daewoo-chevrolet 09-03-2008, 11:50 AM Chinese Chevy Lova Gives Clues To Next-Generation Chevy Aveo
We love seeing spy shots of cars we've never heard of, which is why we were interested in scoping out this Chinese-market Chevy Lova. As you can see for yourself, though, it didn't take much sleuthing to identify the lines as those of the Chevy Aveo, but not exactly the one we're familiar with. The Lova has a Malibu-esque front end and tail treatment, while the interior is significantly upgraded over the current US Aveo (and Chinese Lova). We've already gotten some idea of what the LA-bound 2009 Aveo5 will bring us, so is this car destined to be the 2010 Chevy Aveo?

KiwiGuy 02-12-2009, 03:25 AM Would be a considerable improvement over the old Aveo. From what I read, built quality wasn't very good and the engines lacked power somewhat.

It looks pretty good. The rear (especially the tail lights) reminds me of the Renault Thalia/Symbol.

martin_krpan 11-04-2009, 01:31 PM Shanghai GM produces its first own brand vehicle
November 4, 2009
'After 4 years' R&D, New Chevrolet Sail, the first own-brand vehicle of Shanghai GM, has completed the testing proceeding and is ready to be launched," Ding Lei, general manager of Shanghai GM has told the reporter from Xinhua News.
The New Sail is due to be the first vehicle produced by a Chinese auto joint venture, with independent intellectual property rights. This success marks the breakthrough of domestic own brand R&D, easing the impasse that core technologies are entirely controlled by overseas automakers.
The current joint ventures in Chinese auto market, accounting for 70% market share, counts on the oversea technologies, and some are even reduced to production assembly plants. Lack of own brand labels is a widespread problem challenging Chinese auto companies.
The New Sail is a compact sedan to target at family consumers with its stylish look, comfortable space and fuel efficiency. With an engine of 1.6 or 1.4 liters, the total fuel consumption per kilometer is expected to reach only 5.7 liters.

mobiclue 12-29-2009, 03:32 AM Thanks for the shots. Looks very similar to Indian variant of Aveo.
boogiecat 12-29-2009, 07:36 AM Looks nice..Hoping that they'll export this one in other markets especially in South East Asian market!!
jmsteiny 12-29-2009, 10:14 PM A memo to Chevrolet/SAIC - you might want to take a look at your american cousin Ford and see how they do interiors for small cars (like the new Fiesta)....or even better, get out and look at the Honda Fit, Suzuki Swift/Alto/new Wagon R, Chery A1, or EVEN look at YOUR OWN upcoming new Beat/Spark - because this interior is about the most UNINSPIRING, BORING, BANAL thing I've seen in a long time. A damn shame too, because the exterior is well done - nothing revolutionary but it is attractive. I guess I'll just wait until the new Spark is here before I venture into a Chevy showroom.

