View Full Version : FAW M8O / Daihatsu Xenia
I found a new MPV model which is marketed through FAW dealers; it's called a Daihatsu Xenia. Is this model manufactured in China or is it just an import ?
Here is the website:

I know that Toyota and Daihatsu produce this model in Indonesia and Malaysia for South-East Asia markets under names Daihatsu Xenia and Toyota Avanza:

In the present year Daihatsu brand was introduced to Chinese market. Their first car will be Xenia, which was presented as a concept car D-01 some year ago:

This year, a production version was shown. It bears the same name as ASEAN version but it lightly differs (different grill, rear lights,...) from it. I don't know if the car is already being produced in China but according to Autoblog some Daihatsu models will be produced by FAW.

Hi!
FAW Jilin produces this model, which is esentially the same as the Xenia in Indonesia.
My question is: Will FAW Jilin carry on producing its self-designed minibuses?
Thanks

Toyota doesn't exert as much influence over Daihatsu as I had previously thought (I realize they only own 51%). When I sat inside this car at an FAW-Jilin dealer, I was very disappointed with the quality of the instrument panel controls. It felt very cheap. Hard to believe it is marketed elsewhere as a Toyota. And they are pricing this car too high for the China market, much more than in Indonesia. It will fail in China because of the 70,000 to 100,000rmb price. I heard it sells for the equivalent of 50,000rmb in Indonesia. A person can get a great quality Chang'an van for 45,000 to 55,000rmb.

Ive seen it, didnt think it was that shabby.
Theres a big difference between a 50k Chang'an Mian Bao Che and the Xenia, and an ever bigger perceived social status between the drivers of the two different vehicles.

First, I don't think the Xenia will be successful in China because the price up to 98,000rmb is too high for the Chinese market. Also, this car is no different then the Mitsubishi Freeca (they are practically identical), which has been a sales failure in China. People are not going to buy this car for status. They would much rather buy a base Jetta for 80,000rmb, which they perceive as a much better car. And honestly, for China's bad roads, the rugged A2 Jetta probably is a better bet.
I'm not saying the Xenia's quality is shabby, like a Geely. But the car's design quality is not like most Toyota products. It is a 50,000rmb car. If they sold it for that, they might have some success. Daihatsu does not have good marketing. They were a disaster in the US market. They just gave up and pulled out of the growing Vietnam market (where Toyota and everyone else is doing well).

100k for a car in China is peanuts, a large percentage of white collar families in eastern China can easily afford a 100k car.
Which city are you in? Lanzhou?

I live in Changchun. I have worked in China 7 years. With all due respect, the vast majority of Chinese are still using public transportation, or riding a bicycle, scooter or motorcycle. Yes, the roads are clogged with cars, but China has a hug population, of which only a small percentage are private car owners. For the majority of Chinese people, buying a new Jetta for 80,000-97,000rmb is a major event. Also, the total road fees, insurance and other matters must be considered. The price of gas here rivals the US, but people here don't make US salaries.

Before Daihatsu was introduced as independent brand in China, thier product - small SUV Terios - was sold through FAW Toyota dealers under the name Dario Terios. Though sold as Toyota, the car bore Daihatsu badge.

Going back even further, Daihatsu came into China long before its parent Toyota did. It was 1984 when Daihatsu gave Tianjin Auto Industrial a license to build the Daihatsu Charade that would become the Xiali of taxicab fame. A bit later Geelys Li Shufu envisioned it with a Mercedes type grille and so he created the Haoqing sedan.
But now Daihatsu is just a shadow of its early Chinese beginnings.

Daihatsu is preparing offroad version of Xenia, which it seems will very resemble the D-01 concept:

We already published a news that Daihatsu will start selling vehicles in China under FAW's brand:
http://www.chinacarforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7016&highlight=daihatsu
As Xenia is so far only car produced by Daihatsu in PRC it's no suprise this will be the first Japanese car to get new logo and perhaps new name.

Isn't the Daihatsu Xenia simply a rebadged Toyota Innova which is made in China by FAW?
martin_krpan
11-06-2009, 12:02 AM
Xenia is a rebadged Toyota Avanza (pictures published on page 1).
Toyota Innova is larger and is not produced in China. It was developed to be affordable people carrier for South-East Asian nations.

I think it is not "M8O" (m8o), it is "M80" (M eight zero).
