Chinese motoring fans have been getting excited ever since the motoring press leaked rumors of a fabled model just for the Chinese market, not the new Jetta, nor the new Santana 4000. Model Y as its codenamed, is expected to be an entirely new model for the Chinese market made by Shanghai VW and SAIC.
We have since learned from the below screen shot that Model Y is now to be named the ‘La Vida’, and is an A-segment car, thus above the Polo but below the Santana 4000. We are unsure which mischievous fellow took the above photo, but it is currently circulating far and wide in Chinese automotive circles.

I'm right - there is a Tiguan in this sheet? :eek:

VW to launch mid-class Lavida.

Shanghai Volkswagen Co Ltd said it will launch a new mid-class sedan in China this year to complete its product mix and tap the growing demand in the world's second-largest auto market.

The model, named Lavida and which means life and hope in Spanish, will be a brand-new version specially designed for the Chinese market under VW's global product strategy.

''It will be the prototype for our next-generation model in the economy car sector and will also be the benchmark in the rapidly expanding segment,'' the company said.

Shanghai Volkswagen is the joint venture between German car maker Volkswagen AG and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp.

The Lavida is expected to make its debut at the auto show in Beijing in April and will be marketed to appeal to young people.

The model illustrates Shanghai VW's efforts to increase its self-development capabilities and compete with rival Shanghai GM.

Shanghai Volkswagen reported its sales rose 23 percent to 436,000 units last year, with the biggest sellers including the Santana, Polo, Touran and Skoda's Octavia.

But General Motors Corp's Chinese venture Shanghai GM held its sales crown in China last year with sales improving 22 percent to 500,000 units.

China's passenger car sales rose 21.7 percent to 6.29 million units last year, according to China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

Lavida to cost 100,000rmb?

The China only VW Lavida which was shown off at the Beijing Auto Show is expected to cost as little as 100,000rmb for the base 1.6l model. Since its release via the internet several months ago, the Lavida has been steadily growing a dedicated fan base in China. Chinese drivers do love their VWs, and the Lavida seems to be a reward from VW for putting up with years (read as decades) VW selling their not so popular cars (Bora, Jetta, Santana etc)to the Chinese, who actually turned out to love them and refused to buy anything else (until GM came along)

The VW Lavida has also been given a Chinese name ‘Lang Yi’ Lang means clear or bright, and Yi can mean leisurely, outstanding, or even escape. Obviously the English name should have been Clear Escape. Advertising for the Lavida has sprung up all over VW’s back yard - Shanghai’s elevated roads are covered in VW Lavida posters advertising what the Chinese press are calling, the VW ‘Mini Phaeton’ The Lavida will come with a 1.6l or a 2.0l engine, at 100k for the 1.6l version.

VW Lavida on sale for 112,800 yuan plus

June 26, 2008 - Shanghai Volkswagen launched its new Lavida to the Chinese market on June 25. This all-new Lavida model is the first A-Class sedan jointly developed by Chinese and German technicians of the joint venture between Shanghai Auto (SAIC) and Volkswagen. The Lavida "made in and for China" will sell for 112,800 yuan ($16,424) to 149,800 yuan.

The Lavida sedan, which debuted at the 2008 Beijing auto show in April, is said to be "thoroughly tailored to the automotive wishes of modern Chinese society." It is Shanghai VW's first production model of the Lavida sedan, which Volkswagen has designated as one of its new strategic models for the growing Chinese market.

At the Beijing show, the German carmaker bragged that the front-wheel-drive Lavida is "the first Volkswagen to be designed and developed entirely in China" and that it is intended to "blend into the urban environments of Chinese metropolises like Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou." The car is relatively large by Chinese standards, measuring 181 inches long, 2 inches longer than a Jetta.

The Lavida for sale in China's A-Class auto market will be offered with a choice of four-cylinder engines 1.6L and 2.0L engines, with an optional six-speed Tiptronic available. Now on sale are seven models in five colors: two 1.6L manual models, two 1.6L automatic models, two 2.0L automatic models, and one 2.0L manual model, priced between 112,800 yuan and 149,800 yuan.

Standard features of the Lavida include antilock brakes, front airbags, climate control, a CD player with an MP3 interface, power windows and an anti-theft alarm. A DVD navigation system, CD changer and side airbags are among the options.

Lavida car's short supply to ease by year end.

September 17, 2008 - The short supply of Lavida (Langyi) cars made by Shanghai Volkswagen will be eased by the end of this year, the company's sales executive Zhanghai Hailiang told National Business Daily yesterday.

In the next three months, the joint venture carmaker will not raise the selling price of its Lavida model, and its Lavida output will accelerate and increase to meet the great demand in the market by December, said Zhang.

Since its launch in late June 2008 as an all-new model for China's A-class auto market, the Lavida model made by Shanghai VW has sold about 11,500 units, with 6,365 units sold in August (up 56% month on month) and has become one of the best-selling sedans in the market. Currently, most Shanghai VW’s dealers nationwide have sold all Lavida cars out of their inventories.

Last month, the Lavida model saw its sales defying a more drastic downturn in China's auto market, and they have been in short supply these weeks. The biggest concern of Shanghai VW's sales division is how to meet the growing number of orders (for Lavida cars) from customers and dealers, rather than worrying about the general slide in the auto market.

"Our Lavida production will be still like an uphill journey in the coming four or five months, but the company will speed up the manufacturing and increase output by working overtime properly and improving the productivity," said the sales executive.

VERY smart of VW to do a 1.4 version of the Lavida - it will save the consumer a nice chunk of change when it comes to sales tax due to new government regulations promoting the sales of smaller engine cars. It will be interesting to see how they price this........higher or lower than the basic 1.6 model? My guess is a bit higher - it has a auto trans and climate control. The Blue Motion version seems pretty interesting too - I'll be curious to see what it's gas mileage ends up REALLY being. 5.8l per 100km sounds pretty decent........depending on the engine size. Anyone have any info on the engine size for the Blue Motion?

In Germany the 1.4 TSI Engines are always more expensive than the 1.6l NA Engines. Doesn't matter if it is a Golf, A3, Skoda Octavia or the Seat Leon.

Almost 1500€ depending on the Modell.

Question: Does the Chinese Lavida 1.4 TSI have the DSG DoubleCluchTransmission?

Because in GER the 1.4 TSI are only available with a 6 gear stick and the 7-gear DSG.

Lavida 1.4 TSI is equipted with DSG gerabox.

About Bluemotion:
It's also powered by 1.4 TSI engine with 125 HP, mated to 7-speed DSG.

I like the Chinese designed version more than this generic design facelift :nono:

The new Santana NF also looks to have a similar rear end, why make them all look the same :mad: ????
