BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese auto sales were likely to hit or surpass 10 million units in 2008, Cai Weici, vice chairman of China Machinery Industry Federation (CMIF) forecasted on Monday.

Official figures revealed that the country turned out 8.88 million automobiles in 2007, 22.02 percent more than the previous year, surpassing the eight million prediction made at the beginning of 2007.

Aggregate auto sales volume stood at 8.79 million, up 21.84 percent year on year.

Experts ascribed the robust sales growth to increasing market demand, as a recent survey by the State Information Center revealed more than 10 million Chinese households wanted to buy private cars soon. This was boosted by rising incomes and falling car prices.

The country is also stepping up its research and development of clean energy vehicles, including electric, fuel cell and hybrid automobiles, as energy saving and environmental protection has become a key concern of the country, said the CMIF.

Commercial vehicle output volume stood at 2.50 million, up 22.21 percent compared with the previous year and passenger vehicle numbers topped 6.38 million, up 21.94 percent year on year. This is the first year that the growth rate of commercial vehicles has surpassed passenger vehicles, according to the association.

Association statistics revealed domestic manufacturers had released nearly 90 new models onto the market last year.

Compare this year's 8.79 million sales with the roughly 2.1 million at the turn of the century. At that point passenger cars were less than one third the total.

It's important to be aware that 1.3 billion people this year must now live with the emissions spewing from the tailpipes of this many more vehilces. I just hope the lights will remain on at the State Environmental Protection Administration offices to deal with it.

You can't artificially limit car sales in the name of environmental protection (well, you could, but that's not the right way).

The car industry in many ways, greatly contribute to the economy. With the right policies in place, you can keep the economy humming while protecting the environment.

Have laws that get the old, polluting cars off the road. (10% of cars do 90% of the pollution)
Strict smog check for cars (each year for older cars, less often for newer cars)
Encourage clean technologies.
Encourage fuel efficient cars.
Reduce taxes on buying/registering cars but increase taxes on fuel (the overall tax burden is the same, but this encourage people to buy cars, but drive less - keeping the economy humming, but reduce pollution and fuel use)

I agree wholeheartedly with BringIt: Granted, no-one wants to slow down China's emerging economic machine in any way, but if the government were to get involved (similar to US CAFE standards) with a short-range timeline (say of three years rather than the 20 proposed here) that would force all auto manufacturers to produce ONLY zero emissions vehicles by then (2011). At that point, we could start making a huge worldwide dent in greenhouse gas emissions immediately (thereby curbing the killer storms sweeping the globe and killing millions, not to mention stopping thousands of cities from being under water in just a few years). Do we really want our kids to grow up on a tropical polluted planet that generates killer storms every few days?
Fuel ecomomy needs to be measured by KW/H not MPG and that electricity generation likewise needs a short timeline (say five years) to switch from coal and nuclear to wind, solar and hydro/geothermal (there is no place on the globe where one of these three can not be effectively utilized).
