FAW-Mazda confirmed that it will start producing Atenza in Changchun later this year, as the all-new Mazda6 made its Chinese debut in Shanghai. It will join, rather than replace, the two older generations, called " Mazda6" (first-gen) and "Ruiyi" (second-gen) in the local market.

Of varying sizes, the three generations of Mazda6 will compete in different segments. With a 2830mm wheelbase, over 100mm more than that of Ruiyi, Atenza, the third-gen, is placed in the large family car category, while the first-gen Mazda6 targets compacts, Ruiyi midsizes. Together they will cover an extended price range of 120,000-250,000 Yuan.

In China, Atenza will get two petrol engine options: SKYACTIV-G 2.0L and 2.5L. The 2.0L can put out a maximum of 110kW of power and 210Nm of torque, the 2.5L 141kW and 256Nm. Both will be mated to a 6AT or 6MT.
