Great Wall to launch Coolbear, Mini SUV in early 2009.

October 9, 2008 - Great Wall Motor, a major pickup truck and SUV producer in China, said that it will launch its Coolbear sedan at the beginning of next year and its another new model, the Great Wall Mini SUV, will be rolled out in early 2009, reported Beijing Times today.

The Great Wall Coolbear, as the company's third compact sedan after the Great Wall Peri (GWperi) and Florid, originally had its launch scheduled for July 2008, but now its rollout is postponed to January 2009 as “part of the company's corporate strategy,” said a sales executive of Great Wall Motor, adding that the Florid model will go on sale in the coming November.

Following the Florid, Great Wall Motor expects to roll out a new model every few months in the years ahead, with the Coolbear as its first new model to hit the market in 2009. The GWperi car, launched earlier this year, has been entangled in a lawsuit with Italian carmaker Fiat who claims that this car is a copy of its Panda model.

After the launch of the Coolbear, Great Wall will release another new model, the Great Wall Mini SUV, in early 2009. It has been touted as the first 1.3L four-wheel-drive SUV made in China. An insider from the company said that the Mini SUV will be priced betwen 50,000 ($7,330) and 70,000 yuan.

Great Wall Motor, China's largest maker and exporter of pickups and SUVs, has made its foray into the small-car segment. The company launched its first sedan Peri in March this year. The Coolbear and Mini SUV are set to become the most 'cool' and 'sporty' of the Great Wall Motor lineup.

From China car Times:

Great Wall launched their range of concept cars to a shocked audience at the 2007 Shanghai Show, the shock came from the fact that many of these cars bearing Great Walls logo were actually based on, or at least heavily ‘influenced’ by other automotive companies designs. So far, this has landed Great Wall in various legal troubles in Italy, leading to their Fiat Panda-esque model, the Perry, being band from Europe for IPR violations.

Except it appears that Great Wall is still unfazed by these legal issues, and is still plugging on with its plans for the Cool Bear, which looks a lot like Toyota’s Scion XB, to further these issues, pictures which allegedly show a first generation Scion XB in Great Walls factory:
http://s2.mojalbum.com/kitajci-5-foto_4219952_13082292_14074635.jpg

In the below pictures, rudimentary shells for the Cool Bear are on display, also images of the forth coming Cool Bears interior can be seen:
http://s2.mojalbum.com/kitajci-5-foto_4219952_13082292_14074622.jpg
http://s2.mojalbum.com/kitajci-5-foto_4219952_13082292_14074615.jpg

The ultimate photo must be his one though, the unnamed photographer from the Netease auto portal pulled back the tape on the above silver Scion XB to reveal:
http://s2.mojalbum.com/kitajci-5-foto_4219952_13082292_14074630.jpg

Great Wall has had an amazing amount of succes with its SUV and Truck range, but to taint its good reputation with multiple amounts of copying is very foolish for a fledgling company with aspirations of heading to Europe and the USA to do. The Scion XB is an incredibly cool car, a car that is so ugly that its design actually appeals to fashionable young drivers, the Scion range should have been offered in China as well as the USA, but perhaps Toyota wished to build up loyalty within the Toyota fold before launching sub brands in the PRC. Toyota has had several models copied, or fully cloned, in China, and its about time they got tough about it, forcing Chinese car makers into producing cars. The actions of a few Chinese car makers are souring the fledgling industry as a whole, before its even had a big chance to leave China for the promised auto markets of Europe and North America.

Great Walls Coolbear MPV may have a little bit more than a passing likeness to Scions Xb, but that doesnt stop it from being the coolest cat in the jungle. Great Wall Motors (GWM) have been working hard to push their small car range, but large results have yet to be seen, the CoolBear may be the ‘big’ car for Great Wall, as its coolness will undoubtedly appeal to the younger generation.

In short, we love it. GWM is expected to use a 1.5l engine for the Coolbear, which will give it enough punt for going around town. More information on the Coolbear, when we get it!

As early as 2006 Beijing Auto Show, Great Wall Automobile exhibited a cool concept cars named CoolBear. In the last two years of Shanghai and Beijing Auto Shows, we found CoolBear once again. Though they did not like the rumors, as listed in 2008. The reporters said that people can not found any saloon cars with the style like CoolBear, let alone a small car. With three years of breeding and carved, from the first appearance to production,CoolBear did brought big changes and new surprises to us from time to time. Industry analysts believe that: At present, CoolBear hasn’t direct competitors yet.

Hey daewoo-chevrolet, I've posted a thread with that same car that you've got except I called it the H3, according to China car times. it seems there must be more than one name for it.
BTW, is it some sort of crossover?

NOW that I've taken a closer look, I now know it's called the M3. Hang on, didn't BYD have a car called the M3?

Ok, as I have promised, I am going to let you know my experiences with coolbear.

It is great, first impression, easy parking, huge space in the salon, both in the front and in the back, reasonable price ( I paid around 73000 RMB which amounts to US 10.579.

