borrowed from SAIC’s Ssangyong brand.
Some might consider the digital center console to be a nod towards the talking dashboards of previous Austin cars, cars that share common heritage and DNA with the modern 550. When you push the massive ‘wise key’ into the equally massive slot, the dashboard lights up, then you can use the ‘three sea shells’ to move your seat into a suitable driving position. Even Captain Kirk, aboard his Starship did not get so many options on how to sit, or fly his vessel. The counters light up in a racy red color, the in dash screen also lights up in red, giving you the options of playing a DVD, listening to music via CD or SDcard (there is a discreet SDcard slot in the dashboard), loading up the GPS Navigation, utilizing the ultra clear reversing camera or just sitting and looking pretty until you need it. The center arm rest opens up to reveal a twin-can drinks cooler, its actually air conditioned, with a small opening at the bottom that can be opened or closed as needed. Next to the arm rest-come-cooler is an ingenious pop drinks holder – we’ve seen pop out cup holders, but never pop up. The hand brake is also a minor work of art, when on, the handbrake is raised out of the center divider, but when down, it disappears like a chameleon into the splendid wood finish of the dash and center. The boot is reasonably big, and the rear seats fold down to allow a greater storage area, although the seat do not fold entirely flat as they would on an SUV or estate, it allows for a much greater cargo area.
The Drive:
Now onto the important bit. The gearbox on the one we tested was a 5speed autobox, with a sports mode, and the usual automatic P,R,N, and D. As well as a gearstick, the Roewe 550 has F1 style paddle shifters either side of the steering wheel, up a gear on the right, and down a gear on the left. As previously mentioned, you push the massive key into the on dash keyslot, push it in once to start the electrics, then push it in deeper to start the car. The car starts with an impressive growl, to stop the engine, you have to push it in again, and it pops out. The key strikes us a useless novelty, but as a ‘digital generation’ car, perhaps it will sell more. The key is rather large, and we wouldn’t to walk around with it in our pockets, lest people start wondering if im packing heat, perhaps shoving it in the wasteline of my jeans would make me look gangsta?
As I set off, I was impressed by the quietness of the car, granted we were rolling slowly towards a junction but I had to look down at the RPM counter just to make sure the engine was ticking over, because you just couldn’t hear it at all from the cabin! We rolled out towards the junction, to a traffic light, then onto the highway. Setting off from the traffic light I left it in drive, but soon moved it into sports mode to gain control of the F1 flippers either side of the wheel. The gear changes in Drive were not totally smooth, and suffered from minor gear shock when changing up, quite a difference from the silky smooth CVT transmissions Im used to on my Nissans. The paddle shifters work very well, and the all important turbo kicked in as soon as we hit around 40kph, giving the car a noticeable boost. One minor niggle I found were the tiny wing mirrors, they may look sporty, but they aren’t very practical, and make changing lanes a dicey affair. The 550 takes corners with ease at low speeds, and higher speeds, with no noticeable body speeds, the sound of the engine once over 60kph is quite a nice growl for a smaller 1.8 turbo engine, the same engine that graced the Rover 75, Roewe 750, and MG7 1.8T, the 160BHP that the engine produces are not slack when it comes to strutting their stuff. The brakes on the model that I tested were a little spongy, although perhaps that is to be expected of a car that only done 300km in its short life as a test model. The handling of the 550 is quite impressive, once you’re on the open road the car is easy to open up, and will effortlessly hit high speeds, the small steering wheel is amazingly responsive, giving you the feeling that you’re actually driving a super mini and not a 4.5m long car.
In previous articles on China Car Times, the Roewe 550 has been talked up a lot, and truth be told, it’s a car that lives upto those promises. Its luxurios on the inside with its funky technological dashboard, imported German leather seats, excellent woodwork (better than the MG7’s!) and great quality plastics. It drives like any of its MG predasseors did, if not better, and the best thing of all? Its cheap. The model we test drove was on the market for 180,680rmb, this model with its refinements and quality puts a serious thorn in the side of its international competitors in China, chiefly those in similar price ranges and body styles, such as the Ford Focus, VW Sagitar (Jetta in Europe), VW Magotan etc. If there were a car that would push China forward as a mass car producing nation, it would be the Roewe 550. The 550, with the help of SAIC’s international design teams, has side stepped those ‘awkward generations’ that Japanese and Korean car companies found themselves in when it came to making cars. The 550 is a car that will prove to European customers that when China utilizes its greatest assets, it can produce a car that can win over the competition, and more importantly willing buyers. But would my aging uncles buy such a car? Probably not, the amount of technology in the car is quite frankly baffling, gone are the retro designs of the late 90’s and early 2000’s, ex-Rover designers are certainly strutting their stuff for SAIC in Lemington-Spa, and we cant wait to see what they bring out next. If anyone in Europe wanted a car to replace their Rover 45, or even MG ZS, then the Roewe 550 will be that car, albeit possibly as an MG5.
mememe 09-19-2008, 07:08 PM SAIC opens third plant in city with Roewe 550
2008-9-20
SAIC Motor Corp yesterday opened a 150,000-unit production facility in Shanghai as part of an effort to lead China's self-branded vehicle market.
The 1.2 million-square-meter factory is located in Lingang Industrial Zone, 75 kilometers south of downtown Shanghai, and cost 2.9 billion yuan (US$424.2 million), said Chen Zhixin, executive vice president of SAIC Motor. The first phase will cover around 670,000 square meters.
It will be the nation's largest auto maker's third passenger car plant, enabling SAIC to have a total capacity of 300,000 self-branded cars a year in full operation.
"We are committed to be the leader in China's self-branded car market and form our own competitiveness for sustained growth," said Chen.
SAIC has another two plants in Yizheng and Nanjing in Jiangsu Province after it took over the smaller domestic rival Nanjing Auto at the end of last year.
Besides the production expansion, the Chinese partner of General Motors Corp and Volkswagen AG, has also set up three engineering centers in China and overseas.
The Shanghai plant was unveiled yesterday with a Roewe 550 rolling off the assembly line. The vehicle is SAIC's second self-owned model, following the Roewe 750 mid-to-high class sedan introduced in early 2007.
Chen said the Lingang plant was designed to make six models on two platforms. A new mid-class sedan would be launched by the end of next year.
The car maker was also developing a compact car in the Nanjing hub in addition to a new engine with smaller replacement, he said.
SAIC is one of a raft of domestic car makers aggressively taking initiatives to develop Chinese-owned vehicles in moves to be more independent from their overseas partners and enhance global competitiveness.
SAIC said it aimed to produce 600,000 units of self-designed cars by 2010, including 200,000 units of self-designed passenger cars and 400,000 units of commercial cars with self-developed technology.
Self-designed cars are expected to account for 30 percent of SAIC's total sales of 2 million cars by 2010.

