Guangzhou Toyota Motor Co., will start to build Toyota's Highlander in mid-2009 in its new plant.

"Construction of Guangzhou Toyota's second plant will be completed in June next year, and the first new vehicle to be built here might be the Highlander SUV", Feng Xingya, deputy general manager of the company's sales and marketing division, told Beijing Youth Daily.

After completion, the JV automaker will have an annual output of 400,000 units, which is expected to greatly ease the supply pressure of its hot selling Camry model.

Re: 2009 Toyota Highlander

Chinese made Toyota Highlander to cost 270,000rmb?

September 3rd, 2008 -Todays automotive media reports indicate that once the Toyota Highlander is in domestic Chinse production, the fair sized Highlander will be on sale for a mere 270,000rmb putting it up against imported compact SUV range such as the X-Trail, and the Mitsubishi Outlander. The Chinese made Outlander is expected to be paired to 2.7 and 3.5l engines, with the possibility of a 3.3l Hybird model, we estimate that Chinese production will begin early next year.

We’re unsure where the Highlander will be made in China, but as the current imported Highlander is sold through Guangzhou Toyota, we can expect that it will be produced in cooperation with Guangzhou, and not the Toyota-Sichuan FAW joint venture partnership.

December 1, 2008 - In mid-2009, the second plant of GAC Toyota (previously known as Guangzhou Toyota) will be launched into operation, said sina.com today. The first model to be built at the new facility will be the Toyota's new Highlander SUV, whose import to China will stop next month to make room for the locally made model.

An insider of GAC Toyota has revealed that the company will stop importing the Toyota Highlander SUV to the Chinese market from January 2009 in order to clear the stockpiles of the this imported model in the 4S stores. This move is intended to make room for the Highlander model to be made by the second plant of GAC Toyota. All the imported units of Highlander in the stores are expected to be sold out by June when its China production begins.

According to Hu Su, vice general manager of GAC Toyota, construction of the second plant is going according to plan and the new facility will start operation in the middle of next year. The venture's third new model series will be built on the new production line.

After it is locally made in China, the Toyota Highlander SUV is likely to be imported simultaneously to the Chinese market, an industry analyst said, just like FAW Toyota, another Chinese partner of the Japanese carmaker, has been doing with the Toyota Prado model.

The 3.5L Highlander model will be made in China by GAC Toyota, while the all-new 2.7L four-cylinder 2009 Highlander model will be assembled at the venture's new plant from imported components and will be sold in China as an imported model, sources said.

China-made Highlander SUV ready for release.

April 3, 2009 - GAC Toyota (Guangzhou Toyota) has announced that it will launch the locally-made Highland SUV on April to the Chinese market, xinhuanet.com said today. The Toyota SUV will be mass-produced at the newly built second plant of the joint venture.

The Highlander SUV was previously sold in China as an imported vehicle. The Chinese-made Highlander will have ten models avalable, to be priced between 270,000 yuan ($39,530) and 410,000 yuan. Sales staff of a GAC Toyota 4S store said that the Highlander SUV import has stopped as oredering for the China-made Highlander has started, with 20,000 yuan deposit.

GAC Toyota will deliver the first batch of the SUV by June to buyers. The locally-made Highlander SUV will offer the 2.7L mode as its flagship, which will be much cheaper than the imported one. For instance, the imported 3.5L Highlander luxury version sells for 539,000 yuan, and the Chinese-made one will sell for 410,000 yuan.

Construction of the second plant is nearing completion and the new facility will start operation soon. An earlier report said that the 3.5L Highlander model would be made by GAC Toyota, while the all-new 2.7L four-cylinder 2009 Highlander model would be assembled at the venture's new plant from imported components.

They will feature the five-speed automatic manual transmission, four-wheel-drive system, among others. The Toyota Highlander SUV, which includes the Sport, Limited, Hybrid, and Hybrid Limited variants, will rival the Honda Pilot and Nissan Murano series.
