Post GM to form JV with Harbin Light Truck

General Motors Corp is set to form a joint venture with northeastern China's Harbin Light Truck Factory Co. Ltd after the latter terminates partnership with FAW Group, said sina.com today. The venture may produce pickups, SUVs and light trucks for GM.

Harbin Light Truck Factory started as a military-industrial plant making heavy military trucks. Later it also came to make civilian-use trucks and mini-vans. In the mid-1990s, the factory ended its affiliation to Ministry of Space Industry and partnered with FAW Group to make pickups, Jiefang trucks and mini-vans for the Chinese auto giant. Many of the vehicles have been exported to the Middle East and Africa.

Now the marriage of more than ten years between FAW Group and Harbin Light Truck is coming to an end for some unrevealed reason. As it is to quit FAW, the light-truck maker is gearing up for building a joint venture with GM to make pickups, SUVs and light trucks for the U.S. auto giant.

Reportedly, General Motors Asia Pacific will invest in the joint venture, with Harbin Light Truck Factory Co. Ltd holding the majority 51% stake and the other 49% to be controlled by GM. The details of the venture and production models are expected to be announced in May.

General Motors, which now has two major Chinese ventures Shanghai GM and SAIC-GM-Wuling, sold 1,094,561 vehicles in China in 2008, up 6.1% from 2007. The rapid sales growth of GM's commercial vehicle venture SAIC-GM-Wuling had offset the sales drop of Shanghai GM.

Although GM is floundering in its home market, in China its doing a roaring trade thanks to its portfolio of cars that are well suited to the Chinese market.

GM plans to improve in 2010 with the beginning of a new JV with China’s First Automobile Works (FAW) in North East China. The JV is set to produce light commercial vehicles for the Chinese marketplace and will be fully set up by the end of 2009 and will have production bases in both Yunan province and in Heilongjiang province.

GM launches $293 mln LCV venture with FAW in China.

General Motors announced on Sunday the establishment of a 50-50 light commercial vehicle joint venture with major Chinese automaker FAW Group Corp.

GM said in a statement that the two companies are making a combined investment of 2 billion yuan ($293 million) for the new company, and will significantly expand FAW's existing light commercial truck business,

The venture, based in the northeast China city of Changchun in Jilin province, will use two existing FAW plants in Changchun and the city of Harbin, with combined annual capacity of roughly 90,000 vehicles, said GM China President Kevin Wale.

A third plant, currently under construction in Harbin, will add 100,000 units of capacity by the end of next year, he said.

"This is an important complement to the rest of our portfolio," Mr. Wale said. "We are well established in passenger vehicles and mini commercial vehicles and we haven't had a presence in the truck segment. Adding a truck portfolio rounds that out."

The venture aims to sell between 80,000 and 90,000 vehicles this year and 100,000 next year, and vehicles made at the new venture may also be exported under a GM brand in global market in the future, according to GM.

Lets hope that GM has more luck with this light truck venture up in Manchuria. Its efforts to join Jinbei and Brilliance in marketing the Blazer and S-10 crew cab pickup, earlier in this century never could get off the ground.

Back in 2000 Yang Bo, Jinbei GM vice president of marketing and distribution said this:

"We are very optimistic about the sales potential of our vehicles. The market in China for medium-size pickups and SUVs is expected to more than double over the next 10 years, especially for trucks that are both durable and versatile."

By 2003 sales were just 3,300, and shortly thereafter the venture came to an end.

FAW-GM Light Duty Commercial Vehicle Co Ltd, a 50-50 partnership between General Motors and China's FAW Group, has already put into operation its 200,000-capacity new plant in Changchun, Jiling Province, Xinhua News Agency reported Friday.

The new plant currently has an annual production capacity of 80,000 light commercial vehicles, including the pick-up, SUV, MPV and light bus. Pick-ups will be initially manufactured at the plant, followed by SUVs, light buses and other products from GM, and as demand increases in the world's largest auto market, the capacity will be expanded to 200,000 units.

The FAW-GM joint venture was established in August 2009, with a registered capital of 1.2 billion yuan ($176 million) and a total investment of 2 billion yuan. Based on FAW's existing production facilities in Changchun, the JV is also operated by Harbin Light Vehicle Co Ltd and Hongta Yunnan Automotive Manufacturing Co Ltd, according to GM's executive vice president Nick Reilly.

The FAW Group is one of the largest automotive groups in China, with substantial joint ventures with Volkswagen Group and Toyota Motor as well as extensive wholly-owned operations.

Quote:
“FAW-GM’s “Jiefang 501” light duty truck is a perfect blend of multiple state-of -art technologies”, stated Iftekhar Ibrahim, Deputy Director of FAW-GM Engineering/R&D center.

“We have focused on design and quality improvements while ensuring that all emissions regulations are met and at the same time achieving a 4.1% - 10.2% fuel economy improvement over the competition.Overall vehicle design is new and provides for stable and safe driving.

The suspension system of this vehicle has been optimized in several areas including leaf springs which have been reinforced and have 30% more life than competitors. Customers’ demand for payload can be met without adding reinforced leaf springs. Additionally, chassis design has been considerably improved. Since FAW-GM Light Duty Commercial Vehicle Co., Ltd. was founded, it makes full use of advantages of both partners, resulting in outstanding sales performance. In March, we had new historic high monthly sales of 13,233 units with a year-on-year 1st Quarter volume increase of 26.89%.” To further meet the market needs and to merge FAW’s mature automaking technologies with GM’s international quality supervision system, FAW-GM is now building a Harbin New Plant as the production basis for light duty trucks. Its annual capacity is 100,000 units. Currently, the main building construction is complete and the whole project is expected to be complete in December 2010.

Mr. Liu Liyan, Executive Vice President of FAW-GM said: “Jiefang 501 not only has globalized quality, but also has improved product service. We will leverage resources of our partners and stick to strategic philosophy that 1+1>2. we will become a profitable company through high quality products with low cost environmental solutions and providing the best customer-ownership experience resulting in a business where employees are proud to work.“
