"China Geely Group is a private company which was set up by Li Shufu. First products were refrigerators, then motorcycle parts. By obtaining a minivan maker the company got the necessary permissions to produce motor vehicles. It was the first Chinese private enteprise which ventured into the car manufacturing business. The first car was introduced in 1998. Using the Xiali TJ7300, the local version of the Daihatsu Charade as a donor and bolting a Mercedes-like grille the Merrie hatchback was created. A mere 200 cars were sold in the first year.

Slowly but steadily the company has expanded. In August, 2002 they acquired Shanghai-based Jmstar Group, owned by Li's younger brother Li Shutong

In November, 2002 the limousine version of the Haoqing was introduced and a Geely sportscar, called the Beauty Leopard was introduced in 2003. The latter gained world-wide fame with built-in karaoke equipment.
Geely produced 38888 cars in 2003, including 32667 Haoqing models. Their new subsidiary, Shanghai-Maple, based on the former JMStar works made 6297 Huapu models.

Today the company is a holding entity, Geely Automobile Holdings limited with its principal manufacturing base in Beilun Economic and Technological Development Zone, Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, while the Haoqing is being built in Linhai, Taizhou. Geely is now listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange, exported some cars to Syria and now they are developing new models in collaboration with Daewoo International of Korea, Maggiora of Italy and Ruecker of Germany."

Interview with Li Shu Fu, the CEO of Geely from China Car Times.

The below interview of Li Shu Fu, the CEO of Geely, was interviewed by Sina Auto Channel. The translation was carried out by CCT.

Geely Wants To Make the Best Car In The World

Sina: The automobile environment has changed drastically, the competition is getting stronger and strong, what will Geelys next step be?

Li Shu Fu (LSF): Now we need to rely on our technology. With regards to world automotive technology levels, they have over 100 years of development, experience, direction, and scope. We need to follow this development plan and make breakthroughs in the area of safety, environmental aspects, economy area etc. If we make breakthroughs in these areas we will never look back. We need to be the leader in all areas, we need to have the most environmentally friendly car, the most economical, and the safest car, this is what we are persueing.

Why did you develop BMBS? (Blowout Management Buggery Service)

LSF: We developed a world class BMBS system, its when you’re driving at speed and suddenly your tyre blows out we’ve put a safety barrier in there. The worlds automotive companies have been looking for a solution to blow outs for a long time, in over a years nobody was able to solve this problem. We believe that its impossible for tyres not to explode, tryres exploded and then fix themselves is not science. No matter if you drive fast, 180kph, or 200kph, our research was based around keeping the car stable so as to avoid crashes and incidents.

Sina: What is the concept behind ‘Electronic Balancing’? Why does Geely believe this is important technology?

LSF: Our electronic balancing is similar to super hybrid power, this is a superior technology. From next year, our Yuan Jing model will perhaps use this new technology. We plan to use this new technology in Beijing, no matter how steep the road is, the car will use around 3l of fuel per 100km of travel. This technology takes the energy from burning fuel, and turns it into stored electrical energy, which can then be used to propel the car, this car has zero waste.

Sina: Geely has factories in many Chinese cities what factors come into choosing a factory location, and what is your global stratergy?

LSF: In the Eastern part of China, we have factories in Shanghai, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Lu Qiao, and in Jinan (Shandong province) we have bought a piece of land for a future factory. In central China we have built a large factory in Hunan province, thats big enough to produce 100,000 cars. In the future, our midrange cars will be produced there, or Hunan and Ningbo factories will both produce mid range cars, our Jinan factory will mid range high class cars, these will be 2.4l and above, and will measure 4.8m and up. This car will be a luxury car, and will be totally self developed to fight against the Honda Accord, and the Toyota Camry.

In 2006, Geely built a factory in Malaysia to assemble CKD kits for the local market. Later, the Malaysian government changed their policies as they believed Geely would affect their local brands, such as Proton and Lotus. We moved that factory to Indonesia. In Ukraine, we also have a CKD operation where we build the freedom vessel, and the King Kong model. In North America, we have plans for an operation in Mexico, we have a large scope for North America, we plan to sell 300,000 cars in that continent.

