Problems for Ford in China

Ford halts Transit van production in China over pedal

Following the government mandated sales freeze and subsequent production halt in the U.S. by Toyota for eight of its popular models, Ford has announced that it shares a common supplier for the diesel Transit Classic commercial van in China. Ford announced that it has not received a single report of unintended acceleration, but it will suspend Chinese production of the model until the pedal can be reviewed.

Ford produces commercial vehicles with its partner, Jiangling Motors, for Chinese consumption. Today, Ford announced that it will temporarily halt production of its full-size Transit Classic commercial van after determining that it shares the same parts manufacturer that produced the faulty gas pedals for the Toyota applications.

“Jiangling Motors Company (JMC) has suspended production of one of the Transit models, a light bus vehicle JMC manufactures in Nanchang for distribution only in China,” said a JMC representative.

“While there has been no report of any issue with the Transit, JMC has initiated a review of a pedal assembly part recently sourced from CTS Automotive,” said JMC.

The pedal was only used in the diesel variant of the Transit Classic, of which about 1,600 were produced for Chinese consumption. Ford’s joint venture with Jiangling Motors resulted in the sale of 114,688 commercial vehicles in China last year.

At this time Ford has not placed a recall, it clarified that it is taking a preemptive precaution due to the commonality of the pedal supplier.

On this model, perhaps a different configuration of the coolant line routing is what prevents the "condensation buildup" at the (CTS) sliding surface of the throttle control. In any event, replacing them all will let lots of people sleep easier.

Smart move by Ford, dragin, and BTW, thanks for that explanation regarding the different configuration of the coolant line routing to prevent the "condensation buildup" at the (CTS) sliding surface of the throttle control.

I think that a whole lot of American people need to read and try to understand this problem as related to their Toyota-made vehicles. There's a whole lot of frustration and confusion in the States right now related to people's perception of safety while driving their Toyota vehicle.

I can understand why they're concerned, too. Toyota is not making them feel much better and they're not releasing announcements that are all warm and fuzzy related to the recalls. A large mess on this huge automaker's hands right now.

Ford Celebrates Production of 7 Millionth Transit Van

NANCHANG, China, June 20, 2013 – Ford Motor Company today announced production of the seven millionth Transit, the popular commercial van launched in 1965 in Europe and now being extended to 118 markets across six continents.

Lined up end to end, the seven million Transits would stretch from London to Sydney, Australia, and back again.

The milestone was celebrated at the official opening today of a new Transit assembly plant in Nanchang, China, attended by Ford President and CEO Alan Mulally.
