GM Expands Model Lineup in Russia

KALININGRAD, Russia — General Motors and its local partner, Avtotor, will begin assembling a number of Chevrolet models designed and engineered in Korea by GM Daewoo.
Among the new products are the Chevrolet Aveo Lacetti, Tacuma/Rezzo and Epica, according to European press reports. All but the Tacuma/Rezzo, a compact people-mover, are sold in the United States under either the Chevrolet or Suzuki brands. GM also assembles several of the vehicles in China with local partner Shanghai Auto.
Avtotor has been assembling cars in this northern Russia city with a number of foreign partners, including GM and BMW. It builds versions of the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and Tahoe the Hummer H2, and the Cadillac CTS and STS. Avtotor also is slated to begin assembling the Hummer H3
The Russian assembler also has signed a deal with Chinese truckmaker Zhongxing to build pickups and SUVs later this year.
GM and another partner, Avtovaz, build a small SUV, the Chevrolet Niva, at a joint venture in Togliattigrad, about 700 miles south of Moscow. GM reportedly is negotiating with several cities to build its first wholly owned assembly plant in Russia, according to Automotive News Europe.
