Jiangling Motors auto sales down 36% y/y in Jan.

February 6, 2009

Jiangling Motors Corp Ltd, a Chinese venture of Ford Motor, produced 4,313 vehicles in January this year, down 31.26% year on year (y/y) and down 22.22% month on month (m/m), and sold 4,274 vehicles last month, down 36.08% y/y and down 34.47% m/m, National Business Daliy reported today, citing the company's statement.

Currently, Jiangling Motors produces five vehicle models, which include the Ford Transit commercial vehicle, JMC light truck, pickup truck, Baowei SUV, and Yunba minivan. Of these vehicles, the Ford Transit CV and Baowei SUV saw their output exceeding their sales in January.

All the Jiangling-made vehicle models saw considerable fall in output and sales last month, with the Yunba minivan's output and sales dropping most to 8 and 13 units respectively in January from 54 and 43 units in December 2008.

In 2008, Jiangling Motor produced 94,340 vehicles, down from 95,285 a year earlier, and sold 95,171 units, up from 95,059 in 2007. The company sold 38,290 light trucks, 27,472 Ford Transit commercial vehicles, 26,073 pickup trucks, 2,765 SUVs and 571 minivans / microbuses last year.

At the end of 2008, Jiangling Motors won the go-ahead from its board of directors to kick off N800 Project, which is a plant of a new light commercial vehicle. The 725-million-yuan ($106 mln) project is expected to produce 80,000 N800 cars annually starting 2012.

News from Chinoy54's company in the Philippines:

JMC, Dreamco roll out pickup, light trucks:

Chinese manufacturer Jiangling Motors Co. (JMC) has launched a series of pickup and light trucks produced in partnership with Filipino assembler Dreamco Automobile Co.

Four variants of the JMC N301 Hunter pickup and the three variants of the JMC Compadre trucks rolled out of Dreamco's assembly plant at the Laguna Technopark, Inc. just outside Metro Manila early this week.

The Hunter comes in single and double cabin with 4x2 and 4x4 layouts.

The Compadre, meanwhile, is a series that comes in four- and six-wheeler options - all powered by a direct-injection diesel-fed engine - under the variant names JMH, JMK4 and JMK6. Dreamco imports the trucks in knocked down form and assembles them consistent with the workmanship in JMC's other assembly areas.

JMC's history and expertise in truck manufacturing comes from years of joint ventures with Isuzu Motors Corp. and Itochu Corp. of Japan, and with Ford Motor Co. It is one of China's leading manufacturers with an annual output of 100,000 units.

"JMC... sets a higher and more consistent level of quality compared to other Chinese automotive manufacturers that assemble vehicles from a multitude of generic component suppliers and which assemble and market such activities under a single brand," the company said in a statement.

JMC is expanding its dealership to 19 from the current ten to access a wider market from La Union in Luzon to Davao in Mindanao.

JMC will not abandon the sedan market, board chairman says

Does being able to make dependable and successful commercial vehicles translate to making good passenger cars? That is the question facing Jiangxi-based Jiangling Motors now.

Jiangling (JMC) halted production of its only sedan, the Fenghua in June. However, JMC Board Chairman Wang Xigao affirmed his manufacturer's interest in the sedan market. "The sedan program is currently within the planning phase," Mr. Wang said, adding that "JMC will not abandon the market."

JMC is currently in a very delicate relationship with Changan and Ford. Both JMC parent Jiangling Group and Changan invested 500 million yuan ($60.49m) to open the Jiangling Holding Company in December 2004. The company would go on to hold 41.03 percent of JMC, becoming the manufacturer's largest shareholder.

However, Changan's ability to support JMC started to slip, forcing the manufacturer to search out cooperation with Ford. JMC's sedan business was an important way for it to balance out its relationships with Changan and Ford.

An unnamed source close to JMC said that he was unconfident in the manufacturer's ability to progress in the sedan segment. "The Fenghua has not had any effect on the market for three years without the slightest effect," he commented. "JMC lacks the technology and R&D ability to manufacture a sedan."

Jiangling Holding has already invested 3 billion yuan ($470.2m) to open a new factory in Nanchang with a production capability of 300,000 vehicles. The factory is planned to be completed by the end of 2012. Industry analysts have pointed out that this will bring JMC's total production capability up to 500,000 vehicles, far above the amount needed solely for the commercial vehicle market.
