Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) giant BYD today officially launched its premium Yangwang brand, as well as its first models. In addition to the hardcore off-road SUV that it has been previewing for months, the company also brought a surprise supercar.
BYD introduced the Yangwang brand today at a launch event at its Shenzhen headquarters, where its chairman and president Wang Chuanfu said the brand will be the first to use a number of BYD Group's top technologies.
The company highlighted a technology platform known as e⁴ at the event, which it said will be the basis for all future models of the Yangwang brand.
e⁴ is China's first mass-produced quad motor independent drive technology platform that enables precise control of the vehicle's four-wheel dynamics thanks to quad motor independent vector control technology, BYD said.
BYD opened its launch event by having an SUV enter in crabwalk mode to show off this technology.
e⁴ is a power system with a four-motor independent drive as the core, which completely reconfigures the characteristics of NEVs in terms of perception, decision making and execution, overturning the capability system of previous fuel vehicles' power systems, BYD said.
The prototype of the technology appeared in the ET concept car released by BYD 20 years ago, which was inspired by the perfect control of the posture of the cheetah in the high-speed state.
The four motors independently drive the four wheels of the vehicle, like the four independent and powerful legs of a cheetah, thus allowing the vehicle to have better safety and performance, BYD said.
Compared to traditional fuel vehicle powertrains, e⁴ technology can independently adjust the vehicle's four-wheel dynamics at millisecond speeds through a more perceptive electric drive system to better control body posture.
This also gives the vehicle greater safety redundancy, such as the ability to adjust the torque of the remaining three wheels at a rate of 1,000 times per second after a single-tire blowout, helping the driver bring the vehicle to a stable and controlled stop.
Models equipped with e⁴ technology have IP68-rated protection for their core systems and can gain emergency flotation and extrication capabilities with four-wheel independent vectoring, according to BYD.
The platform is capable of delivering a maximum motor speed of 20,500 rpm, giving the vehicle more than 1,100 horsepower.
The independent positive and negative torque output capability of the quad-motor drive technology allows the vehicle to brake from 100 km/h in 40 meters when the steering and brakes are not working.
The technology also allows the vehicle to achieve a flexible turn-in-place function on high-traction roads such as tarmac, according to BYD.
BYD debuted the Yangwang U8 and Yangwang U9, both of which will be equipped with e⁴ technology, at today's launch event.
The Yangwang U8, the brand's first production model, is a hardcore off-road SUV that is more than 5 meters long and 2 meters wide.
The model is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 4 seconds and will be priced at RMB 1 million ($145,500).
The Yangwang U8 has the performance, safety and reliability of a hardcore off-road SUV, with intelligent extrication and emergency avoidance capabilities in complex road conditions, along with technology and intelligence, according to BYD.
Yangwang U9, on the other hand, is a supercar that will also be priced at the RMB 1 million level, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3 seconds.
Yangwang's R&D team has used innovative technologies to bring the U9 the ultimate safety body structure, capable of driving comfortably in the city as well as driving at the limits of the track, according to BYD.
The Yangwang brand will establish its own sales channels to create a premium brand independent of BYD.
BYD did not announce when the Yangwang U8 and Yangwang U9 will be available or any more details, but both products are interesting for the Chinese NEV market.
In the hardcore off-road SUV segment, the main options currently include the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, but its starting price is a whopping RMB 1.89 million. And there are no electric off-road SUVs available to Chinese consumers yet.
In the electric supercar segment, local automakers are starting to pay more and more attention.
On September 15, GAC Aion unveiled its new premium brand Hyper and its first model, the Hyper SSR supercar.
Powered by GAC Aion's in-house developed high-performance motor, the Hyper SSR has a maximum of 1,225 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in as fast as 1.9 seconds.

BYD sub-brand, Yangwang, unveiled its first vehicle – the BYD Yangwang U8 (also known as the R1) – at its official launch in China. This new energy, hardcore off-road SUV is expected to be a popular choice among consumers. In a surprising move, Yangwang also revealed a supercar called the U9. This marks the first time that Yangwang has ventured into the supercar market.

At the launch event, BYD’s chairman, Wang Chuanfu, personally drove the new Yangwang U8 into the venue. In addition to the SUV, the Yangwang brand also introduced a driving technology called “Yisifang,” which will be implemented for the first time in the Yangwang U8.

Yisifang is a wheel-side motor that powers the vehicle using four independent motors, allowing the car to achieve 360-degree steering in one spot without relying on the steering wheel for movement. This innovative technology is expected to revolutionize the way we drive.

The Yisifang technology is a four-wheel independent motor system that can control the movement of the vehicle through real-time regulation of wheel torque to assist the driver in the event of a steering wheel malfunction or tire blowout. This technology is 100% self-developed by BYD and can be applied to pure electric and hybrid platforms across a range of vehicles, including off-road vehicles, supercars, and more.

According to BYD, the electronically controlled four-wheel drive system of the Yisifang technology responds 100 times faster than traditional four-wheel drive systems. Wang Chuanfu also announced that the Yisifang technology will be included as standard equipment on all models of the Yangwang brand.

In addition to this advanced driving technology, the Yangwang U8 also boasts an IP68 motor waterproof and body sealing technology, allowing the SUV to float on water. This unique feature adds to the versatility and capability of the off-road vehicle.

Yangwang U8 electric SUV, designed by Wolfgang Joseph Eiger, boasts a unique “Gate of Time and Space” design language that combines futuristic elements with a hardcore aesthetic. The vehicle’s standout L-shaped headlights are highly recognizable when illuminated, and the grille features a dot matrix design with the brand’s logo inlaid in the center.

The SUV has a commanding presence with a length of 5300mm and a wheelbase of 3050mm. It also boasts hidden door handles, aerodynamic designs on the wheel arches, and D-pillars. The Yangwang U8 will be equipped with R20-inch wheels with 275/60 R20 tires.

At the rear, the taillights are shaped similarly to the headlights, and the tailgate, which opens sideways, is equipped with external tires. While the automaker has not yet revealed the car’s interior, previous spy shots show that it will be equipped with a full LCD instrument panel and an embedded central touch screen. The SUV also features a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, and the buttons are marked in Chinese.

Yisifang technology platform that powers the Yangwang U8 SUV features four wheels and four motors, each with a maximum power of 220-240 kW and a maximum torque of 320-420 Nm. The SUV is also equipped with blade batteries and a non-load-bearing body. It offers various driving modes for different terrains and conditions, including ice and snow, fixed circle, desert slope, flat tire to continue driving (120km/h), U-turn on the spot, and floating water mode.

The SUV also has a “crab mode” that enhances its maneuverability while off-roading and allows it to control its driving circuit surface while wading through deep water. The Yangwang U8 can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 3 seconds.

Yangwang is BYD’s new high-end sub-brand, which was announced in November 2022. According to the automaker, this luxury brand is expected to produce vehicles within the price range of 800,000 to 1.5 million yuan ($110,280 – $206,763). The Yangwang U8 is the first model from this brand, and while its price was not disclosed at the launch event, it is expected to cost around 1 million yuan.
