China's First Automobile Works (FAW) Group aims to sell over 2 million vehicles a year by 2010.

If this target is reached, sales revenue in 2010 will exceed 200 billion yuan. Over 1 million of the vehicles sold will be designed and produced locally.

The principles of development for the Eleventh Five-Year Plan are self-development and cooperation.

FAW also established five development strategies of its own for this period: innovation in products and skills, increasing exports of cars (as oppose to car parts), developing products with high added value by improving research, overseas expansion and digital management.

It's cars AND trucks, including those for commercial use, and includes all divisions of FAW, JV with VW, Toyota, Mazda, etc.

Total auto sales in China was 6, 7? million last year? I'm almost certain FAW accounted for more than 1 million of those.

FAW posts net profit of $1.67 billion.

December 26, 2007 – The First Automotive Works (FAW), one of China’s Big Three automakers, has posted a net profit of RMB 12.3 billion ($1.67 billion) this year, up 252 percent year-on-year, China state new agency Xinhua reported today.

FAW-Toyota has two production units in Tianjin. The first plant has a capacity of 120,000 units, producing Corolla and Vios vehicles and the second plant has a capacity of 100,000 units, producing Crown and Reiz vehicles.

The FAW-Toyota joint venture opened a third plant in Tianjin in May with annual capacity of 200,000 units. Its total capacity in Tianjin rose to 420,000 units in 2007.

With the launch of Sagitar, Magotan and C class Audi this year, FAW-VW sold 427,950 vehicles in the first 11 months this year, up 41.2 percent from one year earlier.

In teh beginning of March the delegation of FAW visited Serbian auto manufacturer Zastava-Yugo. Members of the delegation inspected assembly lines and potentials of the factory in the city of Kraguljevac and promised that this visit is only the beginning of the cooperation bertween two companies.
Zastava-Yugo is currently in the hands of serbian government which plans to sell it to highest bidder in the near future. One of other possible candidates for purchase is Italian FIAT. But many other prominent names have been subject of speculations also.
Chinese will also visit Serbian truck manufacturer FAP which is also in the process of privatisation.

China's FAW Car saw losses in own brand sales.

April 9, 2008 - FAW Car Co, a unit of the China's largest automaker First Automotive Works (FAW) Group Corp., said that its two major own brand models, Besturn and Red Flag, lost a total of RMB 200 million ($28.5 million) last year, local news paper Beijing Morning News reported yesterday.

The company announced that its net profit doubled to RMB 552.87 million in 2007 from RMB 276.53 million in the previous year, but this profit was not generated by its own three vehicle brands. Own brand passenger car model Besturn and Red Flag lost RMB 150 million and RMB 50 million respectively in 2007.

Mazda6 is the only profitable model of the automaker, with net profit rising 37.5% from a year earlier to RMB 47.8 million.

In an effort to reverse the slumping of demands for its models, FAW Car Co plans spend RMB 2.1 billion this year in three projects to boost its capacity and competitiveness, and more than 70 percent of the total investment will be injected into developing own brand vehicles.

The company will first invest RMB 821 million in developing a new own-brand car based on its Besturn platform, it said in a filing with Shenzhen Stock Exchange on April 2, cited by Bloomberg news.

It will spend RMB 575 million supporting production of the revamped Mazda6. It aims to build 60,000 revamped Mazda6s by the end of the year, it added.

Construction of the RMB 695 million engine plant, with an annual capacity of 90,000 units, is likely to take 18 months, the Changchun-based carmaker said. This plant will be used to develop self made engines.

FAW profit more than triples in Q1
By Jin Jing 2008-4-28

FAW Car Co Ltd reported net profit more than tripled in the first quarter this year on strength of sizzling car sales and cost reductions.

FAW Car, the listed unit of the nation's second-biggest car maker, posted net income of 311.76 million yuan (US$45.2 million) from January to March, an increase of 261.08 percent from a year earlier, the car maker said in its statement to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange today.

Changchun, Jilin Province-based FAW Car posted revenue of 4.9 billion yuan, representing a 71 percent increase year on year.

Sales increased 70 percent to 280,000 units, outpacing the 22 percent growth in the overall passenger car market.

A growing economy has made cars more affordable to Chinese customers, prompting car makers to expand capacity and launch new models to tap rising demand.

