The Geely CK is a sedan automobile from Chinese manufacturer, Geely Automobile. Production began in May, 2005. The "CK" name stands for "Freedom Ship" or "Free Cruiser".
The CK holds the distinction of being the first Chinese automobile ever displayed at an American auto show, although it was only shown to the press and not the general public. Geely plans to begin selling the model in Puerto Rico in 2007on the way to beginning sales in America the next year. The CK was also shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2005 along with four other Geely models.
The CK is based on a South Korean design by Daewoo, Tower Metal, Wooshin Systems, and CES, which Geely licensed. Its 1.5 L engine is a Toyota Motor Corporation design, also licensed. It produces 94 hp (70 kW) at 6000 rpm. The automatic transmission is built in China, the first to be manufactured there.

Looks like an 8A-FE. I believe the Haoqing donor, Xiali, used that engine.
From the angle of the photo the intake plenum casting looks uncomfortably close to the firewall rib. It's a tight fit at least.
Interestingly that engine was also used in the Rover's once built by Etsong in Qingdao.

Just for the information
I saw the car in egypt and I was once thinking of buying it
the engine here is a 1.6 not 1.5
the 1.5 sits in the Maple ( same engine )

" 1.6 16V EFI " was written on the gray engine of the ck and it produces 107hp at 6000 RPM .

looks the same as the pics posted by admin

the car is not photogenic from all angles , I mean from the side it looks wierd , from the back it looks like a Toyota Corolla Replica ..

the interior is not that bad like many reporters said on Detroit , In fact I kinda like it , its only the outside that really not going all together well

design wise not build wise ( haven't tested it to post any actual thoughts )

I drived a CK-1 once , but I dont own it
anyways , it feels good , but the engine sounds are wierd , for example when I am on the 1st gear , the engine makes a noise like the same noise any car makes when u are on reverse ...

anyways its full of plasticy stuff , but so is all the cars of the same pirce tag
I just adored the extra features it had ( abs / 6-cd changer / remote / airbags / power mirrors / power windows / headlight height and intensity controler / parking light / parking sensors ) all of the mentioned package are only available for higher class cars here , even my :( crashed palio has only ( ABS , 2 front power windows , parking light ) and misses all of the rest .

These cars look like boxes on wheels! What's the big deal with Geely? Can someone explain? Apart from being cheap, I mean...

Yes, they sell many "cars" to Africa and S. America, but that's obviously markets hungry for cheap automotive products, hardly a "car" by western standards.

40% offset test at only 56km/h!!!
I expect that Geely auto couldn't enter the US and euro market before 2010 because of the lowest safty and quality standard all over the world. Geely auto is the tenth-rate vehicle, I think.

C-ncap gave Geely CK-1 a 4-star rating
http://auto.sohu.com/20061225/n247248097.shtml
:eek: :confused: :confused: :confused:

The topic of this funny report is "CNCAP碰撞四星 自由舰没丢自主品牌的脸“

translation:
碰撞= crash test
四星= 4 stars
自由舰= CK-1
没= not
丢.....脸= lose face
自主品牌= self-branded (auto)

SOHU is one of the largest mass media in China. So,the news and reports on it are believable.

cryptonx

maybe 4 start out of 100

or maybe 4 red stars ... which translates to 1/4 real star !

dragin
12-27-2006, 12:39 PM
Without seeing the full article, here's a guess on that title's translation.

Upon its 4 star rating in the C-NCAP crash test, the self-developed (Geely) Freedom Cruiser avoids a loss of face.

it looks apalling, the interior reaks of cheap plastiv and not much else and the exterior literally does look like a box on wheels, it's suspension is far too high with tyres that look to thin and to me at least they couldn't give this 'car' away!:thumb:

4*real*Made_in_China
12-30-2006, 11:20 AM
I'm not surprised. All car manufacturers were pretty bad up until the late 90's (except Merc, Volvo, maybe a few others).
In europe at least, once the EuroNCAP (www.euroncap.com) was started in the late 90s, car manufacturers started to improve and try to comply better with the standards. I think the C-NCAP will probably do the same thing, it just started, so in a few years we should start to see their safety improve.

CaymanS
01-05-2007, 07:04 PM
I'm not surprised Geely got poor results like this. Geely probably doesn't care about safety. Their motto is strictly 'cheap price'. Geely needs to realize this through the hard way to even get a taste of reality. I doubt that will ever work either. I am very disappointed.

dragin
01-06-2007, 09:26 AM
Geely does care about safety.

