The Chevrolet Cruze has been spotted in China wrapped in the usual GM/SAIC camo. The Cruze was reportedly developed by GM’s international design team and will be sold as an international car, i.e. under different brands in different markets. The Chevy Cruze is expected to replace the aging Daewoo Lacetti in Europe, and we can except the same in China, except the Lacetti is sold under the Buick brand in China, thus the Cruze may well become the Buick Cruze.

The first renderings of the Cruze were shown at a GM Press conference on July 18th, so the time from coming from renderings into a prototype car is extremely fast.

Other websites report that the Cruze will getting a 1.4 Turbo gasoline engine, however from what we have learned so far, the above test mule is a 1.6 Auto model, not quite as interesting as a 1.4 Turbo, but still adequate for the Chinese market place.

GM to assemble new Chevrolet car in China

August 13, 2008 - The Chevrolet Cruze, a new small car, will be assembled in China in late 2009 or early 2010, say industry sources.

The car will be manufactured here starting from knockdown kits, says John Zeng, senior market analyst at Global Insight.

The Cruze will be built in multiple locations around the world, says a statement from General Motors.

The production version of the Cruze will be revealed at the Paris auto show this October.

The Cruze is based on General Motors' Delta compact car platform and will come with a 1.4 liter engine. The turbocharged four-cylinder engine is to be used in several GM vehicles worldwide.

The Cruze will seat five and will be 4.6 meters long. It will compete with the Ford Focus in the compact car segment.

Chevrolet Cruze to hit China market in March 2009.

October 16, 2008 - GM has announced that its all-new compact sedan Chevrolet Cruze that debuted at the 2008 Paris Motor Show will enter the China market for sale simultaneously with its European launch. Shanghai GM confirmed that Chevy Cruze will come to the Guangzhou auto show next month and go on sale in China as a locally made car early next year, said Chinese media today.

According to GM, the Chevy Cruze "was developed by a global design and engineering team and will be built in multiple locations around the world" and is underpinned by the GM Delta II platform. Cruze features a dramatic re-interpretation of the traditional sedan featuring Chevrolet's new global design language that is becoming a signature on all new products carrying the gold bowtie.

The Chevrolet Cruze will have enhanced interior space and cargo capacity of five passengers. The Chevrolet Cruze comes with compact dimensions featuring bold styling cues, an arching roofline, sloping rear pillars that give it a lean profile and a neatly styled rear deck. The road test of Cruze was going smoothly in China while the sedan was shining at the Paris show.

In Europe, the Cruze will be fitted with 1.6-liter and 1.8-liter gasoline engines, and a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel engine. Transmission choices are a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic. The Cruze model to be made in China should be the 1.8-liter gasoline version, but the 1.6-liter edition is also possible, said Ding Lei, Shanghai GM President.

The Chevrolet Cruze, which is to rival the Ford Focus, will start to sell in Europe and China in March 2009, followed by other global markets. The arrival of the new compact vehicle spearheads a roll-out of new products for the Chevrolet brand, which is expected to grow in the Chinese and global A-Class segment.

Chevrolet Cruze to debut at Guangzhou auto show.

November 5, 2008 - GM will debut its all-new compact sedan Chevrolet Cruze at the upcoming Guangzhou auto show later this month. The Cruze will go on sale in China simultaneously with the European launch in early 2009, said Chinese media today, citing Shanghai GM sources.

According to GM, the Chevy Cruze "was developed by a global design and engineering team and will be built in multiple locations around the world" and is underpinned by the GM Delta II platform (also used for Opel Insignia). Cruze features a dramatic re-interpretation of the traditional sedan featuring Chevrolet's new global design language that is becoming a signature on all new products carrying the gold bowtie.

GM will release the Chevy Cruze as the first model for its global auto strategy. But to meet various market demands, the China-made Cruze for the local market will be different from the American and European versions in many aspects such as the safety design and power system.

