Southeast Motor to make domestic crossover “Zinger” this year.

April 2, 2008 - Mitsubishi Motors will enlarge its cooperation with the Chinese carmaker to further expand the production of Mitsubishi brands in China, local Chinese newspaper Chongqing Business Daily reported.

The report said that Mitsubishi has promised that Southeast can produce the "Zinger” crossover vehicle and any other Mitsubishi models locally.

According to industry insiders, the Chinese-made Crossover vehicle, namely the Mitsubishi "Zinger" crossover vehicle, to be produced within the year, will be introduced into China directly from Mitsubishi. Southeast and Mitsubishi will join hands to make the research and improvement for the model. This Mitsubishi Zinger, which combines SUV, MPV and a passenger vehicle's design concept, features the Mitsubishi CHALLENGER chassis, the 2720mm axis spread, and an engine capacity between 2.0 liters and 2.4 liters.

Another model, an A0-segment new car, a small passenger vehicle developed by Southeast independently, is equipped with the Mitsubishi 1.5-liter high-performance engine and caters to the vital young people for its fashionable appearance.

Industry analysts believed that by enhancing the cooperation with Southeast, Mitsubishi intends to fight to win, or it will die due to its poor complete car market achievement. An executive from Southeast said that the Chinese carmaker will also get in on Mitsubishi's boost to start many layout plans this year to subdivide the market, and will try to sell 80,500 vehicles in 2008, which is to grow by 34% over last year.

The Mitsubishi Zinger, a cross between SUV, MPV, and passenger sedan was spotted out in a SouEast carpark:

Wikipedia describes the Zinger as thus: “[the Zinger]merges together the best characteristics of [three] vehicles, the sporty character and ruggedness of an SUV, the spaciousness and versatility of a van, and riding comfort of a passenger car”

The Zinger is a car that SouEast desperately needs to replace their aging Mitsubishi Delica MPV, a car that may have put China on its motoring wheels, but is sorely lacking behind the competition in 2008.

Southeast Motor said its Mitsubishi Zinger SUV will go on sale in mainland China by the end of the year with the selling price at about 100,000 yuan ($14,641) above, Guangzhou Daily reported.

An early investigation conducted by Southeast Motor showed that Chinese consumers buying RVs can be divided into two groups, for work and for life, with each taking 50%. Then the Mitsubishi Zinger came out to meet both work and family demand.

It is reported that Zinger creates an “MICS” concept and is positioned as “MICS-RV”. “M” represents Multi-purpose、“I” for Interior roominess & Riding comfort, “C” for Compact body size, “S” for Sophisticated Styling, plus “RV” for Rough-road running capability and Value for the money & Affordable price.

The Zinger is attractive to many also because it features an advanced Mitsubishi Mivec engine, which represents the top level of the world engine technology. The technology has been widely used on Mitsubishi Evo and Pajero.
