September 14,2009
BYD's first self-developed upmarket sedan model was unveiled at an auto show in east China's Shandong province last week and is ready to go on sale in the fourth quarter this year, Chinese media reported today.

The G3 is certainly different from BYD's all other models so far and will have an independent A3 sales network, with the A1 network for the F3, F6 models and A2 network for the F3R, F0 models. The G3 is the first model to sell through BYD's A3 network.

As an upmarket compact sedan model positioned between the F3 and F6 models, the G3 will priced from 80,000 yuan ($11,700) to 100,000 yuan.

The G3 is going to be built on the same platform as BYD's popular F0, F3 models. It will come with power from a 1.5-liter or a 1.8-liter engine and also the option of a 5-speed manual or CVT gearbox.

The BYD G3 was rumored to be a 'mini Lexus' model, thanks to its rear end appearing on CCT earlier this year, but the front end is certainly Toyota Vios in style.

I think it is odd having a push button start on such a low priced car. And despite looking rather like a Corolla, I think it is a good car. I know BYD copy cars almost constantly, but have you ever heard any stories of how bad the quality was or any break downs?

Hi KiwiGuy:
You make a good point. No. We don't hear about the quality and reliability problems of these small Chinese manufacturers. But that seems to be because there is no independent quality monitoring group in China looking out for the customers interests. Oh yeah granted JD Powers is in China but it focuses mainly on the big foreign joint ventures.

I guess there is one exception, China Car Forums. :) It does provide some good feedback for customers who are doing their research.

It's also extremely rare to hear about any government recalls aimed at these smaller players.

Thank you Jerry.....
This G3 built on the same platform as the F0 and F3, has been kept well under wraps from the beginning. We've been seeing the rear end view a lot but its a stretch to see the suggested resemblance to a Lexus. Anyway I'd like to reserve judgement until I see shots from some other angles.
Have to hand it to BYD though for getting that CVT transmission out there before other Chinese makers.

Prices announced for G3
From China Car Times:
The eagerly awaited BYD G3 is set to launch on October 26th and will give BYD yet another stab at the compact sedan market which they have been ruling like a king for the past few months.

The BYD G3 will be powered by a 1.5L Mitsubishi engine, and a 1.8L engine which is BYD’s own offering. The self designed and built 1.8L engine is will produce 122BHP (90kW) and have a max torque of 160Nm. The 1.5l engine will come with a 5 speed manual, where as the 1.8l will be given a CVT gearbox.

The G3 will be priced as follows:

■Standard GL-i : 56,800rmb
■GLX-i: 59,800rmb
■GS-i: 66,800rmb
■GLX-i NAVI: 76,800

Furthermore, the BYD G3 is expected to carry the CAN-BUS system as standard, keyless entry, engine start button as well as the usual safety features such as crash protection bars, ABS, EBD etc
From what I see, the G3, despite what some people might say, is a bargain. Not many cars retail for that price and have all that as standard features.
