The Cadillac XTS will be manufactured in China before the end of the year, the Beijing Times reported today, citing a statement made by Marketing and Sales Director for Shanghai GM's Cadillac brand Chen Weixu at the recently concluded Chengdu International Motor Show.
GM CEO Dan Akerson stated earlier this month that the manufacturer will introduce a new domestically manufactured model to the Chinese market each year until 2016. The XTS (pictured above) is confirmed to be this year's model. Mr. Chen refused to confirm which model will be brought over next year. However, he added that those interested can take a look overseas and see steps GM is taking for its Cadillac brand in the US.
The speed with which Chinese production plans for new Cadillac models are implemented will be done in pace with the American market. The entry-level Cadillac ATS (pictured below) is scheduled to make its market debut in the US next month. The luxury sedan comes with 2.5 L I4 engine, a 2.0 L turbocharged engine or 3.6 L V6 engine options, driven by either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. There are speculations that the ATS will carry a 300,000 yuan ($47,434) price tag when it comes to China, which will place it in the same segment as the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4L.
Cadillac's luxury sedan sales in China over the first seven months of the year have fallen over 30 percent. SUV sales, meanwhile, have grown over 20 percent. Sales of the SRX in particular have been very particularly strong. When asked when Chinese production of the SRX will begin, Mr. Chen answered that there were no definite plans in place, adding that GM's primary goal for the Cadillac brand in China is to ensure balance between sedan and SUV sales.