martin_krpan 01-12-2010, 03:57 PM Sail to be exported to other countries also.
* First car developed in China by a joint venture
* Best in class fuel economy
* Will be sold in China and exported to other emerging markets
Shanghai – Shanghai GM today introduced the Chevrolet New Sail sedan, the first passenger car created in China by a Sino-foreign joint venture. The new small car was developed by Shanghai GM and the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC), both GM-SAIC joint ventures. In addition to being sold in China, the New Sail will also be exported to other emerging markets.
Shanghai GM offers five variants of the New Sail with the base model priced from RMB 56,800 (US$8,400) to RMB 68,800 (US$10,100). This marks a breakthrough in the under-RMB 70,000 (US$10,300) small car segment, where Chinese brands have traditionally been dominant. Shanghai GM also began taking orders for the New Sail today.
“Our mission has always been to enable more individuals and families to realize their dream of owning a car,” said Kevin Wale, President and Managing Director of the GM China Group. “With the New Sail, we are setting a new standard for the lower-end small car segment while fully living up to the global standards of Chevrolet, one of the world’s leading vehicle brands. The fact that the New Sail will be exported is a testament to the capabilities of our product development organization in China.”
Class-Leading, Fuel-Efficient Powertrains
The New Sail is available with a choice of class-leading 1.2-liter S-TEC II and 1.4-liter S-TEC III engines. The 1.2-liter engine achieves best in class fuel economy under comprehensive road conditions of 5.7 L/100 km. It also generates power of 64 kW, enabling the New Sail to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 12.9 seconds. The 1.4-liter engine offers power 76 kW, goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 11.9 seconds, and has fuel economy under 5.9 L/100 km.
The engines incorporate the Variable Geometry Intake System (VGIS), which provides smooth power delivery and torque across all engine speeds. Lightweight materials are used in the engine, transmission and body, further increasing fuel efficiency. The optimized friction coefficient in the transmission and tire rolling coefficient reduce energy loss caused by mechanical operation. In line with Shanghai GM’s Drive to Green strategy, both engines meet China’s Phase IV emission standard (as well as the Euro IV standard) and can be upgraded to meet China’s Phase V emission standard.
Even though it is classified as a small car, the New Sail ensures a fun driving experience. Its five-speed manual transmission offers smooth gear shifting. The sporty-looking steering wheel provides pinpoint handling and easy control, while the sporty yet solid chassis provides comfort and excellent handling. The driver enjoys maximum visibility courtesy of the New Sail’s large windshield, seats designed for local users and no-blind-spot rearview mirror.
Stylish Exterior, Spacious Interior
Like other vehicles wearing the Chevrolet bowtie, the New Sail is sporty, enjoyable to drive and offers good value for money. The New Sail features Chevrolet’s trademark horizontal split grille with the gold Chevrolet emblem showcased in the middle. Three muscular sidelines provide the car a three-dimensional look. A unique short-in-front, long-in-back suspension brings a sporty edge to the exterior. The streamlined shape of the vehicle adds a dynamic styling element while reducing drag, for lower fuel consumption. The New Sail is initially available in six exterior colors: Crescent Silver, Jasmine White, Sky Blue, Coral Red, Amber Orange and Starfish Blue.
The interior is likewise unique and all Chevrolet. It includes the brand’s twin-cockpit design as well as a flexible, modern central control panel equipped with a radio, CD player and MP3 interface. Designers have added a sporty touch through a double-digital screen and chrome plating. The New Sail’s adoption of a central fuel tank, a short front and rear suspension, and arch-shaped doors maximizes interior space for up to five people. There are 24 interior storage compartments for added convenience.
Advanced Safety
The New Sail is expected to achieve four stars in China New Car Assessment Program (C-NCAP) testing. The New Sail’s safety cage construction with crumple zones offers class-leading passenger protection. A steel frame surrounds the fuel tanks, for added safety. Dual air bags in front, a retractable steering column, antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, child safety locks and a stronger child seat system are standard. The New Sail also offers outstanding pedestrian protection.
Developed in China for Emerging Markets
The New Sail was jointly developed by Shanghai GM and PATAC off a new architecture in accordance with GM’s Global Vehicle Development Process (GVDP) and worldwide standards for engineering and quality. The development team for the New Sail factored in local climate and driving conditions as well as local fuel quality and Chinese driving habits in the new model’s design. The vehicle’s assembly followed the DTS global C-BOB (best of best) standard.
The New Sail was put through more than 2 million kilometers of testing in extreme hot and cold weather conditions.
To ensure that parts and components meet Chevrolet’s international standards in terms of quality, service, technology and price, 95 percent of components were supplied by members of GM’s global supply chain, with more than 40 percent coming from industry-leading component groups or their joint ventures.
GM’s global quality management processes and regulations were also applied in R&D, procurement, quality recognition and manufacturing. Shanghai GM’s paint shop adopted Generation 6 Zero-Emission Painting for the New Sail. The vehicle meets all European Union environmental protection standards in terms of heavy metal proportion and the recycling rate of the full vehicle.
World-class Chevrolet Gold Tie Service will be offered to New Sail buyers by Shanghai GM. Approximately 380 dealers in more than 200 cities across China will offer customers nine free services as well as 24-hour emergency assistance.
According to Shanghai GM President Ding Lei, “Several years ago, Shanghai GM made the strategic decision to broaden our customer base by developing the New Sail. We improved cost efficiency while setting new quality, fuel efficiency and value standards for economical family cars. With the arrival of the New Sail, we now have an entry in every major passenger car segment.”

