Rumor has it that the above car is set to be priced at 55,000rmb or lower, and will be made by GM-SAIC-Wuling! The mini car certainly looks to have a little bit of Roewe 550 design features around the front end, especially the lights, but the rest of the design appears to be totally fresh metal. SAIC-GM-Wuling is a three way joint venture based in Liuzhou, Guangxi, this JV was essentially producing small kei style vans, MPV’s and light trucks, but also produced the Chevrolet Spark as well. This little sedan is going to sell well at the prices mentioned, (no more than 55k RMB) and the engine specifications are supposed to be set at around 1.2l.

The above vehicle is still without a name, but its expected to go against the Brilliance FRV, JAC A137, and the Chang’an V101.

Wuling’s Sedan to be Branded Baojun

SAIC-GM-Wuling makes minivans and the Chevrolet Spark. SAIC-GM wants Wuling to become an entry-level brand so it needs more cars to sell. Wuling showed a concept sedan called ‘Demo Car’ on a dealer show in 2009, wearing Wuling-badges. But it seems the new sedan will hit la market with a different brand name, not Wuling but Baojun. Info on the logo and name leaked from ‘China Trademark Net’, a website where companies can register trademarks.

Baojun, 宝骏, means ‘Treasure Spirited-horse’. If Baojun becomes the brand then the car still needs a name. Earlier we heard the Demo Car was to be called Wuling GP5, it now could become Baojun GP5.

SAIC-GM-Wuling reveals new passenger car name

The SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) joint venture has revealed the name of its first passenger car under the Baojun brand – the Baojun 630. The new model, based on the Buick Excelle, will enter production at the company’s Liuzhou facility in Guangxi, China, on 18 November.

The initial digit of the sedan’s name refers to its model series, the second digit refers to its body type and the final digit refers to its being the earliest generation of the Baojun brand. SGMW plans to launch a new Baojun model every year over the next several years. Its future Baojun line-up will include traditional passenger cars, SUVs and MPVs.

SGMW is currently setting up a network of Baojun dealers across China. Until now, it has specialised in mini commercial vehicles, producing a range of Wuling-branded mini-trucks and mini-vans, as well as the Chevrolet Le Chi mini-car. Earlier this year it announced it would launch a range of passenger cars under the Baojun brand, but didn’t reveal the name of any models. Baojun is the Chinese word for 'treasured horse'.

November 18 will also mark the eighth anniversary of the establishment of SGMW. Last year, the joint venture formed by GM China, SAIC and Wuling Motors became the first manufacturer in China to top sales and production of 1 million vehicles in a single year.

AIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co., General Motors' mini commercial vehicle joint venture in China with SAIC Motor and Liuzhou Wuling Automobile, has officially rolled out its first self-developed sedan, Baojun 630 on November 22.

The Baojun 630 looks quite similar with the previous GP50 concept car except some changes to its rear section, like rear window and rear lights, etc., which makes the front more prominent, especially the logo.

Three engines will be available in the Baojun car - a 1.5L four-cylinder engine with dual overhead cams, code-named B15D, a VVT (Variable Valve Timing) engine based on the B15D and a 1.8L naturally aspirated gasoline engine with VVT, dual overhead cam and variable intake manifold systems.

In terms of transmission, the Baojun 630 will be equipped with two 5-speed manual transmissions and one 6-speed automatic transmission: the D16, SH17 and GF6.

As a compact sedan, the Baojun 630 is well positioned to rival Shanghai GM's Excell, and expected to be sold for less than 100,000 yuan ($15,000), likely between 65,000 yuan and 95,000 yuan. The lower prices will allow the car to compete better with other domestically made compact sedans.

Shanghai GM's Baojun 630 to be delayed

Production of the Baojun 630, Shanghai GM Wuling's first own brand vehicle, will be delayed, official sources told the Chengdu Evening News today. The Baojun 630 made its debut at April's Shanghai automobile exhibition Auto Shanghai 2011.

Chengdu-based Lingtong Jiachi, while unable to confirm a specific date, has already begun undergoing training for introducing the new brand. Its clear to see that the clock has already counting down on the new brand's official market debut. "I personally believe [the 630] will hit the market on July 18," Dealer President Wu Yan said. The date would mark the one-year anniversary of the annoucement of the Baojun brand.

Some analysts believe that the late release of the Baojun is due to ever decreasing sales during April and May, as well as cool market response to the release of Guangqi Honda's rival own brand model Everus S1. Other anaylsts are putting down the delay to Shanghai GM reevaluating the car's market position.