But it has launched this car-making enterprise with the idea of making a profit. When it finally recognizes the relationship between profit and safety, and profit and the environment, it will change its ways.

Li Shufu is a smart man. I trust that he will come to this realization before
it's too late.

It is no doubt an embarassment for the students at Geely University to see these photos.

according to shanghaiDaily.com,Chinese cars aren't save enough.
here's the news:

China is catching up, and catching up fast. Since the Chinese NCAP tests were started to test out the safety of vehicles that are going onto the market in China foreign brands have done much better, and Chinese brands haven’t faired so well, actually they’ve done pretty badly. Especially Geely and their ‘Freedom Vessel’

The Free Cruiser sedan developed by Geely Holdings Group, which is expected to be among the first batch of models to be sold in the United States market, got only two stars - the lowest rating - in the China New Car Assessment Program, the China Automotive Technology and Research Center said this week.

The official vehicle inspection laboratory gave three stars to the A5 sedan made by Chery Automobile Co ltd and F3 sedan by BYD Automobile Co Ltd. At the other end of the scale, Toyota’s Crown premier sedan earned a top five-star rating, and the institute gave four stars to Honda’s City and Volkswagen’s Sagitar.

The tests were the first for Chinese-made models under the N-CAP program, an independent crash test drafted by Euro-NCAP, which sets standards in Europe.

I DO like the re-design of this interior.......all the elements seem to work better together. HOWEVER, the fake wood HAS GOT TO GO :nono: :eek: - it is ENTIRELY out of place and makes the Geely seem cheap (and NO jokes about being redundant!!). A company in Honduras got the distribution of Geely, and they are promoting the Geely CK, I had a Chance to view one in a local show and it appears to be a solid Car. good fit and finish, an spacious, considering the car is as small as a Kia Rio. The distributor said that this car has a Toyota based engine. Is that true ? Also, I say the engine bay, and the Radiator assembly is made out of plastic. is it durable? :(

As the radiator assembly made of plastic, it depends. For instance Daihatsu uses this system in many models: Terios, yrv and sirion. And they work just fine. Not just in the first year, but for many years, miles in tough conditions.
It depends on the quality of materials and molding.

Hello,I don't like the wood from the interior;
The gearbox it's made in colaboration whit Antonov or it is a gearbox made by Geely?
Buy the way all the plastic from interior are very very cheep,and the car have some problems whit the front suspensions

There won't be an Antonov Gearbox in any Geely car before the end of 2008. The prototypes still have to be made and tested before we can go into massproduction. There will, however, be a Geely car WITH an Antonov gearbox on some Carshow in Beijing in late 2008, I believe. Does anyone know anything about a timetable, concerning the prototype testing?

Cuongnet is good for something.... he brings us back to one of our favorite subjects: Geely

"Whenver i see one , they look like they are 15 years old ... headlights so foggy ... dirty washed out paint ... and no thats not a single incident ,, all GEELYS tend to look the same ... like they were heavily used for ages."

Cryptonx, the day that Geely gets that pedal cluster to be in alignment, i.e. not cockeyed like the one seen below, will be the day that they move into the world of global quality. I'm afraid that they are all like that, both automatic and manual transmission models, both Geely and Geely Maple.

But as for their bold entry into automatics, I must give them credit. That is a good move and in that respect they are stepping out front among domestic makers.

Hazik you photos are fantastic as usual.

Alby that familiar 4 banger engine was being purchased from Toyota's Tianjin engine operation for a while, and then Geely decided to make it on their own, illegally. Toyota took them to court and I believe the outcome was that Toyota ended up giving them a license to produce it legally.

Another interesting thing is that this CK was built on the same platform as the Geely Haoqing and Meirenbao, and all were derived from the Tianjin Xiali (N3) platform. A look at the unusual firewall indents is the giveaway. But in this case copying a domestic competitor brought no legal challenges.

Some more information about Geely's bad performance at Russia's crash test from Gasgoo.com

Geely's Freedom Cruiser fared very badly in a recent European NCAP crash test organized by Russia automobile magazine Auto Review.

Freedom Cruiser's performance in the crash test was so bad that Russian media dubbed the vehicle as "a death car," which means the drive in the car would have zero chance to survive in a similar crash.

