Byd Auto, a privately owned Chinese automobile manufacturer introduced its new F8 sportscar earlier this week.

It is the first Chinese vehicle with independent intellectual property rights which comes with an electrically operated hardtop. With the touch of the button it can be opened or closed in 25 seconds.

The 4,5 meter long cabrio-coupe features electric windows, DVD player, Bluetooth capabilities, ABS and four airbags.

The company estimates a price of around RMB 200,000 but it is not known when the car will be on the market.

This use of really obviously stolen design cues is gut wrenching, SHAME ON YOU BYD!

I'm shocked. I don't know what to think about this. Obviously it's a Renault Megane CC rear and CLK/SL front put together. :(

They should export it. Anyone that wants a Benz convertible but can't afford one might buy the F8. Just take the BYD logo off and put a Benz logo on it and no one can tell the it's not a benz. I like the red alloy wheels, ANy word on what the displacement/kw(hp) of the engine is going to be?

BYD's thrust

i rarely hear about byd..is it big in china?? or just vanishing...
BYD is a very successful cell phone battery maker that bought a small state-owned producer of the Suzuki-based Flyer minicar, about 5 years ago. It has die-making facilities that have made their mark in the industry. Total sales last year were only about 11,000 units.

But instead of imitating BMW logos, and Mercedes body styles it should concentrate on overcoming its quality problems, and on using its skills in electrics to build some much-needed EVs and hybrids.

Chinese Make Offers "Byd" for Sports Market

XI'AN, China — Byd, a privately owned carmaker in the city of Xi'an, will unveil a new sports car at the forthcoming Beijing auto show.

Called the F8, it is the first Chinese hardtop convertible with independent intellectual property rights. Byd Auto has not always been so original. The company, which is controlled by a mobile phone battery producer, started its automotive adventure as an assembler of the Suzuki Alto.

In 2001, the company introduced the Alto-based Flyer minicar, which was followed by the rather Toyota Corolla-esque F3 in 2005. The company's BMW 7 Series lookalike, called the F6, is also scheduled to be launched soon.

From certain angles, the 177.1-inch (although other sources claim it's the 161-inch) F8 looks like a Mercedes-Benz SL. Its hood can be raised in 25 seconds with the touch of a button, by a hydraulic mechanism. It will be generously equipped: ABS, four airbags, DVD player, electric windows and so on. Byd has not announced the date of its market launch, but predicts that the price will be around U.S. $25,400.

What this means to you: Sure, it is a bit of a copycat, but still a huge leap forward from such crude devices as the Geely Beauty Leopard

Wow, really bad taste.

Yeah, the front end is definetely SL-class(minus the class), but the rear end is more Opel/Vauxhall Astra than Renault Mégane CC. Anyway, the color scheme is really tacky, maybe its just a chinese thing(if you don't believe me, the Citroën Elysée-a China only model- is available with a black interior with hot pink upholstry, i'm sorry, even barbie wouldn't buy this car).

I agree with you
Me too. The designers should feel shameful about it. Maybe doing nothing is better than doing this.

But it's no strange that BYD did such a job, the company began its business by copying Toyota Corolla, it's just that this time, they change it to Benz. Hope to see its own designs in the future.
