The Toyota Yaris was originally made by First Automobile works in the cold tundra of North Eastern China, but sails were a flop against other super minis like the Honda Fit/Jazz (which is still dominating small car sales nearly two years on)

The new Toyota Yaris is to be made by Guangzhou Motor corp who also have a joint venture with Toyota. The new Yaris is supposed to be much safer than its predecessor, and recieved 35 points in the NCAP Safety Tests. The new Yaris will be available next year with either a 1.3 or a 1.5l motor.

Martin I think you are referring to the pre (FAW-Toyota joint venture) days when Yaris-based vehicles were beginning to be produced a bit south of the tundra in the port city of Tianjin. At the time, around late 2000, Toyota had teemed up with its Daihatsu subsidiary's partner, Tianjin Auto Industrial Co.,Ltd. which was the original producer of the Xiali brand.
Not long after, FAW seeing an opportunity, came along and swallowed up that operation.

Boy the names of this Toyota model surely is confusing. I guess the name in Europe was Yaris, in the U.S. it was Echo, and in Asia it was Vitz. And... the Chinese call it the Weizi.

The sedan and the hatchback Toyota Yaris both look good and appealing to me. The Yaris sedan's front grille area looks a bit like a dolphin snout to me. I don't know, just an observation. But they pulled it off to flow together with the rest of the design to look good front to back. I considered trading in for a Yaris sedan in early 2006 but never even took a test drive and hung on to my '01 Kia Sportage. I traded the Sportage 4X4 in on a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS in March of 2007. The rest is history, dudes.

New Toyota Vios launched in China.

The Toyota Vios is a car specifically for the South East Asia markets, and the Chinese market. China Car Times is never quite sure how to describe this car, so think of it as a smaller Toyota Corolla. The previous Vios was a good seller in China, but has now been replaced by the newer, better looking Vios.

Some astute China Car Times readers may have noticed that this Vios is actually a renamed Toyota Belta (otherwise known as a Toyota Yaris sedan). The Vios is made via the Toyota-FAW joint venture and packs a 1.5 engine. The Chinese motoring press particularly praised the 1.5 motor in the Vios, saying the VVT-i was a pleasure, especially as it only used 5.1l of gas per 100km of travel - truly excellent! The only downside reported by the Chinese press is the price, priced at 130,000rmb to 180,000rmb, the Vios does come in at a touch expensive when compared to other cars in that price bracket such as the Ford Focus Saloon which may offer bigger engines and more comfort for less dollars.

For all intents and purposes the Toyota Vios would be a good investment at the price asked and return to the buyer good fuel economy and solid reliability. And, IMO, stellar good looks. I remain impressed with this car.

Toyota Yaris to be released at 2008 Beijing Auto Show in April.

March 14, 2008 - Toyota's popular compact sedan Yaris will be released at Beijing Auto Show on April 20 and launched in Chinese market simultaneously, China's Jinhua newspaper reported today.

The company said it plans to sell 35,000 Yaris vehicles this year in Chinese market or approximately 6,000 vehicles a month.

"Considering the sales potential of the model, the 35,000 sales target for 2008 is not a difficult one," said Feng Yaxin, deputy general manager of Guangzhou Toyota sales department.

Toyota Yaris is one of Toyota's most successful models in term of sales. Since the model goes on sale in 1999, a total amount of 3 million units have been sold out globally, including 1.6 million in European markets.

Feng said Guangzhou Toyota plans to sell 210,000 vehicles in 2008, including 175,000 Camry vehicles and 35,000 Yaris vehicles.

Currently Guangzhou Toyota produce both Yaris and Camry. A total of 12,184 Camry vehicles were sold last month, making the model sales champion in China's mid range car segment for 15 consecutive months.
Last November, Chinese authorities have approved Guanghou Toyota's plan to build a second plant in Guangzhou. The total capacity of Guangzhou Toyota, after the completion of the second plant, will reach half a million units annually.

The compact hatchback to be launched in Chinese market in April will come in two versions based on different displacement: a 1.3L engine and a 1.5L engine. And the model will be priced at a range of 60,000 yuan to 80,000 yuan ($8,000-$10,000).

The Toyota Yaris is my favorite Toyota. In fact, I had my eye on a red 2007 Toyota Yaris in 5-speed form for many, many moon in Idaho. A bargain at $14,775. It is a bargain when one considers the Toyota resale values hold up so good.

However, I am very glad I waited for the 2008 Rally Red Mitsubishi Lancer GTS. :nod:

It is hard to argue against that thought. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better deal for your money. Great gas mileage and build-quality, and unbeatable resale values make this the best deal for your money, overall, I agree.
