Chinese Cars you Want?
Good question - :) I wonder if this is a valid choice?

What counts as a Chinese car?
Maybe this counts as a multi-national car...

Vitesse

Without old cars, there'd be no new ones.

If you think it looks familiar, that's because it is. The SH-760 is based on the Mercedes "Ponton" generation of the late 1950's:

http://www2.uol.com.br/bestcars/carros/mercedes/antigos/ponton-180d-2.jpg

Even the engine was a direct clone of the Mercedes straight-six. This was all done legally, btw - just as the ZIS was a clone of the old Packard 180.

If you think they all look alike, you haven't been exposed to enough old cars. All cars bear a strong resemblance to others of their era, but in the fifties this was much less so than it is today. A Geely looks not that dissimilar from a Toyota or a Chevy, though it does look different. Even a Ferrari uses the same style of plastic bumpers and molded-in trim as a Geely or a Chery these days - producing a much more generic look than cars of the past.

Is this antique sedan a product of the old Shanghai Tractor Company (current SAIC)or is it a First or Second Auto Works product? It looks like it is parked outside a bank somewhere on the Bund.

I'll take either a FAW-VW Jetta GDF (preferred, but I don't see that happening in the US, so I'd have to illegally import one) or a Chery Flagcloud (I've heard rumors...)

If the Flagcloud had a diesel, it'd win, especially if it comes to the US.

The 1st car that Chery brings to US must be a totally new designed car with ACTECO engin. In Chinese mind, only European likes diesel. So, diesel car export for US might be in long time.

American's don't really oggle for diesel cars, usually because of how espensive and underpowered thry are. Volkswagen currently sells the Jetta with available diesel engine options, but it doesnt sell too well. Then again I may not know what I'm talking about because I really don't know for sure...

As for which Chinese car I'm looking foreward to, I kind of like that ugly, yet cute Chery QQ thing. I kind of like it's unique stying and happy-go-lucky appearance.

The Junjie is around $16,000 for the turbo version and $3,000 less for the earlier version with 1.8 Mitsubishi engine (retail prices in China for luxury models).

I heard Zhongxing Landmark might come to the U.S. on June 2008 for about $13,750 with a "strong minimum 3-year/36,000-mile limited warranty program". I'm just wondering how the after-sale service and parts will be.

Too early to tell the dealers' service quality. I bet you'll be able to buy the parts from ebay. If this car is coming to US, I will get one for sure. $14k will be the cheapest SUV in US. I think they should price it at around $17000.

Quality not quantity.

this is what i want...

the Chinese need to come up with a name that is palatable for the Western audience... Chery, Geely, Gonow... there is no way the west will accept these names. The Americans have had little success with Saturn and Eagle style brands but I feel everyone will accept this more readily than Jiangling or something like that. You may say that the West had adopted Honda and Toyota and Hyundai. That is great. Do you think the Chinese will wait 20-30 yrs for acceptance?

the Chinese probably need to headhunt a German for design. The Koreans and Japanese regularly hire Germans and Italians and French to design world class vehicles.

the Chinese need to strive for 5 star NCAP, Euro IV engines that have the same mod cons as the competition. This means the latest direct injection DOHC 4v turbo diesel or petrol motors.

the Chinese need to prove themselves in motorsport. No one is saying F1 or Rally. What about Paris to Dakar? Something that proves reliability and engineering.

or they can continue shipping D-Max copies to South Africa and Eastern Europe.

the Chinese need to offer Korean style warranty. 5 years, 160,000 miles.

So far, I'd go with the the 2.0 Chery A5 MT. On second thought after I saw the A6 concept. I'd go with that if it comes in manual. 2.0 turbo or 3.0 v6 makes it seem very tunable. the exterior looks pretty cool as well.

No they're pretty bad in my opinion. Interior is terrible, rear seats very small and uncomfortable. The engine might be good though.