In Europe, the Cruze will be fitted with 1.6-liter and 1.8-liter gasoline engines, and a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel engine. Transmission choices are a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic. Both 1.6-liter and 1.8-liter gasoline versions will be made in China by Shanghai GM. The turbo-charged version of a smaller engine is also likely to be introduced to China for local production.

The Chevrolet Cruze, as a global model to rival the Ford Focus, will start to sell in Europe and China simultaneously in March 2009, followed by other global markets. It will be priced between 110,000 ($16,100) and 150,000 yuan for the Chinese market, with young professionals as its target buyers. The Cruze is set to win more of the small-car segment for GM China.

First Chevy Cruze rolls off production line.

The Chevrolet Cruze is Chevrolet’s upcoming compact sedan that is set to be one of GM’s world cars, and will see production in several parts of the globe in 2009. SAIC-GM are starting the production of the Cruze in SAIC-GM’s Shenyang factory, with the first fully assembled test model rolling off the line yesterday, it looks the Shenyang facillity is getting ready to ramp up production way beyond a single car. GM showed off the first production Cruze yesterday, with reportedly many GM management on sight to celebrate the first models production. Work on GM’s Shenyang factory began in 2005, and was completed within 3 years, the factories main focus is on higher quality, and ‘green production’, the factory lies on 136,000 sq meteres of land, and 26.7 billion RMB has been invested in its construction, making it one of the largest GM factories in China, with a production capacity of 150,000 cars per year.

The Chevrolet Cruze is expected to be formally put into production in the second quarter of 2009, and be on the market shortly afterwards.

CCT is not entirely sure what engine the Chinese made Chevy Cruze will come with, the North American markets are expected to recieve a 1.4 turbo engine, European models are set to receive a 1.6l, and 1.8l gasoline engines, as well as a 2.0l diesel engine. CCT can guess that China will follow with the European 1.6l and 1.8l models to rival the Ford Focus, but a 1.4 Turbo model would be interesting as well.

Chevrolet Cruze to hit Chinese market on April 18th.

March 30, 2009 - The long-awaited Cruze model under Shanghai GM's Chevrolet brand is set to go on sale in the Chinese market on April 18, xinhuanet.com said today. This Chevrolet A-class sedan will be priced between 110,000 yuan ($16,100) and 150,000 yuan.

The first batch of all-new compact Chevrolet Cruze sedans has been delivered to the showrooms of Shanghai GM 4S stores in many Chinese cities. Theses cars are only for show in the stores and can not be used for trial driving by potential buyers.

The Chevrolet Cruze will be one of GM's world cars. Shanghai GM started the production of the Cruze in the joint venture's Shenyang factory in late 2008, with the first fully assembled test model rolling off the line on December 17.

GM said that the Chevy Cruze was developed by a global design and engineering team and would be built in multiple locations around the world. It is underpinned by the GM Delta II platform. Cruze features a dramatic re-interpretation of the traditional sedan featuring Chevrolet's new global design language.

The Chevrolet Cruze has enhanced interior space and cargo capacity of five passengers and it comes with compact dimensions featuring bold styling cues, an arching roofline, sloping rear pillars that give it a lean profile and a neatly styled rear deck.

The Cruze model made in China should be the 1.8-liter gasoline version, but the 1.6-liter edition is also possible, said Shanghai GM President Ding Lei at the end of last year.

In China, the Chevrolet Cruze is to rival the Ford Focus. The arrival of the new compact sedan spearheads a roll-out of new products for the Chevrolet brand, which is expected to grow in the Chinese A-Class sedan segment.

Chevrolet Cruze to get 1.6 turbo engine this year

The Chevrolet Cruze has been a good seller for Shanghai-GM with it appearing to be one of the more popular cars on the road since its launch late last year, now the Cruze is aiming to be the recipitent of a 1.6Turbo engine that is currently installed in the Buick Excelle 1.6T hatchback. The 1.6T is good for 184bhp through the front wheels, and will prove to be popular in the Cruze which is already selling well on the back of its advertising which positions it as a sporty car.