Sina: We havent heard much about your partnership with Manganese Bronze, what is happening there?

LSF: We are the largest share holder in a joint venture with Manganese Bronze to produce the London taxi in China. The JV is between Shanghai Maple, and Manganese Bronze. Our taxis have already been delivered for Olympic use in Beijing, we signed over 30 cars to aid in helping disabled guests move about the capital. The most iconic taxi in the world is being used in Beijing, and furthermore, its a Geely product.

Re: Geely introduction...

Shame.

Slovenian company made crime in Bosnia. Using e-banking picked all money from Bosnian daughter-company. Bosnian importer of SMA cars closed in deep doubt.
Slovenian owner of company stopped any communication.
Owners of SMA cars are without warranty and necessary spare parts.

Big cheat will be very god advertisement for Geely and SMA in Europe market, especialy in Balkan(Bosna is part of Balkan).

How it usually goes now all the real crazy.
While the company AVTOCOM (Slovenia and Bosnia) worked on the official web site of SMA-International as a country in which exports stood and Slovenia. Thus they are buyers in Bosnia who were Internet users in some way were convinced that after dealing with the car really stands Maple SMA. After the owners of firms in Slovenia, made fraudulent and bankrupt, the owners of SMA cars were fired in Bosnia deceived.
After all manegement of SMA claims that the SMA has no idea from where Maple in Bosnia and Slovenia, although the accounts/bill are accompanied cars in Slovenia is the company logo SMA and customs papers as an exporter of SMA.
It would all be accepted as customer fraud in Bosnia, the state irrelevant and at the end of the world, that on Monday 24 May 2010 is not in Sarajevo delegation arrived from Sweden to investigate the fraud that was committed by the auspices of Geely.
We are waiting for the outcome.

Re: Geely introduction...

Hey -- since the BL coupe is no longer in production, can anyone tell me if Geely offers built-in karaoke machines (either as standard equipment or as an option) on any of its current model offerings? This information would be greatly appreciated . . .

Here is the relevant official document:

http://www.geelyauto.com.hk/core/files/announcement/en/LTN20160725616.pdf

Car News China is right and partially wrong at the same time. In the above document, see the diagram on page 7. For the explanations of the shareholding entities, see pages 16-19.

Simply speaking, Zhejiang Geely Holdings (the overall parent) now owns 45% of the JV company "Ninghai Zhidou" whereas the original Zhidou entities (the other partner) own 55% collectively in the JV. This would make Zhejiang Geely the minor shareholder with 45%, but simultaneously it is the largest shareholder with 45% because the Zhidou entities actually consist of 7 parties (6 companies and one individual), none of whom owns a stake bigger than Zhejiang Geely Holdings. Of course, collectively the Zhidou parties might have a bigger say in the company due to combined voting rights.

Note that Zhejiang Geely Holdings is the parent of Geely Automobile Holdings. GAH originally held 45% (through 2 subsidiaries) but transferred this stake to its parent ZGH in 2016.

Note "Ninghai Zhidou" does not manufacture cars. It owns "Lanzhou Zhidou" which is in charge of operating and modernizing the main Zhidou car-making plant (originally operated by Geely).

According to a chinadaily.com article of June 27 of last year:
"Geely Automobile Holding has opted to sell its interests in micro-sized electric carmaker Zhidou, to enable the company to operate as an independent entity as a prerequisite to get listed in the nation's new energy vehicle catalog."

I believe the listing mentioned refers to obtaining the much coveted license to produce battery electric vehicles. Zhidou received that license this year according to Reuters.

http://www.reuters.com/article/brief-china-approves-electric-vehicle-pr-idUSB9N1G801M

In 2014 Geely apparently invested 330RMB in revamping its plant in Langzhou (Gansu Province), as DMitra mentioned, to enable Zhidou to reach the production level required to obtain that license.