FAW Car earlier said it would spend 575 million yuan to update assembly lines and add another 60,000 units to production capacity.

The company plans to make use of additional production to make new models including a Mazda 6 wagon and other B-segment models within one-and-a-half years.

FAW Car will also build more Besturn models, which were self designed, at a cost of 821 million yuan through 2009 due to growing demand for homegrown vehicles.

The central government has encouraged the development of the domestic auto industry.

FAW talks with Ford to buy into Changan Ford Mazda.

May 7, 2008 - FAW Car is in talk with Ford to buy into or acquire the production line of Changan Ford Mazda, an insider close to FAW's top management said recently to the 21st Century Business Herald.

"Ford Motor holds 33% share of Mazda Motor. Ford and FAW have been in close contact," the sources said. Currently the two carmakers have reached an initial agreement, and FAW is applying for the approval from the central government and expect the government's regulatory body to okay this deal.

FAW and Ford's partner Mazda also have a joint venture (JV), and their JV's sales company FAW Mazda Motor Sales Co. has met some discord from Changan Mazda over the sales rights of the Mazda-3 vehicles. The results of contact and talk between FAW and Ford will surely influence the interests of Mazda (China) and Changan Group. The sales profits of Mazda cars in the fast growing Chinese auto market are likely to be more controlled by FAW Mazda if the FAW-Ford deal takes effect.

Mazda Motor has attempted to coordinate the sales relationship between its three joint ventures in mainland China: Hainan Mazda, FAW Mazda, and Changan Mazda, and tried in vain to put all the Mazda sales in China into the network of FAW Mazda Motor Sales Co., but the effort to centralize its control of China's Mazda sales in FAW is still going on, despite an additional objection from Hainan Mazda.

The three Chinese JVs of Mazda produce more than car models of different segments, including sedans, SUVs, and MPVs. But their sales relation remains a big problem for Mazda Motor to solve, and now FAW has to win more control of those JVs by buying into Changan Ford Mazda.

Ford, Changan denies report of tie-up with FAW.

May 08, 2008 - Sources said recently that FAW Car and Ford have reached an initial agreement for FAW to buy into Changan Ford Mazda and that FAW is applying for the approval from the central government and expect the government's regulatory body to okay this deal. However, industry insiders of Ford and Changan Group all denied this report yesterday.

FAW has ever cooperated with Changan Ford Mazda. In March, 2006, the Mazda-3 vehicles, produced by Changan Ford Mazda, was sold by FAW Mazda Motor Sales Co.,which is the sole dealership of Ford's partner Mazda. Nevertheless, Mazda production suddenly stopped after selling for less than one month. Soon what came to light was that FAW and Changan Group were involved in quarrelling for sales rights of Mazda products. Finally FAW lost the sales rights in January this year.

"That is absolutely rumor,” said vice president of Ford China. “It is completely absurd and impossible for Ford join hands with FAW to compete with Changan in such a situation." There is no evidence of FAW Car buying into or acquiring the production line of Changan Ford Mazda."

Changan has no intention to cooperate with FAW, said Zhou Qin, director of Public Relations department of Changan Group.

FAW Jan-Jul sales up 21% to 978,432 units

August 25, 2008

Shanghai, August 25 (Gasgoo.com) China's auto-making giant FAW Group Corp sold a total of 978,432 vehicles from January to July, increasing 21% year on year (y/y) and completing 56.6% of this year's sales target. Of this total, 108,095 units were sold in July, said xinhuanet.com today.

FAW said that in the first seven months this year the group sold 774,639 sedans, up 23.9% y/y, gaining 22.6% market share, and it also sold 128,113 mid- to heavy-duty trucks, up 27% y/y, gaining 23.3% market share. All listed car-makers but FAW see H1 profit slide

September 02, 2008

Shanghai, September 2 (Gasgoo.com) All the listed auto-making companies in China have released their first-half profit reports. Except FAW Car (000800.SZ), all other automakers have seen a downward slide in their H1 profits and in their profit-making capabilities, said xinhuanet.com today.

"The raw material costs have posed huge pressure to the profit-making capabilities of automakers," said an auto industry analyst. "China's auto-makers endured rising pressure in the first half of 2008, and their mid-term profit rates have decreased considerably." In the first six months, the key automakers made total profits of 43.447 billion yuan ($6.36 billion), down 35.38% over one year earlier.

