Geely LG-1

Geely Automobile, one of the most rapidly developing Chinese car manufacturer introduced its more upmarket LG-1 recently.

The car, which is officially named Geely LG-1 King Kong has been developed with assistance from Korean and Italian companies. Geely claims there were over 1000 engineers from China and abroad summoned for the project.

There are three engine variations: 1.5-, 1.6- and 1.8-liter. Key dimensions are: wheelbase: 2502 mm (98.5-in.), length/width/height: 4342/1692/1435 mm (170.9/66.6/56.5-in.).

I can totally see this car succeed if this is the one coming to the US.

Geely, if you're listening, equip it with the following, standard:

- Side curtain airbags, front and side airbags (total of 6 airbags), 4 wheel disc ABS (to address the #1 concern when people buy cars, SAFETY)

- 10 year warranty on powertrain, 5 year bumper to bumper, 3 year free full maintenance, 10 year free oil change, 5 year free road side assitance (to address the #2 concern, quality/reliability)

- Comfort and conveniences can be optional. People like to have them, but they're not a "concern" per se.

Now keep that starting price under 10K and you have a true winner!!! With gas prices these days, I'd buy one in a heartbeat to commute and run errands.

But I heard the price will be less than 70000 Yuan. I think Geely will meet difficulties to sell it at such a high price, I mean if it will be priced 70000-90000.

It's a Chevy Aveo/Daewoo Kalos/Daewoo Gentra/Pontiac G3 in new clothes, presumably with new engines too, since I don't think there's a 1.8 liter Kalos/Aveo/Gentra.

I think most Americans would see an Aveo as a better bet. I can't imagine that the CK would be preferable to this, however.

The style on the Saturn Aura actually comes straight from the Vauxhall/Opel Vectra from Europe. The Vectra has been around much longer then the Aura.

The Vectra platform also underpins the Saab 9-3, Chevrolet Malibu, and Pontiac G6, which are all sold here in the US.

It doesn't surprise me that Saturn restyled a Vectra for it's flagship, since the departing L-series Saturn was a revised MkII Vectra. The new Aura is quite a bit nicer than the outgoing L.

Just this week GM announced that the Astra will replace the unloved Saturn Ion for 2007. The Ion, which rides an earlier version of the Chevy Cobalt Delta platform, has been a big fat dud all around. We'll be better off with the Astra.

big head and tail lights for a little car dosnt seem to work in my point of view, cars like the caravan and odyssey where the car is big and lights are big would actually work.

Interior looks nice and shows progress on quality but some quality flaws remain.

Best looking Geely I've seen, I like the Opel Astra front :) , the rear is original in design I like it to.

Wow, the interiour doesn't fit the exteriour at all, but it's that unique I really like it.

The side profile and dashboard looks like a Toyota Vios.

The car looks a lot better than most Geely's, but the interior still needs a lot of work.

It looks uglier than sedan to me.

I've just viewed MK today (at Singapore). Not too impressive if compared to other makes...

But if one were to compare it with its previous model the CK, one will find that it is an extreme make-over. However, I still couldn't get over the fact that the interior really feels like a toy car. :(

The King Kong has 2 engine sizes (1.5 and 1.8l) with a base price of 53,000rmb (1.3MT) up to 71,800rmb (the 1.5 with a automatic). Currently there is no auto trans available with the 1.8 engine. The auto trans will ALSO be available with the hatchback as well (note the pics that Martin just posted - it's a 1.5 with a auto in it), it will probably be BELOW 70,000rmb (hatchbacks usually cost less than their 4 door siblings). Good choice for Geely to offer a auto trans with this hatchback - the (Buick) HRV costs about 90,000rmb with a automatic and the (BYD) F3R doesn't offer one at all. I don't know about the upcoming (Brilliance) FRV and whether it will have a automatic available, but for right now Geely has got the lowest priced hatchback with a available auto trans (in this size range). It's also one of the nicest LOOKING Geelys yet (which might not be saying too much, based on earlier models) and if this is a example of the future of Geely, I think it will be a good future for them!!

I prefer the previous version. Now looks the front too much like the Opel Astra. Although in my opinion looks the King Kong sedan much better than the new hatchback.

Geely MK sedan on sale in 21 Russian cities

June 27, 2008 - The first batch of 3,000 Geely MK sedans produced by China's homegrown private automaker Geely Automobile have been put on sale in 25 Geely 4S stores in 21 Russian cities. The "Chinese King Kong" (as Geely MK is called) is expected to reverse the recent sluggish sales of Chinese sedans in Russia.

The Geely MK sedans of different configurations sell in Russia at prices between 319,000 rubles ($13,600) and 369,000 rubles. As the most expensive Chinese sedan sold in 4S stores rather than in outdoors markets, Geely MK will greatly enhance the brand image of Chinese sedans in Russia. Following the Geely MK sedan, Geely FC (Vision) will also go on sale in Geely's 4S stores in the Russian market, which will have three more models of this brand this year, and two more next year.

Red Dragon Company, a member of the largest Russian dealer of imported cars - Rolf Group, will specialize in sales of the Geely brand in Russia and aims to sell 15,000 Geely sedans this year. The Geely 4S stores in Russia will double to 50 by the end of this year. The C-class sedan Geely MK to be sold at the Russian market will come in three configurations - Base, Comfort and Elegance. All cars are going to be equipped with a 1.5-liter engine, 94 hp, which is an in-house development of the Chinese carmaker.

Both the Geely MK and Geely FC meet the Euro ECE and Euro III standards for the Russian market. The Russian government is optimistic about the prospects of China's Geely Auto and hopes that Geely will become of the favorite Chinese auto brands in Russia.

The Zhonghua FRV 1.3 is 1.000 RMB cheaper and the BYD F3R 1.5 costs even the same as the King Kong hatchback. The FRV and the F3R are both a class bigger than the Geely and looks much better (especially the FRV). So who in China would buy a Geely King Kong hatchback with those high prices?

A Western Australian importer who pioneered the importation of Korean cars into Australia has announced that he will import 500 MK hatchbacks into Australia amidst reports of official Geely entry into the Aussie market with the Panda as well as Chery going in by Christmas and supposedly Lifan by September.
Currently, from rumours Great Wall is making a profit in Australia but not so sure about here. I wish Geely and Chery would come here too, but if they follow Great Wall, I'm pretty sure that chance is dead certain.

Great Wall Sailor and Wingle starting to get visible here in Northern Australia where that kind of truck is often a necessity. Price is great for a dual cab 4WD.

This is the KingKong first generation. Second gen. looks better in my view. And its inner decoration, idle sound, shock absorber are also improved compared with the first generation.

I am not sure why they are here. I saw them in a car grooming shed next to a Hyundai dealer and the cars were clearly marked on the windscreen that they were supposed to be here.

The car has VCA on its side, which I believe stands for Vehicle Certification Agency. Apparently this was done in Spain, and the result was a 3.5 to 4 star rating. Does anyone know exactly which agency did this?

Hello Analyst, Vehicle Certification Agency is the UK (Great Britain) Vehicle Type Approval Authority. They do the required tests for EU (European) car admission, for instance according the ECR94 norm (frontal, 56 km/h). They don't do the EuroNCAP tests (frontal 64 km/h).