Last night I was driving in heavy rain, heavy traffic (if you know the traffic in Zhengzhou, China. It can be scary) and suddenly the windshield wiper in front of the driver (me) just fell off and I could see nothing but the water, flowing down on the windshield, in front of my eyes

Somehow, I managed to find a spot to park my Coolbear and examine what was wrong with it. Actually, nothing much, the person who was in the car assembly to install wipers , was apparently absent-minded and he did not use his thumb to push the wiper deep enough to lock it with the holder. I did it in a second. It's ok now.
This is the only unpleasant experience I have had with Coolbear so far.
Tell the truth, I love it.
P.S. I suspect there is something wrong with the stereo system but I can not be sure coz I listen to some pirated Audio books on the player and the sound may come from downloaded CDs.
You can contact me at scsbo@yahoo.com if you need to know more details.
happy driving1 I love my bear

Great Wall to sell Coolbear in Europe

From China Car Times:
Greatwall is apparently planning to sell the Coolbear MPV in Europe sometime next year, as Greatwall has recently been awarded European Whole of Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA) which was awarded by the Vehicle Certification Agency based in the UK.

The WVTA testing is quite comprehensive and covers 48 different tests, 13 on active safety, 13 on passive safety and eight on emissions and environmental protection, all of which Greatwall Motors was able to successfully pass.

Greatwalls current European market is made up of Italy, although Greatwall does expect to expand aggressively in Eastern and central Europe over the coming months.

The forefront of Greatwalls export drive has been the Greatwall Hover SUV which has seen exports of the model rise by 57% this year with cars being sent to 128 different countries and territories according to GreatWall. The Hover is reportedly built to a four star Euro NCAP level, however it has yet to be tested independently in Europe.

Presentation of GWM CB150 for South Africa:
http://www.iol.co.za/motoring/road-tests/gwm-cb150-cool-to-be-square-1.1004203

Rumour has it that when Chinese carmaker Great Wall Motors (GWM) was planning the South African introduction of its latest compact hatch competitor, the CB150, the company undertook a straw poll by calling around for thoughts on badging between CB150 or Cool Bear 150.

I think they made the right choice with CB. Cool Bear may have come across a little on the chintzy side.

But that’s not to say that this isn’t a cool customer. The Daihatsu Materia, and the locally-tweaked Materia Turbo, were both firm favourites of mine. Design-wise the CB150 is similar, but strictly speaking is closer looking to the Toyota Scion which isn’t sold in South Africa. It’s designed like a box with its high roof and vertical lines.

The downside of this boxy approach is that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea; the upside is the real sense of space you get in the cabin with that tall roof.

Rear legroom is also very good and will make most luxury saloons blush, but this does come at the expense of boot space – although the back seats do fold down. I’d rather have the rear legroom to be honest and, believe it or not, I squeezed a pram into that cargo bay thanks to the vertical boot lid.

Because of the design, the large front windscreen tends to let in more sun and you sometimes battle the glare when driving.

Buyers have two options, the standard CB150 or the CB150ME, the latter of which means you can choose from options like bigger wheels, body striping, leather seats and steering wheel, custom carpets, and a dropped suspension.

On test here was the basic CB, but even this gets an impressive spec level including power steering, aircon, electric windows and mirrors, CD player with MP3 capability, steering wheel controls, and park assistance all standard fare. Safety levels are good too with the Chinese throwing in driver and passenger airbags, ABS with EBD (but no traction control), side-impact protection bars, an immobiliser, and remote central locking. Not bad for R134 265.

Powering either model is a 1.5-litre variable-valve timing engine pushing 77kW and 138Nm, mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. Besides being a little on the buzzy side, the engine was capable and shuttled the CB along with little drama.

The power steering is very light, and the clutch seemed to have an oversensitive spring release mechanism. I did like the small and unusual horizontal rev counter – think of those fuel economy gauges in old Mercs and Beemers with needles that swung left to right.

We wouldn’t hate GWM exploring some aftermarket force-fed technology though, especially after the car took a leisurely 14 seconds to get from standstill to 100km/h, and needing a calendar for the quarter mile (19.2 seconds) when we put it against the stopwatch.

The lack of a sixth gear was also evident on the open road, and played a part in the slightly high 8l/100km consumption we realised (the carmaker claims 7.2). Top end is claimed as 165km/h, which seemed attainable.

The Chinese designers did overlook one or two things on the practical side too, which could be problematic in the long run. The most annoying is that there’s no clock. The interior light seemed to work sporadically when opening doors, the air vents adjust vertically only, the steering is height adjustable only, and the driver’s seat is positioned quite high – with no lowering functionality.

The fire extinguisher under the driver’s seat was hardly confidence-inspiring, but I’d rather have access to one than not. And unfortunately the dealer’s pine-tree air freshener in the door pocket did little to disguise the smell we’ve found a trademark in new Chinese cars.

VERDICT:

Okay, so there are a few niggles with the Cool Bear, but in terms of the local Chinese brigade it’s a fact that GWM are head and shoulders above the rest in terms of build quality and drivability.

The CB had a tinny overall feel to it and can’t really be compared with the Ford Fiestas, VW Polos and Opel Corsas of the world, which is why it costs so much less, but it’s not cheap and nasty either.

And seeing that you’re saving some money, it may be worth going for the ME spec and adding the wheels and stripes, it needs these to finish off that boxy package.