According to China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, there are three major reasons for the profit downturn: the first is the national macro-economic policy adjustment and the global economic depression, the second is a series of natural disasters including the late-January-early February snowstorms in southern China and the May 12 earthquake in Sichuan province, and the third reason is the huge rise in raw material costs and oil prices.

But FAW Car was an exception to the profit slide. Data released by FAW Car showed that the total profit of the company in the first half of the year reached 688 million yuan ($100.58 mln), up 231% over the same period of last year. The net profit also surged by 206% to 505 million yuan.

FAW said the high profit growth was prompted by its market growth both at home and abroad, improved marketing management and cost reduction. Maybe these methods can serve as textbook examples for other listed companies to follow in their profit pursuit.

Toyota to spend 1.5 bln yuan boosting China JV capacity

September 11, 2008

Shanghai, September 11 (Gasgoo.com) While scaling down its global sales goal for 2008 and 2009, Toyota Motor Corp. has increased its sales target over the two years and decided to invest 1.5 billion yuan ($220 million) to boost the capacity in one of its joint ventures in China, said sina.com.cn today.

Because of the shrinking U.S. auto market, Toyota, the largest Japanese carmaker, reduced its 2008 global sales goal to 9.5 million cars from 9.85 million, and decreased the 2009 goal to 9.7 million units from 10.4 million. By contrast, the company planned to sell more cars in China, aiming to sell 700,000 cars in the Chinese market this year and 900,000 cars next year.

To meet the increasing demand in China's auto market, Toyota has recently announced its plans to invest 1.5 billion yuan in the capacity expansion of the second plant of FAW Toyota joint venture in northeastern China to boost the facility's annual output to 150,000 vehicles from the current 100,000 units.

China is one of Toyota's fast growing markets and will be an important force to help the company get over hard times worldwide. With the global economy to continue depressing, Japanese carmakers including Toyota will probably speed up tapping the Chinese market, as part of their global strategies.

In the first half of this year, Toyota Motor sold 284,000 vehicles in China and overtook General Motors (GM) to become the second-largest foreign carmaker (by sales) in China after Volkswagen. In July, Toyota sold 41,000 more cars in China than GM.

FAW Bus to build production base in Changchun

September 23, 2008

Shanghai, September 23 (Gasgoo.com) The FAW Bus Co. Ltd., a bus subsidiary of FAW Group, plans to build a bus manufacturing base in Changchun, headquarters of FAW. Construction of the project will kick off in April 2009 and operation is scheduled for October next year, said xinhuanet.com today.

The techniques for the bus production in this base have been determined. Urban buses with a length of 12 meters or 18 meters will be manufactured in the Changchun facility of FAW Bus. The new manufacturing base will specialize in the production of 8-meter-long bus chassis to compete with the industry rivals in the 6- to 8-meter-long chassis product lineup and become a first-class chassis production base in China.

According to the company's current five-year plan, FAW Bus aims to sell 15,000 complete buses annually by 2013, with 3,000 units of them for export, and to gain a 5.76% market share. The company expects to become the fifth largest bus maker in China.

In addition to its urban buses, the company will also start producing its highway buses in 2009.

FAW Car estimates Q3 profit fell 5 pct

October 11, 2008
SHANGHAI, Oct 11 (Reuters) - FAW Car Co, a unit of one of China's three largest auto makers, First Automotive Works, estimated on Saturday that its net profit in the July-September quarter fell about 5 percent from a year earlier.

That would mark a major deterioration from the first half of this year, when FAW Car, which makes cars with Mazda Motor Corp, posted a 206 percent rise in net profit.

In the third quarter of last year, the company made a profit of 356.5 million yuan ($52.2 million).

FAW Car did not give a reason for the third-quarter profit drop. But a slowing economy has hit Chinese auto demand hard in recent months; country-wide passenger car sales shrank from a year earlier for a second month in a row in September.

The company is due to report full third-quarter earnings late this month.

Tianjin FAW to build own-brand car on 9G Corolla platform.

October 15, 2008 - Tianjin FAW said it will produce the company’s first A-level car based on Toyota’s ninth-generation Corolla platform, according to China Business Journal.

It will be the second time for Tianjin FAW to build its own-brand cars by technical transfer from Toyota following the Chinese auto maker introduced Xiali in its early years and built its V-series car -- Vizi, Vela and Vizhi (Weizhi) -- based on the Toyota NBC platform.

