Nice looking cars but,
"GM doesn't expect to realize mass scale production of Opel in China," said Liu Yuehai, Shanghai GM's marketing director, reports gasgoo.com on October 23. This appears to translate: no China production for the time being.

we get these opel cars as Vauxhall in the UK. The police use them with Diesel engines, and quality and handling is not good in these cars. GM also owns Daewoo now and badge daewoo cars and Chevrolet

Opel SUV Antara to hit Chinese market next March:

German automaker Opel will introduce a SUV model Antara to Chinese market next march, Chendu-based West China Metroplis Daily News reported today.

Antara will be priced at in a range of 300,000 yuan to 400,000 yuan in Chinese market and will compete with Mitubishi Outlander, Toyota RAV4, Kia Sportage, Chervolet Captiva and Honda CRV, the report said.

The model, which made its first show in Paris last year, is a four wheel drive SUV built on the same platform with Chervolet Captiva.

The vehicle is powered by 2.4 Liter engine with a maximum output of 140 horsepowers or a 3.2 Liter V6 engine with the maximum output of 227 horse-powers.

Captiva, Chervolet's best selling compact SUV has arrived in Chinese market early this month, and the imported U.S.-made SUV is priced in a range between 240,000 yuan ($31,975) and 280,000 yuan ($37,303) in Chinese market.

Astra GTC wins “Most Fashionable Vehicle” award.

Rüsselsheim/Beijing, 28.1.2008 - The Opel Astra GTC with panorama windshield has been recognized as the most fashionable trendsetter among imported vehicles 2007 in China. The “Most Fashionable Vehicle” award was presented by the Chinese Trading Center for Automobile Imports and Sina.com, the largest Chinese-language infotainment web portal. The real eye-catcher was the GTC’s innovative XXL windshield: it extends back into the B-pillar and offers occupants a unique view. The jury of economic and media experts, as well as Internet users, evaluated the dynamic three-door Astra model in a total of ten categories against criteria such as performance, safety, technological innovation, brand image and styling.

Besides the Astra GTC, which has been sold in China since last summer, the five-door Astra, Astra TwinTop, Zafira and Vectra are also available in the country. The expanding network of Opel dealerships in China – there are currently 40 in total – sold 3700 vehicles last year.

The panorama windshield comes as standard in the top-of-the-line Astra GTC Cosmo variant in Germany. The around 1.8 square meter glass panel extends from the end of the hood, over the front occupants’ heads to the middle of the roof. Unlike contemporary glass roof designs, there is no crossbeam to obstruct the view, enabling driver, front and rear passengers to enjoy an unrestricted view similar to that in the cockpit of a sport airplane. Thanks to the additional foil in the 5.5 mm-thick laminated safety glass, the windshield cannot splinter, even in the event of a serious accident. The foil used in the lightly green-tinted Solar Protect Glass panorama windshield also serves as a heat-insolating layer. There is also a shading system, for which a patent has been applied: the steplessly adjustable shades disappear under the rear roof section when in open mode.

Opel to launch Flextreme Concept and Astra notchback.

April 10 (Gasgoo.com) Opel, a brand of GM, will bring two vehicle models as its Asian premier at this Beijing international auto show: the Opel Flextreme concept model and Opel Astra notchback edition.

Opel Flextreme concept

The Flextreme body's key characteristics highlight the new elements of Opel design language: more sculpted surfacing molding, clear style elements such as narrow, boomerang-shaped lights and sloping swage line in the side graphics. The 4,796mm long Flextreme was also designed following the motto of technological efficiency: vehicle weight and aerodynamics are optimized by using sophisticated materials and simulation technology.

The bottom edge of the windshield has been pulled far forward, so the hood with its characteristic crease is very short. The integrated power socket in the cowl panel allows the car to be charged at any mains supply. A look at the front of the car quickly reveals that the front grill and rims are covered by lightweight transparent trim, which is made from polycarbonate to improve aerodynamics while maintaining visual aesthetics. The same is true for the special light alloy wheels. Their look remains unchanged, yet disruptive air turbulence is avoided.

In keeping with the vehicle's extraordinary features, access to the FlexLoad luggage compartment is through two butterfly rear tailgate doors that individually swing open upwards along the central axis of the vehicle. The advantage is that the Flextreme's trunk is accessible from the side when the car is parked tightly against a wall or another vehicle. Another key Flextreme innovation is the trademarked FlexDoors driver and passenger doors: while the front doors open in the conventional manner, the rear doors are rear-hinged. And as there is no center roof pillar (B-pillar), opening both doors on one side creates a large opening for easy entry.

Opel's Flextreme concept car boasts the body of a dynamic monocab, as well as the completely new environmentally friendly E-Flex electric propulsion concept and a host of innovative details. In contrast to conventional vehicles and hybrids, GM's E-Flex system uses an electric motor, powered by a lithium-ion battery, to propel the Opel Flextreme concept for up to 55 km of electric-drive-only range without emitting any waste gas. A 1.3 turbo-diesel onboard engine generates additional electricity to replenish the battery and extend the vehicle's driving range.

Opel Astra notchback

Observed from the front, the Opel Astra notchback followed the design style of the previous hatchback with symbolic front grill, integrated the moped black head lamp as well as the integral bumper. The biggest difference lies at the boot added by Opel Astra notchback. However, seen from the rear part design of Opel Astra notchback, Opel giant Vectra's figure can be recognized.

