Beiqi Foton Motor Co., Ltd. except the Foton brand produces trucks under several other less known brands - Forland and Rowor. These trucks are sold only on domestic market. Recently, under the Rowor brand the company has presented very interesting and original model for China - the medium duty semi-bonneted truck EL2000. Popeye truck looks similar to Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, but does not have anything to do with it. Rather, it is built on a standard cabover chassis 3 系中卡 (3rd series), which is a copy of Foton Auman. Overall dimensions of EL2000 are 8750x2380x2800 mm. The engine is surprisingly weak for such vehicle - YC4D130-33 with a power of only 96 kW (130 hp) and maximum torque of 380 Nm. Payload is 9650 kg. Top speed according to official documents is more than 110 kph (is it real with such weak engine???). Fuel consumption is 10.8 l/100 km, which seems like a fairy tale.

Daimler, Foton To Start Producing Trucks In China In Third Quarter

Chinese truck joint venture with Beiqi Foton Motor Co. will produce its first vehicle in the third quarter this year, the German auto maker said Saturday.

The joint venture "will enable us to play a major role in the Chinese truck market and give us access to the attractive volume segment," Daimler truck chief Andreas Renschler said in a statement.

The 50-50 joint venture, called Beijing Foton Daimler Automotive Co., will "greatly strengthen our strategic and operational cooperation," said Xu Heyi, chairman of Foton's largest shareholder, Beijing Automotive Group Co.

Daimler received final approval from the Chinese authorities for the joint venture with Foton in September after negotiations dragged on for several years. Increasing its footprint in China is integral to Daimler's plan of boosting its presence in emerging markets.

Daimler and Foton will produce trucks for the medium- and heavy-duty segments.

"The market's volume has doubled over the last five years, and more than 1 million trucks are now being sold in this segment in China," Daimler said. Last year, China accounted for around 40% of worldwide sales of medium- and heavy-duty trucks.

The BFDA joint venture is based in the Foton Auman facility in Beijing's Huairou district and will have an annual production capacity of 160,000 trucks.

Daimler's truck division is the world's largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles by revenue, and contributed to the Stuttgart-based firm's recent earnings growth, which was driven by surging sales at its core Mercedes-Benz luxury car brand.

The division comprises the Mercedes-Benz, Freightliner, Western Star and Fuso brands, and includes light-, medium- and heavy-duty trucks as well as special-purpose vehicles, such as those for construction sites.

Chinese automaker Foton Motor group has opened an assembly plant in Nairobi in a bid to explore the market in Kenya and East Africa.

The plant, which cost $50 million, was officially opened Monday by Prime Minister Raila Odinga and a visiting Chinese delegation led by Liu Qi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.

At the opening ceremony, Odinga said Kenya had to embrace manufacturing as a means of restoring and strengthening the middle class.

Odinga said a strong middle class is critical to Kenya's growth and stability.

He urged manufacturers to produce cheaper cars that would enable more Kenyans to afford new vehicles.

Liu said at the opening ceremony that China was exploring other areas of cooperation with Kenya, saying there was high potential in tourism to increase the number of Chinese visitors to the East African nation.

Second-hand vehicles command a large share of the market in Kenya, and 70 percent of the market share in East Africa.

Analysts believe Chinese investment in the field could help change the situation.

The assembly plant will make Foton Motor company more competitive because it will avoid paying a 25-percent duty on fully built imported units.

The plant was expected to serve the rapidly growing market for pickups and light commercial vehicles in East Africa. It can supply at least 10,000 units to the region.

Analysts here say that by setting up the first Foton assembly plant in Kenya, the company has shown tremendous confidence in the economy of the country.

The company is currently in the process of recruiting dealers across East Africa. Consumer trends here indicate that buyers go for vehicles that they know they can buy spare parts at the nearest town.

The automotive industry in Kenya and East Africa has long been dominated by Toyota (East Africa), Cooper Motor Corporation (CMC), General Motors (GM), Simba Colt and DT Dobie.

Odinga said the emerging competition in the motor vehicle assembly industry in Kenya was a sign of good times ahead with the coming of the East Africa Common market.

"In the past, the fragmented economies of the East African countries discouraged the auto dealers from setting up assembly plants. The common market has made it possible for the dealers to capture to plan for this market of more than 130 million people," he said.

"It is a new era of competition. And competition is always good news for the consumer. For Kenya, this is just but the beginning," he noted.

Foton Daimler JV officially begins business

The Foton Daimler joint venture has officially begun business, Economic Observer News reported today. The joint venture, which is equally owned between truck manufacturer Beiqi Foton and Daimler AG, has been heralded as revolutionizing the traditional business model of automobile manufacturing JVs in China.

Foton Daimler, the product of nine years of negotiations, was officially established in late February of this year. At that time, the first Chinese Auman GTL truck made its worldwide market debut. Both companies have invested a total of 6.35 billion yuan ($1.02b) in the JV, whose total registration capital is valued at 5.6 billion yuan ($884.23m). Daimler Board of Management Member overseeing Daimler Trucks Andreas Renschler has been selected to be the board chairman of the JV. He will be assisted by Foton Deputy General Manager Wu Yuejun, who has assumed the posts president and CEO.

Foton Daimler differs from other Sino-foreign automobile joint ventures in that it is not competing using a foreign brand, but a Chinese one. "The [mutual] goal of both parties is to maintain and improve the image and position of Auman trucks in the country," a Foton official was quoted as saying. The JV hopes that its Auman trucks, now equipped with Mercedes-Benz engines, will be able to come to the forefront of the Chinese truck market.
