On the other hand, this car looks like Toyota Crown.

Well, as long as Hongqi signed a license with Toyota, that's fine. If not....

production of the car has already started. They'll go on sale in June.

According to CAIN (China Auto Information) Hongqi HQ3 goes for sale in November 16.

"Sources with FAW Red Flag said that Red Flag HQ3 would go on sale on this November 16 when the prices of two series would be released. FAW Red Flag has invested a lot to build its Red Flag production line of 50-year history into a Red Flag HQ3 base with an annual output capacity of 13,000 units. Two series of 4.3L and 3.0L will be manufactured on this line.

The original model of Red Flag HQ3 is majesta on Toyota top-class platform. It has an excellent dynamic feature, creature comfort, impressive designs as well as nice quality. HQ3 will find its place in the administrative car and protocol car market."

I hope all of you do not put more care on this car since it is originated from Japapese majesta. I feel shamed and it was also criticed by many netzen in China. We can expect more good news from Chery, Geely, SAIC and Changan (Great wall seems still in the stage of copying, not heard of their long term development plan)

Actually FAW have purchased the rights/licence to produce this model in FAW factory ;)

FYI FAW also have a JV with a Toyota & VW, both of these companies assist the FAW Group where possible ;)

if u take Audi, vw, Skoda and Seat, they are identical cars underneath, but they looks very different and have their own nationality characters. If Faw have a joint venture with toyota then that doesnt give faw to build a copy of the crown original, the chinese designers could have played a role in giving the car a more Chinese identity instead of looking like the way it does.

OK. Before we proceed w/bashing this car to death, maybe we should understand what the above quote says. FAW has been given the right to produce the Japanese equivalent of this model by its joint-venture partner, TOYOTA. This means that FAW can produce, under license, an exact copy of the Crown Majesta, is it?, i'm not too familiar w/ this model, w/out Toyota going bonkers & suing the pants off them, w/ch they won't do anyway since FAW is making tons of money for them. This arrangement exemplifies a crucial condition in any joint-venture arrangement between a chinese company making cars, & its foreign partner. In any JV, the chinese partner is allowed to manufacture an exact copy of any outdated design of its JV partner,w/its permission of course, under its own chinese brand, & embellish its design to its taste. the logic behind this is to accelerate the technology transfer from the foreign JV partner to the chinese counterpart. If anything, FAW is guilty of a lack of imagination in not altering the original design so that it's antecedent is not so obvious. So, its not a knock-off, its a licensed product w/a different badge, or to put it bluntly, a licensed copy.

why cant chinese companies use their own desing flair in designs of Japanese cars built under license copy. Imagine the Japanese are laughing, they get paid by the chinese for JV licenses, and when the chinese vehicle looks japan knock off, the ridicule takes place on the chinese face. Japan must be laughing behind the chinese back with thier japanese pocket full of $$ from china:confused: :(

japanese people very clever, treat china like a small baby, give it chocolate to keep happy/well behaved

ya gotta slow down gsj! in this case, you're letting your fingers get ahead of your thoughts. what's this about a "desing flair"? we're not a fashion forum, we're a car forum, so dressing up doesn't make an impact here.

Honestly I do not like this car at all. This is just an existing japanese car being made in China for fitting into the market. This kind of minor duty should let FAW Toyota do it. HongQi should be focusing on developing Chinese Style and Highest-End Chinese Limo/Sedan.

I felt shamed about this car. I cannot even finish watching this commercial on youtube. It really embarrassed me. Why not FAW stop taking advantage of Chinese people? They cheated so long. They wasted the hard earned Chinese people tax money.
FAW, please make some real Chinese car.

Gentlemen, there is no Chinese engineering here. The HQ3 was designed by Toyota in Japan for FAW Group's FAW Car Co. division, long long for its Hongqi brand automobiles. In fact, all the early HQ3's were assembled in Japan and shipped over to China. Toyota based the car on the Toyota Crown Majesta. The chassis and interior are identical. It was a political gesture towards FAW. Toyota has joint venture plants with FAW Group in Changchun, Tianjin, and Chengdu, producing the Corolla, Vios, Prius, Landcruiser, Coaster, Mark X (Reiz), and engines. Toyota knew that FAW very badly wanted and needed a next generation Hongqi, as we all know the Audi-based car has become obsolete. The real irony here is that as much as Chinese people like to complain about hatiing the Japanese, as in their mind Japan has never correctly apologized for its WWII war atrocities, here is the country's flagship name car Hongqi, originally created for China's elite, being nothing less than a Japanese designed and built car.

FAW Car cuts price of luxury HQ3 sedans hugely.

October 9, 2008 - FAW Car Co has announced that it will cut the price of its luxury Hongqi (Red Flag) brand HQ3 sedans by 50,000 yuan ($7,340) - 167,000 yuan as a move to boost sales, Chinese auto website cheshi.com reported.

The company has changed the model’s Chinese name from Hongqi HQ3 to Shengshi (“Days of Prosperity”) and said that in the future the car will target private car segment instead of high end business and government segments, according to the report, citing sources from the company.

The HQ3 price slash this time is of the largest scale the Chinese-built cars ever had. The price of the government-use models has decreased from 299,800 yuan to 249,800 yuan, the commemorative model from 399,800 yuan to 349,800 yuan, and the premium model from 566,800 yuan to 399,800 yuan.

Experts say that for most Chinese people the "Red Flag" car is a glorious image "vehicle" for government officials for historical reasons. It has become symbols of political power and feature status-confirming attributes, so citizens feel it just not fit for them to buy such a car.

Sales of Hongqi cars continue to dwindle in the first half of this year, with only 788 units sold, all from inventories. Earlier the company decided to integrate of Hongqi's sales network into the Besturn's in an effort to save cost.

In August FAW Car is talking about plans to develop a new lineup of its own-brand models for sales growth by partnering with Austrian auto design firm Magna Steyr, who will be engaged in designing the B-Class, D-Class, E-Class HQ sedans and other HQ vehicle models.

So, what is MSRP of this car? About $28,000 USD?

I do read some Chinese characters and above picture says something about fuel grade for engine type.

Korea had Mitsubishi Debonair made in Korea under Hyundai license as Grandeur back in 1995 as I recall, since I had this car. In Japan, this car were popular for taxi use. In Korea, it was middle class and upper buyer to owned.

Despite where its made, a company need to start somewhere and build up and I think FAW had good start.

I do wonder what FAW North Korean office do? Do they have assembly line in N. Korea?

Can I open an office in South Korea for FAW? FAW open and I sell?

How about export to Korea (South)?