The organizer of this crash test bought the vehicle from a local dealer at 291,500 Rubles ($11,898) and did the test without the knowledge of its maker, China's Geely Automobile.

In the frontal offset crash, the first-row seating is compressed into half size, which leaves the occupants zero chance to survive. The car also got a zero-score regarding protection of thighs, legs and ankles of the dummy.

The speed is 64.1km/h, which is stricter than 53km/hour in a standard Russian crash-test. Before Geely's test, other Chinese automakers also fared badly in crash tests organized by Auto Review. Chery Qiyun-also known as Amulet in Russian, Brilliance BS6 earned very low ratings in previous tests.

"We choose Geely's Freedom Cruiser to conduct the crash test because this car is a popular model in Russian market," the crash test's organizer Auto Review said. "And Geely's partner in Russia Inkom-Avto Group, Russia's leading auto dealer, campaigned aggressively for this car in Russian market."

Geely started assembling cars in Russia since last year. With aggressive marketing by Inkom-Avto Group, it plans to increase its local sales to 30,000 units this year from 8000 units last year.

In our national market which is Egyption market . we have many chinese cars , and at Automech Akhbar El Yom 2008 which is a big car fair we have seen many new geely cars like : Panda , MK hatchback & FC , and we have seen for the second time in Egypt the small sedan CKII which reminds you with the Geely Merie , it has the front of the old C-Class and the end of the CKI , its equipped with many options but it doesn't have air bags , it has a 1.5 L engine releases 95 hp & its the only car in its segment which has automatic transmission with the choice of manual one , its priced about 66.000 EGP so its cheap .

An 'interesting' amalgam of styles.

From the quarter panel back it's a 1989 Hyundai Sonata.
The dash is from a late 70s Volksawagen Passat (pretty cool i think actually).
Back is a Daewoo Lacetti sedan.
Bangle-style headlights, with a 1970s XJ Jaguar treatment on the bonnet (?).

To anyone who like to drive so fast, recklessly (thinks he's a qualifies F1 driver) and expected to end up in a crash.... this car is definitely NOT for you.

Cheer up everyone... think positive and drive safely to avoid crash.

Fast cars = crashed cars = Junk cars. I've seen lots of branded luxury cars crash in accident & many drivers/passengers die in them.

Have not seen a Geely accident yet.

Geely CK1 scores zero stars at Latin NCAP test

New Car Assessment Programme or NCAP is a body aimed at consumers which focuses on the assessment and evaluation of the passenger safety aspects of new vehicles. There are currently 6 NCAP programs in the world: US NCAP, Euro NCAP, Japan NCAP, Korean NCAP (South Korea), China NCAP and Australasian NCAP.

Latest to join the bunch is the Latin NCAP which focuses on most popular cars sold in Latin America and the Caribbean.

One of the first cars they tested was a Geely CK1 and oh boy were they really disappointed. The car scored – wait for it – 0 ratings for its safety. To put is simply, if you are in the car and you are heading towards a barrier or a tree, you might as well say your last prayers.

The Geely CK1 that was crashed tested came fitted with a 1.3L petrol LHD with no airbags and the result was that the car’s body shell crumpled and rendered the A-pillar, steering column and pedals useless.

The other cars that were tested were

* Toyota Corolla XEI
* Chevy Meriva GL Plus
* FIAT Palio ELX 1.4 (with and without airbags)
* VW Golf Trend 1.6 (with and without airbags)
* Peugeot 207 Compact 5p 1.4 (with and without airbags)

Facelift?
Instead the CK needs a face replacement and more. It's disastrous NCAP results made it lose face and Geely can't afford that. At least not in light of its latest acquisition prize.
Also in my opinion, the arrangement of the grille bars was poorly done from the getgo.

Geely urgently needs some new (completely new, not just refreshed) cars. It's time for CK, MK, Vision and all SMA models to retire once and for all.

What happened to those 39 concepts introduced at Beijing auto show? Only Emgrand EX7 SUV is ready for production.

PGMJ
01-21-2011, 08:31 PM
Such is a real pity. Some of those concepts are among the most promissing chinese cars. I'm thinking especially about the Gleagle GS coupe (much nicer than the China Dragon), the Englon TXN or the Gleagle GP5 and GX5. Not to mention the Emgrand Tiger GT, which could boost chinese-made cars image abroad like the cool Toyota 2000GT made to japanese automotive industry in the late 1960's.