In the dynamic system, the Opel Astra notchback is powered by a 1.6-liter gasoline and 16-valve engine, to provide horsepower at maximum 86kw. In addition, the premier top model going on the market this time will be equipped with a 1.8-liter gasoline Ecotec engine, with the maximum horsepower at 104kw. Moreover, all vehicles of this series will be equipped with standard front-seat double airbags and the anti-lock braking system (ABS).

Opel Antara SUV to sell in China for 320,000 yuan.

May 30, 2008 - Opel has introduced Astra and Vectra models in China. An Opel SUV model sharing the same platform with Chevrolet Captiva will also be sold in the Chinese market soon, according to an Opel 4S store in Beijing.

A salesperson of an Opel 4S store said that the new Opel model is expected to enter their showroom in October this year. Now the store has received orders for the car with a deposit of 10,000 yuan ($1,438). The 2.4L and 3.2L models will be available initially when the new Opel goes on sale. The selling price is set between 320,000 yuan and 360,000 yuan. The Antara lineup is either powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder 103kw engine or by a 3.2L V6 engine, producing up to 167kw.

The production version of the Antara model first made its appearance at the 2006 Paris auto show. This five-seat SUV has aroused wide interest since it came out. It measures 4575mm in length, 1850mm in width and 1704mm in height. A mid-sized SUV supported by its 2707mm wheelbase, the Antara provides a roomy space.

Chevrolet Captiva now is a good seller in China market, which indicates that there is still large growth in the mid- and luxury-SUV market in China. The upcoming Opel SUV, superior to Chevrolet Captiva, is worth expecting.

October 23, 2008 - German automaker Opel introduced its SUV model Antara to the Chinese market today, reported Beijing News. This Opel Antara SUV is the 2.4L AMT compact model, priced at 325,000 yuan ($47,600) and now is available in 35 Opel dealerships across China.

The model is a four-wheel drive SUV built on the same platform with Chervolet Captiva, and powered by a 2.4L Ecotec engine with a maximum output of 140 horsepower or a 3.2L V6 engine with the maximum output of 227 horsepower. The Opel Antara is expected to compete with Mitubishi Outlander, Toyota RAV4, Kia Sportage, Chervolet Captiva and Honda CRV now sold in China.

With its intelligent traction Itcc, this Opel SUV features an electronically controlled electro-hydraulic differential which ensures optimal torque distribution between the front and rear axles in all situations. The car is 4,57 meters long, that is more or less the same measure of a mid-size sedan.

But at the same time the five-door Opel SUV is quite like a Chevrolet Captiva. As Chervolet's best selling compact SUV, Captiva arrived in China last year, and the imported U.S.-made SUV is priced between 240,000 yuan and 280,000 yuan in the Chinese market, according to industry sources.

The Opel Antara SUV is produced in South Korea by GM Daewoo, but sold under the Opel brand. In the UK, the car is sold as the Vauxhall Antara. In Australia and New Zealand the car is known as the Holden Captiva MaXX, and in North America as the Saturn Vue. In the Middle East, the vehicle is sold as the GMC Terrain.

General Motors is loosing market share in China, this is bad news considering that China is the General's only hope for some good news. GM needs those sales up and tries another Opel.

http://www.thetycho.com/news/corrrrrsa/opel_corsa_1.jpg

The Corsa will problably use the Buick name, just as the rebadged Opel Insignia/Buick Regal. GM can surely use an entry model for the Buick brand, today's entry is a rebadged Daewoo called Excelle which loses against the cheap local Chinese brands. GM used to sell the Corsa in China before as the Buick Sail, that was not very succesfull, especially the estate-variant sold practically zero. The Sail was cancelled quietly two years ago.

http://www.thetycho.com/news/corrrrrsa/opel_corsa_2.jpg

But the Insignia/Regal seems to start very well so GM wants more and might try it again with the Corsa. Might, because this car still has Opel badges which problably means it is imported from Germany for testing in China, this to check how much the car needs to be adjusted for Chinese road conditions.

GM might consider to sell the Corsa as an import Opel, just as they do now with the Astra. I don't think they will. The imported Astra is far too expensive and even though I have seen a few they don't fly off the shelf. So how long will it take GM to adjust the Corsa, rebadge it and build a line? At least 9 months, GM might be dead by that time, but a newly independend Opel might pick up the Chinese Opel pieces, after re-rebadging off course, that is.

http://www.thetycho.com/news/corrrrrsa/opel_corsa_3.jpg

That piece of paper behind the Corsa's window is a so called test card, allowing a manufacturer to drive around with a car for testing purposes.

Opel Antara sells better then any other model ever.
The Opel Antara is sold out 99% of the time since the chinese customers realized that the lower versions of the Chevrolet Captiva on the market can not keep up with the flagship model of Opel for the chinese market.
Local Dealer are extremly frustrated of getting no support from the ( still ) american mother company GM.
Models like the Opel Astra & Opel Astra Twintop slowly starting to sell better in China.
The basic Opel Astra has the major problem in China of having only 2 instead of four doors like the chinese expect from a hatchback.
Customers have to wait for an Opel Antara up to 6 month and they are willing to do so instead of buying the cheaper and quality 1 level down Chevrolet Captiva.
But the Chevrolet Captiva is still very popular. The chinese just love all kinds of SUV's.

I hope so too but
still gonna depend on the deal that GM is trying to fix these days - even i do hope that BAIC gets a chance and grows together with Opel - it seems right now the other bidders are one step ahead
And GM seems to be a lil bit scared of Opel entering the chinese market big time because also the chinese customers would realize soon that the rebadged Buicks and Chevrolets dont stand a chance against the original higher quality Opel products.
