I am LOVING it, even though they could have been a bit more imaginative with the interior. A modern looking sedan with a dashboard from 1986-not too good but let's hope they change it. Still, I wouldn't have said all those awful things about the 9-5 had it looked like this. It's fantastic!

I wonder what the phrase for "torque steer" is in Chinese?

The interior is not from 1986! It was developed under the financial constraints that GM allowed it to be in. It was so plasticy because GM's "Traits" in build quality had set in quickly.

C71

It looks very modern. Considering the platform is 14 years old (since launcg) its actualy older.

BAIC to distribute Saab cars in China

From China Car Times:
Quote:
As well as buying old Saab platforms, Beijing Automotive Industry Corporation (BAIC) has gained the rights to distribute Saab vehicles in China. It is still unclear how exactly BAIC plans to distribute Saab vehicles in China, if they plan to set up a new Saab dealership network totally devoted to Saab, or use its existing dealership network that already deals in Mitsubishi, Jeep and Chrysler products under one roof nationwide.

Saab has never performed extremely well in China with only a smattering of dealers in Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu, as at the time Shanghai-GM were more focused on promoting the Cadillac brand in China and also Buick as a semi luxury brand, thus Saab fell by the wayside in China.

Saab arrived in China in 2002 with high hopes for a soon to be burgeoning market, however sales failed to lift off and by 2008 yearly sales were at just 800 units for the whole country. Under Sypker and BAIC stewardship, Saab China is now aiming to sell 5000 units in 2011 when they finally return to China at the end of the year, and Saab will be aiming at the premium car segment where Audi, BMW and Mercedes rule supreme. As reported before on CCT, Saab plans to sell 5000 cars in the first year in business in China, which is set to account for 10% of their global sales.

Ive also heard this story. It has been denied by Saab Automobile AB and Spyker Cars NV. There are no co-operations between Saab and BAIC other than the old 9-5 and 9-3. No distribution agreements or confirmation of talks yet.

Wouldn't think so. BAIC would have to sign a joint venture and at this moment, I don't think Saab would have the money to invest in a JV at this present time.

KiwiGuy

Im afraid that your thoughts that Saab could not afford to be involved in joint ventures is unjustified.

Infact Saab is one of only a few car makers that actualy have money in their bank account! (partly due to the sale of the old 9-5 and 9-3 to the Chinese and also because of the EIB loan)

Saab are apparently in talks with BMW as we speak over possible joint powertrain developments and perhaps even platform development ventures. I have heard through the grape vine that Saab's top people have been in Munich this week talking about something.

Saab are extremly busy with restocking the world of Saab cars following the great 2009 drought of quality automobiles (also known as the Great Saab Drought of 2009) whereby GM almost fully depleated Saabs stocks by shutting down the factory early and sacking workers.

Saab have in the past month emlpoyed more than 100 people in Trollhatten to build the ever expanding lineup. Being the 9-3 range, SportSedan, SportCombi, Convertible and 9-3x as well as the all new 9-5 Sedan

These important models are all destined for the United States or Europe with Canada a close third. The rest of the world will have to wait until these markets are up and running. There are only about 600 of the new MY2010 9-5 Sedan coming to the US.

Saab, under Spyker, are producing between 150-200 cars per day. Last year GM had them on one shift building 100 per day.

Saab-Spyker have taken a new cost effective approach to inventory (execpt in the US). Saab will now only offer a couple of demonstrators to dealerships and then build to order. That way Saab know that every car going down the line has a home to go to and wont sit in inventory lots for 12 months then get sold for cheap.

It is my guess that Saab will get involved with BAIC in the next few years in the way of distrubution perhaps.

As for NZ and Australia, we are probably on the list next to Asia in terms of priority. Im very postive that Australia is important to Saab. They have in the past sold more than 1000 cars a year there. In Australia Saab have 24 dealers. The 9-3 Convertible between 1997-2006 outsold BMW and Audi converts 3 to 1. Infact in 1.9TID form its the most efficient convertible of any class in Australia.

I have written far more than I intended but I havnt spoken for a while. Theres your updates guys.

More on the story of Saab being in talks with BMW

Saab is said (from a reliable source) to be in talks with BMW about getting engines and platforms from its Mini division to make the all new Saab 92 or 9-2 (name not confirmed). Sources say best case the 92 or 9-2 will be out by 2013 but more likely later.

There is SO MUCH happening at Saab as of right now. The production line cannot keep up with demand. Dealers around the world are sitting empty. Saab is only building for North America and Europe as of late. The all new 9-5 Sedan goes on sale in US next month!

New Saab 9-3x is on sale in US and Europe now! Already doing well in Europe.

All new 9-4x will be launched next year closely followed by the all new 9-5 SportCombi.

Fun times ahead.
