SHANGHAI (XFN-ASIA) - Shanghai GM will launch a new made-in-China Cadillac in November after the automaker resumed production of the cars following a halt in manufacturing earlier this year, the China Daily reported citing a spokesman.

Chen Yanming, a Shanghai GM official, told the paper that the company would resume local production of Cadillacs earlier than expected because of brisk sales of the model.

It has been widely reported that Shanghai GM would not start making Cadillac cars in China until 2007, the paper noted on its website.

'The new Cadillac sedans made in China are to roll into showrooms by November and will be featured at the Beijing Auto Expo this November,' Chen was cited as saying. 'It is a new and real made-in-China Cadillac.'

The new model, yet to be unveiled to the public, is expected to be Cadillac's flagship model in China's luxury car market, the paper said.

Chen told the paper Shanghai GM will start large-scale production of the more upmarket Cadillac model next year.

Shanghai GM is a joint venture between General Motors Corp and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp (SAIC).

GM will also export this car to Middle East countries.

Shanghai General Motors announced that it would start to sell the Cadillac SLS, the lengthened version of the STS luxury sedan, in the Middle East in the first quarter of 2008.

It's the first export deal for the Chinese-made Cadillac, the joint venture automaker, formed by Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp and General Motors Corp, said in a statement.

The SLS went on sale in China starting this March. The car has helped to boost overall Cadillac sales in China by 128 percent in the first nine months of 2007, compared to the same period in 2006.

Shanghai GM will also debut the model at the Middle East International Auto Show in Dubai from November 13 ahead of the official launch. The car maker said the model has passed all road tests.

While Cadillac’s STS will be discontinued in the U.S. in a little over a year, the version General Motors sells in China, the SLS, appears ready to soldier on for a few more model years. A few weeks ago a camouflaged 2011 Cadillac SLS was spotted testing in the United States. Now we’ve just managed to catch a few photos of the SLS with no camo before it made a quick get away down the highway.

This face-lifted Chinese market SLS test cars were just shot undergoing testing in the U.S. These prototypes show the SLS will get a revised front end with a new grille, new headlights and a new lower grille opening. We also see lots of new LEDs in the headlight cluster itself and in the fog lights.

Powertrain changes remain unknown, but we aren’t expecting anything major as the SLS will largely be a carryover item for a single market.

The revised Cadillac SLS will likely hit the Chinese market sometime next year, appropriately coinciding with the launch of the U.S.-spec Buick Regal — one of GM’s best selling cars in the Chinese market.
