Zhongxing exports 500 pickups to Myanmar

November 27, 2008

Shanghai, November 27 (Gasgoo.com) Hebei Zhongxing Automobile Co., Ltd clinched a deal with Myanmar's industry department to export 500 pickups in KD units to the country, the Chinese pickup and SUV manufacturer was quoted as saying by domestic media on Wednesday.

The pickups will mainly be used by the Myanmar government and its officials, with a minority of them being sold to local people. The company said it will deliver another 1,000 units to the Myanmar market by March 2010.

Zhongxing has been expanding by leaps and bounds at oversea markets since the beginning of this year. In January its first KD plant in Jordan broke ground and then in June, its first SUV rolled off the production line at its assembly plant in Egypt, jointly built with its local partner Automotive Gate (AG).

And afterwards, Polish carmaker Pol-Mot Holding rolled off the first batch of Zhongxing vehicles, the Grand Tiger in September. The annual output is expected to reach 1,500 units at that facility. The launch was soon followed by another deal with Libya on October 20 to export 5,000 pickups to the country.

The pick-up manufacturer is forecast to sell 20,000 vehicles outside China by the end of this year, an increase of 80-100% from a year earlier.

Zhongxing to make sedan on Steve platform.

Quote:
December 26, 2008 - After Chamco Auto (China American Cooperative Automotive Co.) and its subsidiary ZX Auto North America International got entangled in a bankruptcy case, two members from the Chamco directorship have moved to join Zhongxing Auto, sina.com said recently.

Zhongxing Auto, a manufacturer of pickup trucks and SUVs in northern China, will make sedans on the Steve platform developed by one of the Chamco directors.

According to a top executive of Hebei Zhongxing Auto, former Fiat N. America executive and Chamco CEO Mario Ferla has entered the Chinese pickup and SUV company as its chief financial officer (CFO), and Chamco's standard technology developer Steve Saleen is planning to have his company join hands with Zhongxing Auto, allowing the latter to build sedans on the Steve sport car platform.

Zhongxing Auto president Xiao Wei said that the company will first launch a sport car made by Steve rather than a sedan. Zhongxing will build passenger vehicles, including the CUV, SAV and MPV, on the Steve platform. These vehicles will perform better than Zhingxing's previous SUV models in that they will deliver greater speed and more purposes in addition to big power and big torque.

In the future, Zhongxing Auto will develop its own-brand sedan models to target the mid- and high-end auto markets. "Our sedans will not sell cheap," said Xiao.

ZX Auto North America International is a joint venture between Chamco Auto and Zhongxing Auto. In August, Zhongxing sent a letter to its lawsuit-entangled U.S. partner, asking for termination of their contract signed in January 2006, but Chamco responded that Zhongxing's decision to quit the deal failed to meet contractual requirements and was invalid.

China's ZX Auto Reveals Latest Mexico Production Plans

ZX Auto (Hebei Zhongxing) of China has signed a deal to manufacture cars or light buses in the Mexican state of Baja California. The arrangement was signed in China last month between ZX Auto and the governor of the Mexican state. It is the latest in a string of attempts by this and other Chinese automakers to get production going in Mexico.

In 2006 ZX Auto had plans to build a facility in Tijuana to produce SUVs and pickups, which would have made it the first Chinese company to set up operations in Mexico. The next year, the company moved the plant's prospective location to Saltillo in northeast Mexico, incorporated a new U.S. company named CHAMCO (China America Cooperative Automotive) and sold dealership rights throughout Mexico. The whole plan was eventually canceled after fraud allegations against the leadership of CHAMCO came to light, harming the Chinese manufacturer's momentum in Mexico.

Earlier this month, Baja California Governor José Guadalupe Osuna Millan disclosed ZX Auto's investment plans, which are projected to amount to some $400 million and employ 1,400 people. Annual production volume is said to be near 200,000 units. ZX Auto would partner with Mexican Grupo FEMA, a local chain of Ford dealerships and a real estate developer.

The projections are highly optimistic considering that ZX Auto sold only 6,000 vehicles last year in its considerably larger home market of China. At least for the first few years, exporting the Mexico-built autos to the U.S. won't be an option because of the need to meet regulations first. But the plant's location close to the U.S.-Mexico border clearly sets the longer-term priorities of the company.

The models to be produced have not been announced, although the information at the news conference that buses would be manufactured seems unlikely. It would make more sense for ZX Auto to bring over models that the company currently sells in China and South America, such as the Landmark SUV, the Admiral pickup, and perhaps the Cruiser CUV.

Baja California is also the place where Toyota produces its Tacoma truck. The Japanese company's supply network in the area would be critical for this project. Fiscal incentives from the Mexican government and the attractiveness of Mexico's trade agreements are also encouraging the Chinese automaker to commit resources to this area.

Before this it seems we had a long dry spell of no news about Zhongxing. When U.S. partner CHAMCO died we heard a few rumblings about possible tie-ups with Chang'an, FAW and GM but nothing ever became of them. The earlier tie-up with Huaxiang Fuqi was short lived.

And then we heard from Vice President Su about the plans to build a crossover in the newly opened plant in Changchun, but that never materialized. So now the question is can Zhongxing keep afloat with these few outdated models of SUV and pickup?

Apparently Zhongxing does have an active export and overseas assembly agenda. Transplant locations are in Russia, Egypt, Jordan, Vietnam and Poland. Zhongxing even has a couple of old CHAMCO executives on their staff.

The old Changchun Chanlin website is gone and the ZX website doesn't tell us much about future plans. But I would love to know how, with sales last year of only 6,000 units in China, can Zhongxing invest $400 million in Mexico.

N.B. One piece of good news from the ZX website in November was that in the first half:

...... in Taiwan, the Weihu (Grand Tiger pickup) sold like hot cakes......

Here' s a bit more of an update on Zhongxing from Chinatrucks.com dated last summer. It takes issue with that unusually low 2008 sales figure of
6,000, quoted above by gasgoo.

Chamco COO heads to ZX Auto, eyes sales in 40 countries
2009-08-18 09:59:48 Author: Keyword:ZX Auto sales

The chief operating officer at would-be distributor Chamco Auto has left the company to join ZX Auto and is aiming to expand sales into 40 countries.

Thomas Del Franco joined ZX Auto in July 2008 as general manager of global sales at its subsidiary ZX International. He is based in Baoding, Hebei province.

ZX Auto, known formally as Hebei Zhongxing Automobile Co., is a small maker of pickups and SUVs. Last year, it sold 38,633 vehicles.

The company is currently expanding annual capacity at its plant in Changchun to 80,000 units by mid-2009, from 30,000 units today. The company's main plant in Baoding has annual capacity of 55,000 vehicles.

Del Franco says his goal is extending ZX Auto's reach into 40 countries, "with the last expansion to come into North America, where a full subsidiary will be formed."

Del Franco was chief operating officer at China American Cooperative Automotive Co., the North American distributor known as Chamco, from 2007 until July 2008.

Chamco was placed under a legal custodian in April by a New Jersey court amid a tangle of lawsuits. More than a dozen executives have since resigned.
