June 18, 2008 - Shanghai General Motors (GM) will put an Opel model into production early in 2009, sources from Shanghai GM said. It is predicted that the model, possibly the Opel Insignia which will come to light in July, will be attached a Buick label as the new generation of Buick La Crosse.

Sources from Shanghai GM confirmed that Opel will be produced locally, but Shanghai GM will use Buick brand instead of Opel for the production. No detail about the model is disclosed. A foreign news agency reports Opel plans to make the global debut of the brand new Opel Insignia, the latest generation Opel Vectra at London auto show which is to be held in July 22. It is also reported that the model will be produced in the name of Buick La Crosse. The Opel Insignia is likely to be the first Opel model which is to be produced locally in China.

The European-style Insignia has both sedan and hatchback versions with seven engine options, of which four are petrol engines that generate an output ranging from 115hp to 260hp and three are direct-injection diesel engines generating a power from 110hp to 160hp. The model is also available in two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive.

Both sedan and hatchback Insignia will make their global debut at the upcoming London auto show.

Shanghai GM to launch new Buick Regal this year.

August 12, 2008 - Shanghai FM is set to launch a new version of its self-developed brand the Buick Regal later this year. Along with the newly rolled-out Buick LaCross, the new Regal is expected to capture large market share in China's mid-class auto market.

The launch of the Buick Regal in 2002 is seen as a landmark event on Shanghai GM's auto-making road. As a model specially designed for the Chinese market, the elegant, comfortable, luxury Regal has been well received by Chinese customers. It has been a model of Shanghai GM to rival Accord, Passat and often topped the sales list in the mid-class car market in China.

But recently, its rival models have new-generation products on sale and this renders the Buick Regal obsolescent. In order to maintain its leadership in the market of this model, Shanghai GM has planned to make a new product of this brand, in addition to rolling out the Buick LaCrosse in mid-July this year. The Buick LaCrosse is the first mainstream eco-hybrid model for China's mid-end vehicle segment.

The Buick Regal’s new version, derived from or renamed Opel Insignia, will share the Epsilon II platform with LaCrosse, but will have slightly higher market orientation than the latter. The Opel Insignia, as a new Regal with the larger size, higher configurations, stronger power and more Chinese elements, is expected to hit the China market by the end of this year.

New Buick Regal: Opel Insignia-Based Sedan Introduced in China.

Shanghai GM, a joint venture between General Motors and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) has taken the wraps off the new Chinese market Buick Regal. With the exception of a few minor styling details like the new grille, the side air-vents and the addition of turning signals on the exterior mirrors, the Regal is in essence a rebadged Opel Insignia. Even though Opels are offered in the domestic market, GM execs considered that the Insignia would sell better as a Buick since -believe it or not- the American brand is more popular among Chinese consumers.

Buick Regal ChinaScheduled to hit Buick's Chinese showrooms in late December, the new Regal sedan will be offered initially with two 4-cylinder petrol engines, a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter unit developing an output of 165HP and a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 217HP. Both versions will be offered with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard with Buick announcing 0 to 100km/h (62mph) times of 9.8 and 7.8 seconds for the Regal 2.4L and 2.0T respectively.

But in early 2008, its rival models had new-generation products on sale and this likely rendered the Buick Regal obsolescent. In order to maintain its leadership in the market of this model, Shanghai GM planned to make a new product of this brand, in addition to rolling out the Buick LaCrosse in mid-July this year. The Buick LaCrosse is the first mainstream eco-hybrid model for China's mid-grade vehicle segment.

The Buick Regal's new version, derived from or the European Opel Insignia, shares the Epsilon II platform with LaCrosse, but has slightly higher market orientation than the latter. GM simply popped out the Opel grille, got rid of the lightning logo and retrofitted Buick badging for Buick-loving Chinese.

The new Regal comes with a choice of two power-trains: a 164-hp 2.4L four-cylinder engine and 211-hp 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder, both with a six-speed manual transmission. The naturally aspirated four-banger has a leisurely 0-60 time of 9.8 seconds, while the turbo motor scoots to 60 in 7.8 seconds.