Toyota’s ninth-generation Corolla platform has been transferred to Tianjin FAW, which plans to build a relatively high-class own-brand car, according to a top executive from the Chinese carmaker.

He said that the model is a 4.7-meter-long A-level sedan, priced between 80,000 yuan ($11,695) and 90,000 yuan. The model will be put into production around 2010. But he declined to tell the technical transferring fee.

The executive claimed that Tianjin FAW will make its second innovation based on the bought technique, at least in the exterior design of the new model.

Chinese auto giant FAW reports record sales in '08

2009-01-15

CHANGCHUN -- China's major automaker First Automobile Works (FAW) Group said Thursday its sales volume and revenue both reached record highs in 2008.

The automaker said it sold more than 1.53 million vehicles last year, a 6.75 percent increase from 2007.

Sales revenue totaled a record high of 218.4 billion yuan (about US$32.12 billion), up 8.8 percent from the previous year.

Headquartered in Changchun, capital of northeast China's Jilin Province, FAW was founded in 1953. It now has 28 wholly owned subsidiaries and controlling interest in 18 partially-owned subsidiaries, according to a document posted on the company's website.

They include: FAW Jiefang Truck Co. Ltd.; FAW Bus and Coach Co. Ltd.; FAW Car Co. Ltd.; Tianjin FAW Xiali Automobile Co.Ltd.; Changchun FAW Sihuan Automobile Co. Ltd.; FAW-Volkswagen Automobile Co. Ltd.; and Tianjin FAW Toyota motor Co. Ltd..

FAW-Volkswagen Automobile Co. Ltd, a Sino-German sedan car maker, ranked first in the country for selling 499,000 cars last year.

Nationwide, Chinese automakers sold 9.38 million vehicles last year, posting a 6.7 percent rise in sales compared with the previous year. However, the increase was the lowest in 10 years, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) said Monday.

The growth rate was 21.84 percent in 2007.

CAAM figures included auto exports, but did not cover sales of imported cars on the domestic market.

The country's automakers rolled out a total of 9.34 million vehicles last year, up 5.21 percent from 2007.

FAW Group to raise R&D spending by 61% in '09

February 19, 2009

China auto giant FAW Group will increase its spending for research and development (R&D) by 61.45% to 4.23 billion yuan ($619 million) this year despite the financial crisis, xinhuanet.com reported today, citing FAW's president.

FAW Group president Xu Jianyi said that it will use the economic crisis "as an opportunity for structural adjustment and innovation" and will focus on the development of energy-saving and environment-friendly vehicles this year, as well as vehicles for China's vast rural areas.

In 2008, FAW spent 2.63 billion yuan in its R&D projects. The automaker sold more than 1.53 million motor vehicles last year, up 6.75% year-on-year, compared with the 23.2% growth of 2007. Its sales revenue for 2008 hit a record 218.4 billion yuan, up 8.8%. Its subsidiary FAW VW sold 499,000 sedans in 2008, atop China's sedan sales rankings of the year.

In its effort to develop low-emission clean vehicles of its own brands, FAW Group will focus on the R&D projects of several new models this year, including the luxury, high-end, medium-size and small-size models of its four platforms. The Jiefang truck platforms will be integrated and upgraded as well.

FAW's bus company is also developing the alternative-energy 12-meter-long buses for urban public transportation and long-distance passenger transportation. The rural areas will be another huge market for auto giant’s clean vehicles for farming and transportation.

FAW Group will launch several of its self-developed new vehicle models in 2009, such as the Besturn B50 and Hongqi HQE sedans, Xiali X121 and X123 economical sedans, L501 light vehicle, V70 and V90 mini-cars, and 12-meter-long buses.

FAW cars to carry new logo design

FAW Group's own made Besturn B70 sedan, which hit the market yesterday, noticeably does not carry the manufacturer's '1' badge, but rather its new eagle logo. When asked about the issue, sources within FAW confirmed that with the B70, it will be exclusively using the new logo on all models, with the exception of its Hongqi luxury cars.

The news represents a dramatic shift for FAW's brand strategy, which was previously split between many names, including the Tianjin FAW Xiali N3 and others. Now all brands will be unified under one badge. Sources went on to say that the brand would distinguish between its passenger and commercial vehicles by fitting different types with variants of the eagle badge.
