Great Wall assembles Hover and Wingle in the Philippines

Quote:
Great Wall Motor has started assembling vehicles in the Philippines, making it the first Chinese automaker to do so. The assembly plant is a joint venture between Great Wall and its domestic vehicle distributor Statemotor Corp.

The plant has a capacity of 10,000 vehicles a year, and will roll out Great Wall’s Hover SUV and Wingle pickup truck. If its venture with Manila based Statemotor goes smoothly, Great Wall will also proceed to assemble its Voleex sedan in the ASEAN country, a company spokesman revealed. By the way, the Hover scored a surprising 4-star crash test rating in the Australasian NCAP.

In 2010, Great Wall’s total sales exceeded 390,000 units, including 50,000 overseas sales. This year, the Baoding based carmaker aims to up sales to 500,000 units, including 70,000 overseas sales. News reports state that Great Wall operates CKD plants in Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia as well, although we’ve yet to hear anything about that. We have however seen the Wingle undergoing testing in Malaysia.

Will the brand kick start operations in Malaysia this year and join counterparts Chery, Changan and Jinbei in the quest to seek acceptance from Malaysians? We’ve seen that low pricing can sway carbuyers – the Chery Eastar MPV found over 2,600 buyers in 2010 (more than the Toyota Rush and Fortuner) while the Era Jinbei is fast gaining popularity as an affordable passenger van.

Great Wall Motors' assembly plant in Philippines started full production in January 2011, which means that the Great Wall became the first Chinese auto manufacturer having entered the Philippines market in KD form. It is learned that other Chinese auto brands such as Chery, Foton and Lifan are also in the Philippine market side by side with the Great Wall Motors. However, their products in the market are all foreign-built vehicles rather than locally assembled ones.

Great Wall Motors and its agent in Philippines, State Motor Companysigned an agreement on December 27, 2009. The assembly operation was approved officially by the Philippine Investment and Development Committee on July 28, 2010. It took only six months from the application for approval and preparations to realizing the full assembly production. It is learned that the assembly plant has an annual production capacity of 10,000 vehicles, and the first batch of product assembled there was the Great Wall HAVAL H3 and WINGLE 3. If the cooperation goes well at the initial stage, the Great Wall Motors will also introduce its VOLEEX to the Philippines market for local assembly and marketing.

Great Wall Motors was among the first Chinese auto brands into the international market. Its export operation has been in the leading position in terms of volume and value, and established reputation in abroad market. In contemporary auto market, the after-sales service is another important consideration for consumers besides the price and quality of automobile products. For this reason, the State Auto Company in Philippines will provide sufficient and complete after-sales service according to current local standards to ensure the stable market share inPhilippines, as well as the satisfaction of local consumers. The Great Wall Motors has been striving for improving the quality of after-sales services and increasing the supply of parts in overseas markets to meet the demand of local consumers. It has also established an after-sales service network with sufficient coverage to facilitate the maintenance and repairing operation. By doing so, the brand image of Great Wall Motors has been well established in overseas markets.

Apart from Philippines, the Great Wall Motors has currently established KD assembly plants in countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia. It has also initiated whole-unit marketing in countries including Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Brunei. Moreover, the Great Wall Motors will continue searching for active and reliable approaches to gradually open up the ASEAN market. It is planning on building up five production bases in ASEAN by the year 2015.

Haval SUV Car of the Year Malaysia
Quote:
On November 25, 2011, the Malaysia’s “Car of the Year”, supported by Malaysian Automobile Association and held by the local famous magazine New Straits Times and Maybank, the Malaysia’s largest bank, released the results. On the 16-item list of the cars of the year, Haval SUV of Great Wall Motors was highly praised by the organizing committee and the audience, thus winning the prize of “Year 2011 SUV Model Car”. And Wingle Pickup won the nomination award. This is the first time that the Chinese car brand has won the title of Year Car in the ten-year history of “Malaysia’s Car of the Year”. Over the past few years, the Car of the Year award was won by Peugeot, Nissan, Volkswagen and some other brands.

The appraisal activity was held in the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center. The Malaysian dealer of Great Wall Motor, Green Orange Company attended this activity with Haval H5, Wingle 5 and Voleex C20R EV. The car enthusiasts from around Malaysia came to the center to visit those models and cast their votes on November 12 and 13. It is estimated that the show attracted about 45000 visitors within two days, the highest number over the past few years.

“Malaysia’s Car of the Year”, a conclusive activity to present the annual report on the Malaysian automobile market, bears great persuasiveness, directly influencing the tens of thousands of customers on what cars to purchase. Thus, this activity has attracted much attention of many auto manufacturers. Great Wall Motors, as a representative of China’s car brands, stands out of the numerous car brands to win this honorary award, proving that Great Wall Motors has been widely recognized across Malaysia.

The person in charge of the overseas market of Great Wall Motors said that it is not accidental for Haval SUV to win the award of “Malaysia’s Car of the Year”. Great Wall Motors has been adhering to the quality-first philosophy by using the state-of-the-art technologies and reliable quality to win many awards. For instance, Haval SUV “has been ranking top in its sales volume in China for the eight consecutive years”; and “in 2009 it passed the Whole Vehicle Type Approval of European Union”; and it won “the first place for Chinese SUV Team” in the Dakar Rally. With advanced technologies and solid strength, the three major brands of Great Wall Motors will be the new benchmarks for the top-ranking cars.

I still don't get why Great Wall started so well in Australia, then just didn't follow through. Good early sales numbers have collapsed and new product just stopped. I'm hoping they have the smarts to launch Haval here sometime soon, because they still could turn it around.
