Tokyo.– Toyota Motor Corp. on Tuesday rolled out its first made-in-China Camry from a new factory that the Japanese automaker hopes will help it to catch up with rivals in the world's fastest-growing car market.
Hundreds of Japanese and Chinese dignitaries were on hand for an elaborate ceremony as the Camry, the best-selling car in the United States and a top import in China, rolled off a line at Toyota's 3.8 billion yuan ($475 million) plant in Nansha, north of Hong Kong.
The company says the spic-and-span facility brings its most advanced technology to China — a step sought by Chinese leaders as they try to build up a world-class auto industry.
"There is no question but that the Chinese market will overtake the Japanese market," said Yoshimi Inaba, Toyota's former chief for America, who was appointed last year to head the company's push into China.
Toyota joins a rush by the world's automakers for a share of China's auto market, which saw sales jump by 30 percent last year to 5.7 million vehicles, third largest in the world behind Japan's 5.8 million.
In a bid to pump up sales, Toyota said Chinese-made Camrys will be priced at 197,800-269,800 yuan ($24,700-$33,700), well below analysts' expectations. Imported Camrys last year sold for 340,000 yuan ($42,500).
"You see the price, it's very clear that we face heavy pressure in this market," said Zhang Fangyou, chairman of Toyota's local partner, Guangzhou Automobile Group.
Toyota, a relative latecomer to China, had a paltry 3.5 percent of the market last year, with 183,150 vehicles, according to the company's latest statistics.
That puts it well behind top foreign automaker General Motors Corp., which vaulted past Volkswagen AG of Germany to grab 11 percent of the market last year with 665,390 units sold.
Despite political tension between Japan and China that flared into riots last year, Japanese automakers are heavily investing in China, and last year pumped a total of 113.7 billion yen ($1.03 billion) into the country.
Much of that spending has gone to the area around the southern city of Guangzhou, near Hong Kong, which has become an automaking hub.
Japan's No. 3 automaker, Honda Motor Co., began making Accords in Guangzhou in 1999 and launched exports of its Jazz compact model from there to Europe last year. No. 2 Nissan Motor Co.'s joint venture in eastern Guangzhou with Dongfeng Motors has been ramping up production of the Tiida.
Toyota began exporting to China in 1964 but lagged behind rivals in the country, choosing instead to concentrate on the markets in the United States and Europe. It wasn't until 2002 that it rolled out its first locally produced, Toyota-brand car with a Chinese partner, state-owned FAW Group Corp.
Chinese and Japanese officials are keen to highlight progress in business ties between the two Asian giants amid disputes over territory and over Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's visits to a war shrine that honors the dead of World War II, including war criminals.
Such political tension doesn't seem to affect most Chinese consumers, who link Toyota with quality, reliability and fuel-efficiency.
"There are already a lot of loyal customers," said Yale Zhang, an analyst at CSM Asia Corp. "Everybody is waiting for this car."
Toyota says it has spent 215 billion yen ($1.9 billion) in China since 1998 and now has a dozen plants making parts and assembling vehicles.
"This factory has the world's most advanced technology, the newest equipment," says Katsuhiro Shinzato, a Toyota employee, as he led a tour through the factory's highly automated lines ahead of the Camry launch. Local workers spent between three and six months in training.
The daily routine calls for 30-minute meetings twice a day, at the beginning and end of shifts, to thrash out any problems. The production line is built at eye level to encourage eye contact as well, Shinzato said. "Communication is extremely important," he said.
Although the factory has 263 of the latest robots, its level of automation is only 54 percent, he said, well below the 80 percent to 90 percent found at factories in Japan and the West. That's typical of most foreign auto plants in China, where labor costs a fraction of Western rates.
Despite wages of about $2 an hour, foreign automakers face relatively high costs in China, mainly due to their need to import steel and components from abroad.

Toyota to build, sell Camry hybrids in China in 2010.

July 01, 2008 - Toyota Motor Corp plans to begin building and selling a hybrid version of its Camry sedan in China in 2010 in anticipation of growing demand for environmentally friendly vehicles, the Nikkei business daily reported on Tuesday.

A Toyota spokesman could not immediately confirm the report.

The newspaper said Toyota plans to manufacture 10,000 cars per year in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong as part of its joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile Group Co.

