Revived German auto brand Borgward is scheduled to unveil a new, near-production SUV at the forthcoming Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA).
The SUV is to be made by Foton.

A standard Asiatic SUV with a Buick grille. They will make a couple of thousand (like Qoros, Luxgen, DS) and selling in China is going badly, who wants a Borgward in China? Finally Foton will sell them as Foton, or when they are clever, they will do that from the start. Then export to Europe. Who wants a Borgward which resembles a KIA or a Nissan? The sales of Chinese MG’s in England is also not flourishing.

Foton is off to an OK start in Australia for now, but others like Great Wall and Chery in particular have ground to a virtual halt. No effort, no brand development, no understanding of the market, just not serious. I don't know why they bothered.

Rumor: Foton looking to sell Borgward partially

Foton is perhaps trying to enlist an outside investor in Borgward to try and de-risk future capex on growth and development of the brand, as Borgward is taken global. Although Foton is strong financially, the nurturing of a new brand needs lots of investment in newer technologies and compliance challenges (autonomy, safety, emissions, recyclability).

Apparently the Shenzhen-based Baoneng group is interested. Recall that Baoneng is also eyeing a good chunk of Qoros. In March, Baoneng Automobile Co. Ltd. was established through subsidiary companies. Last year, Baoneng signed a cooperation agreement with Fuyang District local authorities and other corporate investors to set up a new energy automobile production base in Fuyang, Hangzhou.
