The distinction of being first

In 1984 Combined with AMC, an American carmaker, to organize the first joint venture company, Beijing Jeep, Ltd. (BJC), producing middle and top class off road vehicle.
Beijing Auto Works signed the first joint venture with a foreign carmaker when it connected with American Motors Corp (AMC) on May 5,1983. But the venture did not jointly produce cars until January of 1984, months after the first Santanas rolled off the line at Shanghai Auto and Tractor (modern day SAIC) in 1983. VW, the much more successful outsider, signed its JV agreement in 1984.

AMC was then absorbed by Chrysler in 1987, and eleven years later, in 98 Chrysler was absorbed by Daimler.

In 2003 Daimler Chrysler renewed the contract for 30 years. However, I have recently learned that the production of Jeeps by the joint venture ceased at the beginning of this year. I don't know how Daimler and Chrysler are going to divvy up their assets in Beijing, but it looks like from this year on, Chrysler will only import Jeeps to China.

What is especially curious about BAW, is that it still produces jeeps almost in downtown Beijing, in the Chaoyang District, where it has assembled vehicles from the beginning. That's while all the Mercedes, Mitsubishi and Hyundais are being produced at new plants of the BAIC joint ventures, outside the city.

BAW's website is not bashful about saying that this Luba is built on a Toyota (Prado?) platform.

"….LUBA SUV for police use exhibits excellent appearance and performance due to the following features: its Toyota platform,……" engine, etc.

That must mean they have a technical agreement or license with Toyota, right? How do Toyota partners FAW and Guangzhou feel about that, I wonder? Partnerships don't seem to be exclusive anymore.

And nowadays Toyota seems omnipresent in China.

Im in Shanghai , China . This place is car crazy, Must of the Cars here are the GM buick , VW jetta, and lots of big cars,BMW, Rollsroyce,Mencedies excause my spelling of these cars , But this is the first time I have every seen 3 Rollsroyces in one city and about 100 different Mencedies, The car here is a very expensive TOY. Chinese people are new to the car and they treat the car as a piece of gold. I never seen people so obsessed with washing the car. Kinda stupid. If you consider an apartment, where must Chinese live, is very dirty and open to the air, very little heat. Im driving at here the cars here lack Emissons Controls , and crash test saftey test shops to fix the car. The AIR here is very bad well above Internation air quality for the world. For the last four years I have come to Shanghai and the AIR is getting very bad here. The number of Cars has increased because of government incentives for the people to buy a car. They lack insurance and safty rules on the road. You see the evolution of the CAR in Shanghai and China is if you own one you are considered a step up in class and FACE. People here do not no the rules of the road ; most do not care, about how they drive , the traffic rules that exist are not followed by most drivers. Drivers ethics do not excist . The pedestrian does not have the right of way the CAR is more important. They will run you over. They do not care.
They speed, run red lights, and drive the wrong way on a one way. Donot know how to park; and will park any where,,sidewalks are parking spots for these people. The car test is on line it is not a driving test to get your license, mutable choice and the test does not ask you about driivng the car. 3 years ago there whereover 100 people killed in traffic car related accidents in Shanghai for one month. So you now see what kind of driver you have here. You can buy a Black Market license here. The police do not enforce the traffic runs , not enough police. Accidents do not get reported unless there is a death. It is sort of Backwards..here for the car. But this has not stopped people from buying the most expensive car they can get. BAD AIR and Bad drivers and no parking for the car is common here in Shanghai . what a joke...OH I would not drive a car made in China in North America , the quality is not the same..