Toyota, which leads the auto industry in gasoline-electric hybrid technology, is rapidly ramping up production of the fuel-efficient vehicles to meet growing demand as consumers look to save cash at the pump amid record-high fuel prices.

The company's latest move comes as the Chinese government, which recently boosted gasoline prices, considers giving preferential tax treatment to eco-friendly cars, the paper said.

It said Toyota will first produce the gasoline-powered Camry at the Guangzhou plant's second line in 2009, and will add the hybrid version the following year.

The company has been assembling the hybrid-only Prius cars in China, but the number has been small. Of the 430,000 hybrid vehicles Toyota built last year, only 320 were produced there.

In June, Toyota said it will start assembling Camry hybrid cars in Thailand and Australia over the next two years, adding to the current overseas production bases of China and the United States.

September 23, 2008 - Guangzhou Toyota launched its 2009 Camry G-Series models on September 22 and thereby released the lowest price of the mid- to high-end sedans by boosting the configurations and launching new models, reported Shanghai Securities News today.

Guangzhou Toyota, a joint venture between Guangzhou Auto and Toyota Motor, said that this low-price stragety is to fortify the benchmark role that its Camry model has played in the ranks of Chinese-made mid- to high-end sedans. This move by Guangzhou Toyota is likely to trigger a new round of price war in China's mid- to high-end sedan market.

Of the '09 Camry G-Series models released by Guangzhou Toyota on yesterday, the 200G luxury (upgraded) edition sells for 208,800 yuan ($30,500), 200G Navi luxury (upgraded) edition for 226,800 yuan; 240G luxury (upgraded) edition for 224,800 yuan, 240G Navi (upgraded) edition for 24,280 yuan.

A top executive of the company said that the 2009 Camry 240G sedan is now cheaper by 11,500 yuan. As part of the additional features, both the 240G and 240G Navi models are equipped with the vehicle stability control (VSC) system, TRAC traction control system, and parking radar, among others. The three safety devices have their prices cut down by 5,000 yuan.

What I like about the Camry is its design, versatility and performance. Im always been a fan of the ride's interiors. :)

The Toyota Prius is not a common site in China, possibly due to its high price and a general populace that is more interested in buying a car that gives more bang for your buck rather than less bang for your buck, but more green credentials. Even producing the Toyota Prius in China via the FAW JV hasn’t given the car much of a price cut, the Honda Civic hybrid for example, is made in Japan and imported into China yet they cost roughly the same price.

Toyota do not seemed to be fazed by the lack of sales action for the Prius, and possibly plan on bringing the Toyota Camry Hybrid to China soon, as one has been spotted in China:

Toyota Motor has started producing and selling the Camry Hybrid sedan in China via Guangzhou Toyota Motor, its Chinese joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile Group.

On April 12, Guangzhou Toyota held a launch ceremony and press conference in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong province, to mark the beginning of production and sale of the "Camry Hybrid" sedan. About 350 people attended the ceremony, including suppliers, dealers, officials and journalists.

The locally produced Camry Hybrid car, priced between 319,800 yuan ($46,830) and 364,800 yuan, start selling at 107 dealerships of Guangzhou Toyota but are planned to eventually expand to its entire sales network across China.

More than 500,000 non-hybrid Camry sedans have been sold in the Chinese market since its launch in June 2006. The hybrid Prius was launched in China in 2005, followed by the Lexus LS600h sedan and RX400h SUV in 2007, and the Lexus GS450h in 2009.

The Camry Hybrid follows the Lexus "GS450h" sports sedan to become the fifth Toyota- or Lexus-brand hybrid vehicle launched in China.

Guangqi Toyota will begin Chinese production of the Toyota Camry SE this year, sources revealed today.

The sporty SE edition, currently sold overseas, has a significantly different exterior design from the regular Camry, with a full black mesh grille and 17 inch aluminum alloy wheels.

As far as the interior goes, the Camry SE comes in either charcoal black or grey palettes, with a three-spoke full leather steering wheel and blue tinted Optitron gauges.

Under the hood, the SE boasts a 179-hp Dual VVT-I equipped DOHC2.5L four-valve engine producing 171 ft.-lb. of torque. A 268-hp, 248 ft.-lb. DOHC3.5L engine is also available as an option. The SE chassis is also completely redone, with new springs, absorbers and bearings.
