Borrowing German technology, Huatai to build 4-speed auto transmissions.

February 18, 2008 – Chinese automaker Huatai will use German technology to build 4-speed automatic transmission gears for its new SUV and sedan cars, Chinese language newspaper Beijing News reported today.

Under a technology transfer agreement recently reached between the Huatai Auto and ZF Friedrichshafen AG, the German power train and chassis maker will supply automatic transmission technology to China’s Huatai Auto Group as part of the cooperation deal.

A Huatai Auto official said the automatic transmission gears will be produced in Huatai’s production base in Erdos, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. By 2014, the base will be able to produce 150,000 units of auto transmission gears. In addition to 4-speed auto transmissions, Huatai is also planning to build 6-speed auto transmissions using German technology.

Separately, the Huatai Auto is also planning to produce 300,000 clean diesel engines (with displacement between 1.5 liter and 2.8 liters) designed by Italian engine maker VM in 2009. The Chinese automaker plans to increase the output of these diesel engines to one million units annually by 2012.

Huatai plans to launch two self-developed SUV models by the end of 2009 and three self-designed diesel sedans by 2010.

SUV-maker Huatai Auto to launch first sedan in 2009.

May 28, 2008 - China's SUV-maker Huatai Automobile is expected to launch its first Huatai-brand sedan in the second half of next year. This self-developed B-class car has integrated the exterior design by a Chinese auto design firm as well as the engines and transmission by Italian VM and German ZF. Carrying the Huatai logo, the sedan will come in the gasoline and diesel powered versions, with young white-collars and businesspeople as its target customers.

As a young Chinese SUV manufacturer founded in 2000, Shandong, Rongcheng-based Huatai Auto has set its new strategy of developing the mid- to high-end sedans by using the national and global automaking technologies. In the past few years, Huatai Auto has been a powerful supplier of SUVs in the Chinese and global market. Its entry into the sedan segment will expand its product lineup and turn a new page in its future growth. At a recent ceremony, Huatai unveiled the new sedan model and and its sedan logo (which looks like the Windows page flapping in the BMW circle?), but did not reveal the company's blueprint in detail.

The Chinese SUV maker, also a partner of South Korea's Hyundai Motor, introduced Hyundai's advanced Sante Fe in China earlier this year. Huatai has been making the Sante Fe, and the Terracan SUV in China for several years now, and have received permission from Hyundai to rebadge the Terracan, and the Sante Fe as its own vehicles.

Huatai-Hyundai has teamed up with SAIC-owned brand, Roewe, to stick the Rover-acquired 1.8t K series engine into the Hyundai Santefe. Huatai is really in a position to shake up the Chinese SUV market. But its ambitions will not stop here -- the SUV maker is making its foray into the sedan market.

Huatai to concentrate on building sedans

Huatai were previously a partner of Hyundai, and made Hyundai’s last generation Sante Fe and Terracan SUV’s in the Chinese marketplace, when this JV expired Huatai were given the outgoing platforms to do with as they wished. Huatai thus continued selling the Sante Fe and Terracan as their own vehicles but are planning to divert sales away from SUVs and into their own sedan line up.

Huatai were rumoured to be putting the Hyundai Matrix into production under their own brand, but it seems they are still intent on putting their own Bentely Continental styled sedan into production, which is known as the Huatai B11. The B11 is essentially a premium vehicle according to Huatai, and has already been in production for three years and when launched will deliver a large strike against other self developed Chinese vehicles such as the Brilliance BS4 and Chery Riich G5 and G6.

In a recent interview, the Huatai Chairman, Mr. Wang Dian Ming, believed that the self developed premium vehicle market was the next big market for Chinese vehicle manufacturers as the self developed mini car market is far too competitive with practically every Chinese car manufacturer and international car maker offering their own wares in that segment.

Huatai also previously changed their name to Hawtai.

Hello,

is it realistic to expect a concept of at least one of the new vehicles that were shown in a brochure? The C11 looks great but the B21 looks very plain and already outdated!

That is true, Rallye Red Lancer GTS, but the headlights of the C11 look more modern than those of the Chrysler 300. Do you know if the C11 is a compact or a midsize car?