BigFatGuy 01-12-2010, 10:13 PM Oddly enough, I think that is a car we need in the North American market. Well, north of Mexico. :D We can't seem to get "decontented" vehicles. Manual trans, crank windows, no leather, just a basic transportation vehicle for cheap. Looks nice outside, but I'd expect a newer looking interior.

monnette 08-01-2010, 08:27 AM thanks for the quick post Martin. I think I just go with the lowest variant of
the hatchback. 1.2L MT. With the 58,000 RMB price tag, best car you can get on that price level.
Will head to the nearest chevy showroom this week
to check how it looks and hopefully test drive it.
Never own a hatchback, Do you guys think its better to go 14" tire or just
13"?
Cheers,
Monnette
martin_krpan 08-01-2010, 12:07 PM Take 14'' for better handling and visual appearance.
Rally Red Lancer GTS 08-02-2010, 01:39 AM I agree, with a little pup like this car especially, bigger is definitely better for tire size. Better grip, handling and look for the car overall.

martin_krpan 10-23-2010, 04:10 AM GM China begins exports of Chevy New Sail to Chile
General Motors Co. said Thursday its Shanghai GM joint venture has begun exports of its Chevrolet New Sail, a small family sedan, to Chile and plans to expand such sales to other markets.
Major global automakers are just beginning to use China, the world's biggest vehicle market, as a low-cost manufacturing base for sales in other emerging markets. Demand inside this country has slowed in recent months, easing pressure on automakers to keep up with local orders.
"The New Sail is the first locally developed and manufactured passenger car from an international brand to be exported," Terry Johnsson, Shanghai GM vice president of vehicle sales, service and marketing, said in a statement. "It represents a breakthrough in our strategy to create products for China and other emerging markets."
GM, which holds a 49 percent stake in Shanghai GM, its flagship China joint venture with Shanghai Automotive Industrial Corp., said it plans to sell the car elsewhere in Latin America, North Africa and the Middle East.
The New Sail, which was launched earlier this year, was retooled to suit the Chinese market. About 90,000 were sold in January-September, making it a bestseller for its category, GM says.
GM has exported Chevrolet minivans to Peru and the original model of the Sail to Chile. The company did not provide details on sales or shipments of those models in Latin America, or of its planned sales of the New Sail.
Many local Chinese manufacturers export vehicles, mainly to the developing world but in some cases to Europe and Russia. Volkswagen AG's venture with SAIC has exported the Polo to Australia and Japan's Honda Motor Co. has been successfully exporting its Jazz compact car from China to Europe since 2005.
But so far China has not made much progress in achieving its ambitions to export to major developed markets, such as the U.S. and Europe.