mememe 12-24-2008, 04:35 PM Chery, SAIC cars get five-star ranking in crash tests
2008-12-24
China's domestically made cars are making progress in terms of safety, with the Chery A3 and SAIC Roewe 550 getting five-star rankings in crash tests, said the China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC) in Tianjin on Wednesday.
Only one star below the top rank, it is the best result ever achieved by domestic-made vehicles. The Hongqi car got such a ranking earlier this year, said the CATARC director Zhao Hang.
The Mercedes-Benz C200 from Beijing Benz-DaimlerChrysler Automotive Co and Faw-Volkswagen's New Bora also got five stars in the fourth batch of crash tests of seven models.
The center tested 28 models in 2008, bringing the total number of tested domestic models to 65, which came from 90 percent of the domestic auto manufacturers, CATARC official Wu Wei said.
Testing started in 2006.
The proportion of five-star cars rose from 8.3 percent in 2006 to 36 percent in 2007 and 46 percent in 2008, Wu said.
More than 30 percent of all tested models got only two- or three-star results, said Wu.

lpite 03-05-2009, 11:40 AM The fact that a Chinese company can design a decent original car makes it even more shameful that the other Chinese companies persist in stealing other automakers' designs. There's no excuses anymore.

I found the answer for my question: both board computer and navigaton system can set to english. The nav.system can set manually, while board computer only can set by factory or repair shop via data cable.

KiwiGuy 11-06-2009, 03:00 PM Possible Hybrid 550 in the works
From China Car Times:
The hybrid car market in China has yet to be exploited on a wide scale, BYD have entered the market with their BYD F3DM but that has yet to see mass market sales, the Prius is sold in China with a sky high price tag as is the Honda Civic Hybrid, Toyota are making waves about bringing their Camry hybrid to China but nothing has been cemented as of yet.
The Roewe 550 really is the dark horse of the Chinese car industry, its a Chinese built (with British help) compact sedan that has managed to take on the almighty Ford Focus in the compact sedan segment and has actually managed to hold its own against the mighty media machine of the blue oval. The Focus is a well established car in China with a well established media presence, the Roewe brand on the other hand is the plucky underdog that has only been on the market for less than three years but has managed to build up a brand and held its own against the multinational car companies.
SAIC are working on a hybrid version of the Roewe 550 which is going to launch in 2010 according to media reports. A mixture of Roewe and SAIC vehicles are going to be used at the world expo event in Shanghai, and will be a mixture of pure electric cars, fast charging electric buses, CNG vehicles and hybrid vehicles.
The source of batteries for a future Roewe 550 are still under debate, SAIC have reportedly talked with BYD, Korean manufactures and other foreign manufacturers with regards to battery supplies. A hybrid test model is apparently already undergoing road testing, and will save upto 50% fuel over its gasoline using cousin. SAIC are reportedly preparing Roewe 550 hybrids, as well as plugin pure electric models.
Rally Red Lancer GTS 11-06-2009, 10:27 PM I'll tell ya what-if they bring one in hybrid form in that sports package with the ignition orange paint job sign me up for a potential purchase! That sucka in that copper-orange mix with those hot rims and cool spoiler is hotter than hades! If a hybrid version comes as an import to the U.S. I am right there for a test drive. That is one good lookin' car and I think that if Roewe brings it here it will sell.
BTW-that car looks more midsize than compact. For a comparo just look at my Rally Red Lancer GTS in my posts. My Lancer GTS is a compact. See the difference? That Roewe 550 is a midsize car, friends.
