On the world premiere of the Magotan: The sedan specially tailored to the Chinese market is a popular car known around the world as the Passat. Ive only seen one on the road and it seems to have an empowering 'presence' akin to the Chrysler 300c.

Most Chinese cars are smaller, European style, of course there is the usual huge escalade or navigator, as well as a few Hummer H2's/3's but this Magotan is pretty big by Chinese road standards.

New VW set to stir market

SALES leaders in China's mid-to-high-end car market are cutting sticker prices to defend their market positions in advance of the launch of Volkswagen's highly anticipated Magotan sedan.

Toyota's Chinese venture has expanded production capacity for its popular Camry, aiming to shorten customer waiting times before the Magotan hits the market in October.

The Camry, whose prices start at 197,800 yuan (US$26,026), was the top seller in the profitable mid-to-high sector for more than six months, with monthly sales of more than 12,000 units.

The market price for Shanghai Volkswagen's Passat Lingyu, 183,800 yuan, has been cut by as much as 23,000 yuan to compete with the Magotan, which is part of Passat's worldwide lineup.

The market reshuffle came after FAW-VW, Volkswagen AG's venture with First Automotive Group, debuted the long-awaited Magotan on the Great Wall on Wednesday night. The car, equipped with a 1.8-liter or 2-liter engine, will sell for between 192,800 yuan and 249,800 yuan.

Some analysts expect the FAW-VW's Magotan to challenge Camry's leading position and slow down the sales of the previous generation of Passats sold by Shanghai VW.

"The Magotan should be more attractive to individual buyers, leaving the Lingyu more suitable for business use," said Zhong Shi, an independent analyst. "As a more localized product, the Lingyu could survive through its pricing strategy."

Volkswagen AG, the biggest overseas carmaker in China, held a 19 percent share of the country's car market in the first half after boosting sales by a quarter to 431,369.

FAW-VW hit by double-clutch transmission shortage.

March 31, 2008, 2008 - FAW-Volkswagen Automotive Company, the joint venture between China’s First Automobile Works (FAW) Group and Volkswagen (VW), cannot raise the output of 1.8T Magotans with six-speed dual clutch automated-manual transmissions due to limited supply of these dual-clutch transmissions, which is restricting sales of its Magotan range, reported SinoCast China Business Daily News recently.

The automaker, which fits the transmission to the 1.8T variants of the model, has been receiving the components from the Japanese-based Aisin AW Company, but demand has exceeded supply. According to dealers, the model with this transmission accounts for around 75% of Magotan sales.

The Magotan continues to be hit by shortages of this transmission, with a similar report having surfaced late last year, but problems with the components’ quality had been the issue then. The Magotan has also suffered from lower-than-expected sales as it appears that the government officials at whom the vehicle was aimed have not taken to it in as great a number as expected.

The JV will be hoping that the supply restrictions are eased later on this year, while it will also hope that an additional engine variant will spark further interest in the market.

Magotan to become first China-made car with DSG transmission,

June 4, 2008 - The first batch of China-made Magotan cars equipped with the DSG (direct shift gearbox) transmission will roll off the production line at the end of this year, and Magotan will become the first China-made car model to use the DSG transmission.

The DSG transmission will complete its trial run by the end of 2008 and its mass-production is expected to start in early 2009. All the locally made Sagitar and Magotan models of FAW VW will be equipped by the DSG transmissions to replace the current 6-speed automatic / manual transmission.

Like the manual transmission, the DSG transmission conveys the power from the engine to the gearbox by using the clutch, and thus it is more likely to achieve energy efficiency than the conventional hydrodynamic coupling convey. This will greatly help the vehicles equipped with it reduce the fuel consumption.

The Chinese-made Magotan powered by the TSI engine has helped customers realize the technological achievements made by Volkswagen in the development of auto engines. In the near future, we will first feel the driving pleasure brought by the state-of-the-art transmission technology.

More importantly, Chinese customers will benefit from the energy-economy vehicle driven by the TSI+DSG power-train.

Extended VW Magotan spotted out testing

The month prior to any auto show is always a super busy one, and this month is no different. The Guangzhou Auto Show is practically upon us and will see a number of new cars being launched, one of which is the below VW Passat, aka the Magotan in China.

VW have two JV’s in China, one with FAW and one with SAIC. SAIC produce the facelift VW Passat, whilst FAW produce the European Passat which is known as the Magotan in China. The Magotan has been selling at a steady rate of around 5000 vehicles per month, which is somewhat below the expected rate of 8000 vehicles, however sales in August and September exceeded the average.

In an effort to boost sales, FAW are reportedly working with VW to llengthen the Magotan platform to give it more leg room in the rear. FAW have stretched the Magotan by an impress 100mm, giving it a total length of 2809mm, which is 6mm longer than the SAIC-VW built Passat (take that!) and also makes the new Magotan longer than the Skoda Superb.

In addition to making the Magotan longer, they are also working on making it cheaper to buy by putting in a 1.4TSI engine which will push it into a lower sales tax bracket.

FAW-Volkswagen is trying to stretch the length of its Magotan wheelbase to help it become branded as a medium-sized car.
A source working for FAW-Volkswagen says that the new wheelbase will be 2,809mm, the longest among all the Volkswagen vehicles made in China.

Stretched Passat/Magotan spotted out

Lengthened cars are nothing new to the automotive world, but they are a relatively common phenoninem on the People’s Republic of China. Don’t think your mark one Chery Fulwin had enough space in the back? Simple: Order the stretched version. Think your Citroen Elysee is too cramped in the back? Simple: Order the stretched one. Wondering why Audi A4 sales are so good in China? Simple: the stretched one outsells the BMW 3-Series and Merc C-class combined. A love of legroom in the back has been the savior of many car companies in China, except VW don’t really need a savior, what they need is model diversification, and that’s where the Magotan comes in.

The Magotan, or rather Passat in Europe, is aimed at mid level managers and government officials. Government officials often get drivers as standard, and they get a budget every few years for car purchases, usually they are not allowed to go over 250,000rmb at mid level positions which doesn’t leave a great deal of models to choose from if they want to be chauffered to KTV’s in style. If you’re higher up, then you get around 350,000rmb which will buy you much more of a car. So the stretched Magotan is coming in as the affordable stretched car for the mid level city hall or junior minister who wants to get about town with the aid of his driver.

The stretched version is powered by the 1.8TSI engine and a six speed gearbox, which should keep its price to around 250,000rmb and thus inline with government procedure on buying cars. The wheelbase has been stretched from 2709mm to an impressive 2830mm, most of which has been given to rear passengers leg space.
