Toyota starts building 2nd Guangzhou plant
(Bloomberg)

Toyota Motor Corp., Japan's largest automaker, began building a second plant in Guangzhou, South China's Guangdong Province today to meet rising demand in the world's second-largest vehicle market.

The new plant will make Camry sedans and Yaris compacts, Liang Jing, an official in the management department of Toyota's venture in Guangzhou, said by phone today. The factory will take more than a year to build, she added.

Work on the factory, Toyota's seventh in China, follows the opening of its third plant in the northern city of Tianjin last month. The company aims to boost sales in the country by a third this year and to grab a 10 percent share of the Chinese car market by 2010.

"Toyota is on track to become the biggest automaker in China within three to five years," said Yale Zhang, a director at CSM Asia Corp., which advises carmakers in China. "The automaker doesn't have any obvious weak points in its competition with other rivals in China."

Guangzhou Toyota Motor Co., Toyota's venture with Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., started making cars last year with a designed annual production capacity of 200,000. The venture, which began operating two shifts in October, aims to make 150,000 Camry sedans this year, Liang said.

The new plant will boost Toyota's total capacity in Guangzhou to 500,000 units a year, China Business News reported today, citing an unidentified official at the venture.

Toyota's total production capacity in China is about 620,000 units, Yang Hongjian, the carmaker's Beijing-based spokeswoman, said by phone today.

The automaker, based in Toyota City, Japan, had a 6.5 percent share of China's car market last year. It nearly doubled its sales in the country to 281,160 in 2006 from a year earlier, according to CSM's Zhang.

China's overall vehicle market grew 25 percent to 7.22 million last year, as the country surpassed Japan as the world's second-largest auto market behind the U.S.

Government OKs Toyota's second plant in Guangzhou.

The National Development and Reform Commission, China's top economic planning and regulatory body, has recently approved Toyota's second plant project in Guangzhou, Chinese newspaper Beijing News reported today.

"Guangzhou Toyota has a regular capacity of 200,000 vehicles per annum, and we can raise that capacity to 240,000 units by adding more shifts, but that's the ceiling capacity for us," said Ge Yuanzhe, general manager of Guangzhou Toyota.

Toyota's hot-selling compact sedan Yaris, which is being displayed at Guangzhou Auto Show, will also be locally produced in Guangzhou plant by the middle of next year.

To increase the output of its popular model Toyota Camry and accommodate the newly-introduced Yaris, Guangzhou Honda has to open a second plant. "We are planning to open the second plant as our output capacity can no longer meet market demands," Ge said.

The second plant will start production in the third quarter next year. Guangzhou Toyota will a total capacity of half a million per annum after the completion of its second plant in Guangzhou, according to Chinese media report.

Guangzhou Toyota was established in September 2004, with an initial output capacity of 200,000 vehicles per annum.

Separately, Toyota Motor China president Isogai Masashi said at the 5th International Automobile Exhibition in Guangzhou that the company aimed to sell 700,000 vehicles in China next year, up 46 percent from this year. The company also vowed to grab 10 percent of Chinese auto market by 2010.

Guangzhou Toyota sold 136,910 Camry vehicles in the first ten months, which represents a stunning increase of 316.4 percent from one year earlier.

Guangzhou Toyota to introduce hybrid cars.

May 13, 2008 - As Toyota’s latest plant after established three years ago, Guangzhou Toyota Motor has introduced two of three Toyota global strategic models. Guangzhou Toyota will bring hybrid cars to the domestic market with Camry as the best platform, the joint venture said last week.

When Guangzhou Toyota is considering introducing hybrid cars, China’s market demand should be looked into and the consumers’ concept will be guided, said vice general manager of Guangzhou Toyota. “The current mass-produced cars could be mounted with the hybrid technology to raise their sales. I believe this is a good strategy to introduce hybrid cars to China with Camry as the platform.”

Since Guangzhou Honda has launched 3.5L Yaris now, people have asked whether high-emission Camry will come out to enter C-class vehicle market or not. “That’s not necessary now. But it is quite possible that Camry models are to be added as sales improve and the consumer base expands. Besides, Toyota can also put out an all-new model to meet the market demand because of its richer line-up of products than Honda,” said Feng Xingya, vice general manager of Guangzhou Toyota.

The number of Guangzhou Toyota dealerships in Beijing has now increased to 9 from 7, and will reach 11 by the end of this year.