As a Chinese version of the renowned Opel Insignia, the new Regal of larger build, higher configurations, stronger power and more Chinese elements will remain to be a hot-selling model in the China market. The price will be announced soon.

Buick New Regal 2.0 Turbo.

The first product of GM ever built in China, the Buick new Regal 2.0 Turbo, which will be offered with a turbocharged powerplant, is making its world introduction at the 2009 Shanghai Auto Show. The car will come with three powerplant options.

GM China says that coming out with cars equipped with turbocharged powerplants is part of their commitment in the ongoing improvement of their customer choices in the Chinese auto market. The carmaker claims that their turbocharged powertrain comes with high potency and fuel efficiency with reduced emssions. This is a move forward as GM aims to enhance its overall efficiency in its product lineup in the domestic market. The New Regal intermediate sedan, an advanced GM produce, was released to the Chinese market last December.

It is patterned after the new global vehicle architecture designed by GM in Europe in collaboration with GM design and engineering teams around the world, together with Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) in Shanghai. Besides high-efficiency powertrains, it also provides refined design, superior safety and unparalleled skill.The current-generation 2.0 liter Turbo Direct Injection powerplant comes with two overhead camshafts, four valves for each cylinder, and common rail, multiple fuel direct injection, along with a variable geometry turbocharger for quick throttle reaction at low engine speeds. It incorporates maximum power output of 162kW (220hp) achieved at 5,300rpm and maximum torque of 350Nm at 2,000-4,000 rpm.

The acceleration rate is 0-100km/h in 7.8 seconds, making it the most potent turbocharged powerplant on the market at the present time. The fuel economy of the powerplant is excellent and it is equipped with a maintenance-free diesel particulate filter as part of its standard equipment. The engine satisfactorily meets the emission standard of advanced Euro V.Shanghai GM also offers 2.0 liter and 2.4 liter ECOTEC powerplants, which are named one of the top-ten powerplants on the planet. The 2.0 liter engine has a maximum power output of 108kW at 6,200rpm and a peak torque of 190Nm at 4,600rpm. It can sprint from standstill 100km/h in 11.4 seconds and hits a ceiling speed of 197km/h. Fuel economy is 8.8 liters for every 100 km under regular driving situations.

The BUICK Regal ( actually OPEL INSIGNIA ) became very fast very popular and you can see it already every single day on Chinas streets.
But the price is unacceptable high and the quality level compared to the european Opel Insignia almost extremly low.After a conversation with a local BUICK dealership and a close look as well as a test drive i have to say that i am a lil bit dissapointed. The BUICK Regal is a LOW LEVEL Opel Insignia and overpriced for the chinese market - but as well as most of the GM products within a short time very sucessfull.( Local Opel Dealerships hear the question every day when and how to get the OPEL INSIGNIA)

GM presented another engine in Regal - 1.6 turbo engine with 180 HP.

The Buick Regal 1.6T is the latest model model from Shanghai GM and is preparing to enter into the segment with its racy 1.6T engine.

The 1.6T is reasonably powerful, but obviously plays second fiddle to the 2.0T model that is further up the range. The 1.6T power stats are quite reasonable at 132kW/5800 rpm total power at 230 Nm/2200 rpm which translates to 179bhp, the 2.0T model is good for 220bhp.

The only downside to the 1.6T version is its high price tag at just shy of 200,000rmb (199,999rmb to be exact) it’s hardly the cheapest model, especially as the naturally aspirated 2.0l model is priced from 179,999rmb to 199,999rmb.

Although the power is certainly there for the 1.6T (similar power to the 2.4L model) will consumers opt for the 1.6T and pay less sales tax than the 2.0l and 2.4l models? Only time will tell when the third and fourth quarter sales statistics are revealed.

From 2010 Regal will be available in USA also. American regal is again just a rebadged award-winning Opel insignia. It differentiates even less from the German original than Chinese Regal.