martin_krpan 12-23-2010, 11:21 AM Chevrolet Sail EV Concept Official Press Release:
General Motors Participates in Guangzhou Auto Show
Introduces Sail Electric Concept Vehicle
Shanghai – General Motors is participating in the 2010 Guangzhou Auto Show, which began today, through its Shanghai GM joint venture. Under the theme of "Drive to Green and Leading Innovation," it is showcasing 23 production and concept vehicles. Among the products on display are the Sail electric concept vehicle, which is making its global debut, and the Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric vehicle.
"GM is committed to delivering a range of advanced propulsion technologies and offering a portfolio of solutions that will allow our customers to choose the vehicle that best meets their needs," said Kevin Wale, President and Managing Director of the GM China Group. "GM's expertise in batteries, electric motors and power controls will enable us to provide the best possible choices when it comes to vehicle electrification technologies."
Sail Electric Concept Vehicle
The Sail electric concept vehicle was developed by Shanghai GM and the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) in Shanghai. Based on the Chevrolet Sail that went on sale at the beginning of the year, it is an environmentally friendly small car that is targeted at ordinary Chinese families.
The Sail electric concept vehicle is powered by a lithium-ion battery with maximum output of 65 kW and maximum torque of 220 Nm. It has a maximum speed of 130 km/h and can go up to 150 kilometers on a single electric charge. It uses regenerative braking to produce additional energy. The Intelligent Charging Assisting System maximizes the energy conversion ratio.
Its simple contemporary design is aerodynamic. Inspiration has come from leaves, and is reflected across the exterior. The Sail electric concept vehicle features a simple yet modern interior along with a range of electronic amenities. It has adopted electric vehicle standards for safety set by SAE and ISO.
Chevrolet Volt Extended-Range Electric Vehicle
The Chevrolet Volt is the world's first extended-range electric vehicle that provides the benefits of an electric vehicle without the range limitations associated with other electric vehicles on the market. Powered by GM's revolutionary Voltec propulsion system, it provides maximum torque of 368 Nm, maximum output of 111 kW and a maximum speed of 160 km/h. It can run solely on electric power stored in its 16 kWh lithium-ion battery for up to 80 kilometers without consuming a single drop of petroleum and with zero emissions.
When the battery is depleted, its on-board engine-generator starts producing electricity to drive the Volt another 490 kilometers, giving the Volt a range of up to 570 kilometers. When launched in China in the fourth quarter of 2011, the Volt will be equipped with the OnStar system, which will offer a smart phone application co-developed by Chevrolet and OnStar. Owners will be able to control all vehicle functions and OnStar services on a 24/7 basis.
The Volt has received several awards in North America including Motor Trend 2011 Car of the Year, Automobile Magazine 2011 Car of the Year, 2011 Green Car of the Year from Green Car Journal, and Best Innovation from Popular Mechanics magazine.
"The Sail electric concept vehicle and Chevrolet Volt are examples of industry-leading solutions being developed by GM and our partners globally," said Wale. "GM is also establishing battery electric vehicle demonstration fleets around the world to better understand driving patterns, battery charging, market needs and customer acceptance of electric vehicles. At the same time, GM is investing in start-up companies with innovative ideas to accelerate next-generation electrification technologies."
Other Premieres
Among the production vehicles making their debut in Guangzhou is the new Chevrolet Spark, which takes functionality and environmental friendliness to a new level in the mini-car segment. The new Spark is equipped with a 1.0-liter engine. It offers a personalized interior in line with the demands of younger customers and is priced between RMB 77,800 and RMB 88,800.
Another new car that is making its global debut is the Cadillac SLS 2.0T SIDI, which sets a new performance standard for low-emission luxury business cars. It is the first vehicle in Cadillac's 100-year history to offer a four-cylinder turbocharged engine. It represents the brand's entrance into the 2.0- to 2.5-liter luxury business car segment. Three variants are priced between RMB 388,800 and RMB 488,800.
Making their maiden appearance in Guangzhou are two new models from Buick. The New Regal GS Sport is the newest member of the upper-medium sedan family. It takes driving excitement to a new level with its 2.0-liter turbocharged SIDI engine that generates maximum power of 190 kW and 400 Nm of torque. It has three different driving modes, including the FlexRide adaptive driving system.
The new Buick GL8 luxury MPV, which will reach the market next month, builds on the heritage of the original GL8, China's first family of executive wagons. It features seven innovations and 27 technological breakthroughs along with improvements in design, space and safety, technology, power, features and quality for business users. It comes with a choice of a 3.0-liter V-6 SIDI intelligent direct injection engine or a 2.4-liter Ecotec engine with segment-leading fuel efficiency.
GM's EN-V (Electric Networked-Vehicle) concept, which was a star of the SAIC-GM Pavilion at World Expo 2010 Shanghai, is also appearing on the Shanghai GM stand. EN-V introduces a new automobile DNA based on electrification and connectivity. It represents GM's vision of future urban transportation in which driving promises to be free from petroleum, free from emissions, free from congestion and free from accidents.
