Ash is right....The Hisoon for example has a Toyota 8A-FE based 1.3 litre
four cylinder. After a suit brought by Toyota in 2003, Geely somehow won the rights to build it in house as the MR479Q. Geely had previously bought this engine (also found in the Geely CK) from Tianjin Industrial (home of Xiali) which is licensed by Toyota.

Geely is juggling more than a few projects. It even has one in Hong Kong and so it's hard to say where Maple is going. As you may know Li Shutong's Maple Auto started with the production of Meilu in a venture with Jiangbei Machinerey up north and then moved down to Shanghai in 2003. Some said that the idea of making Citroen-based models was to cut production costs by sourcing from the already established Dongfeng-Citroen suppliers. Now it will be interesting to see what exclusive IPR comes from Maple's collaboration with Tongji University and the Shanghai Innova design house.

btw the in-house engine maker I mentioned above is called the Shanghai Maple Engine Co.,Ltd. It makes both the MR and JL series engines.

Hello from Eastern Europe!!! As I got some informations, the sales of SMA should start soon in some balkan countries such as Bosnia and Bulgaria. Since I live in this area I'm very interested in any information about those models.I've seen pics, but does anyone has any real informations about reliability of SMA vehicles, engines, are there any troubles with engines, how is with the safety of these vehicles??? and the SMA brand is supposed to be a little better quality than the geely cars, like more standard features

why you ask so much about quality??? it's toyota engines,you know about toyota,all vehicles have abs,ebd,dual airbags,geely is start to sell in serbia soon,also i know for the plans in the countires of former yugoslavia
i drive all models from gelly,merie models are so good (they are selling in china only i think) but the city crusier,and beauty leopard are good cars

I think this is a Shanghai Maple but I'm not 100% sure. Anyway it looks relatively modern.

It is correct, Raul, it is the Marindo 506. The wheelbase is 10 cm longer than the original Maple platform (ZX-copied platform, yes, Hater, Citroën infringed Maple), it is now 2640 mm. The car is also named Maple MB.

SHANGHAI, China — Shanghai Maple, the "upscale" arm of Geely Automobile, has introduced a new model called F50, aimed specifically at women.

Not surprisingly, the four-door hatchback, which appears to be an update of the Maple Hisoon, appears to have much more in common, stylistically, with the old Citroën ZX than it does with the Ferrari F50.

That hasn't stopped the Shanghai Maple PR machine from churning out such blandishments as: "F50 is the first car special for female in China. It is designed in a refining and humanization style. F50 possesses the flamboyant and shining shape with soften cuneiform front. The mellow great griller with the glittering and translucent headlamps makes the vehicle charming and attractive. It is just for the ladies who want to live a delicate life with high quality and happiness."

Despite the hype and positioning, the Maple F50 is an utterly conventional compact, powered by a DOHC 1.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 93 horsepower and 94 pound-feet of torque. The company claims the car has a top speed of 99 mph and returns better than 47 mpg.

Perhaps as an extra inducement for women, Maple is offering such exterior color choices as Tiramisu Yellow, African Mum Yellow, Ice Mountain Blue and Jade White.

Best of all, the F50 comes equipped with such supposedly female-pleasing features as "tissue box, coin box, dressing mirror, shoe box, clothes rack and child seat."
