So Foton is another Chinese company which had decided to improve its portfolio and move away from SUV territory. Good for them.

I tried to find an angle where the car looked good from. When I turned away from the computer and could not see it, then I was happy that was a good angle. This model should be in the running for worst design of the year.

Readers of Slovenian car forum claim, that this Foton is based on Citroen Berlingo, even chassis is supposedly the same.

Is this information correct?

Beiqi Foton debuts its first car.

April 14, 2008 - Beiqi Foton's first car model, the MP-X Midi, debuted in China yesterday. The automaker said the car, with 1.3-liter and 1.6-liter versions, will be available to customers as early as this June.

Initial production capacity is a planned 50,000 units per year. The 1.6-liter diesel version is still under research and may be rolled out next year along with the 1.5-liter gasoline version, according to the China Business News.

Wu Xuebin, Beiqi Foton's deputy general manager and the head of Beiqi Foton's automotive engineering institute, said the MP-X Midi, featuring roomy interior space and extra carrying capacity, is for both commercial and domestic usage.

Nearly one million equivalent models to the MP-X Midi are sold in Europe annually, Wu added.

Ye Ziqing, assistant to the general manager of Beiqi Foton, said that successive Foton car models will mainly target medium- and high-end car users.

In addition, Foton also plans to add a car production line with annual output capacity of 300,000 cars and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) to its plant in Nanhai district of Foshan City, Guangzhou Province. Construction is expected to be complete in one or two years.

Beiqi Foton, which primarily produces commercial vehicles, sold 125,000 vehicles in the first quarter of this year, an increase of 28.1 percent year on year. A record 65,000 units were sold in March alone, accounting for half of the domestic commercial vehicle market.

Is there anything new about this car, any official confirmation on which platform it is based?

Nevertheless, I'm 99% sure this is Berlingo hiding underhood:

-apart from different front and rear panels almost identical mid section, including windscreen
-from the pictures seen the chassis is the same as well, even the exhaust is placed on exactly the same place
-interior has a different design, but the basic layout is the same, the seats are almost identical
-door and door mountings - identical

And so on and so on. Reminds me very much of that R Scenic and Zafira-based chinese minivans.

Hello Joie, there is no relation between Foton and Peugeot-Citroën. I think you are pretty right when you say that the Berlingo/Partner is the basis of this design, but officially any similarity is coincidental.....

Pure Electric Foton Midi to launch in 2010.

China's biggest commercial-vehicle maker Beiqi Foton said its Midi electric vehicle will go on sale by the end of this year, Beijing Times News reported.

The manufacturing cost of Midi electric vehicle is 40,000 yuan ($5,860) to 60,000 yuan higher than that of the Midi petrol version, which has been under trial sale at 60,000 yuan to 90,000 yuan.

The Midi electric vehicle is powered by li-ion battery stack and could be charged full within four to five hours on ordinary household socket-outlets. The model can run 100 km to 150 km at one charge.

The li-ion battery stack equipped on Midi electric car was sourced from battery makers and Foton mastered the battery controller technology.

Foton now is cooperating with electric manufacturers from home and abroad in order to equip the electric technology on much smaller vehicles than Midi. The company said it would not use this technology in commercial vehicles.

The car is based on the Citroen Berlingo.

Recently purchased a Foton Midi with the Mitsubishi 1.6, despite some strange noises coming the drive train and sticky accelerator pedal , the car is very pleasurable to drive, at high speeds tends to swim ,went to 15 inches alloy wells with some decent tires (205/60R15) and now holds track. Tried to find some info on the Mitsubishi engine (4G 18S) but nothing comes up on the Internet , is there any one able to enlighten me about the origin of this engine? Will appreciate any information.
