SKorea Kia Motors workers arrested for allegedly selling auto secrets to China

SEOUL (XFN-ASIA) - Five current and former employees of Kia Motors have been arrested for allegedly selling automotive technology to China, causing potential losses of billions of dollars to a key industry, prosecutors said.

The prosecutors' office in Suwon city south of Seoul said the five are accused of stealing key technical secrets regarding car assembly.

Prosecutors described the case as the country's most serious industrial espionage incident, that could cause damage of 'a few billion dollars.'

Kia, the country's second largest car maker and an affiliate of Hyundai Motor, said the industrial espionage may help China catch up with South Korea in auto making.

'We are still assesing the damage, although we are treating very seriously a case that may help China narrow the technology gap quickly with South Korea,' Kia spokesman Lee In-Ho told Agence France Presse.

Technologies allegedly sold to China were related to Kia's popular sports utility vehicle, the Sorento, and a new model that will hit the market in December, he said.

On nine occasions since last November, the accused allegedly diverted a total of 57 secrets to an unidentified Chinese auto company through a technology consulting company in South Korea.

The consultant allegedly sold Kia's intellectual property to the Chinese company for 230 mln won. It also tried to sell the technologies to another Chinese automaker, prosecutors said.

Chery QQ / Chery A5 and the V5

but thats still confirms nothing , if it was that obvious , they wouldn't have said Unidentified , and maybe its the other company that this Tech. trade company tried to sell to

And from the articles , your Korean ppl should stop stealing thier own country ..

If a Spy came from the usa to iran telling them a nuclear secret or a military or even a production or technology secret .. they will buy him !!

it would've been the same if it was vice versa ... even Toyota would've done so if it wants to aquire something better than what it has , if there is .

the problem is not with the country cought buying , its with the company cought SELLING in the first place .

"Unidentified" until the investigation is over and enough evidence could be gathered to make a diplomatic protest against China.

Off the record, Chery.

ah yes - a V5 and an A5 and what looks like a QQ.
You missed A1.

korea doesn't even have auto secrets
ate too much kimchi
SAIC, Chery, and Geely's special dish is kimchi lo mein....

koreans are truely pathetic.

An undated, unidentified photo coming from unknown source and some Chery photos found on internet is all the stupied koreans need to make up a story trying to accuse Chery. LOOOL  How pathetic can you be?????

I don't know which cave in incheon you r from but there is something called "innocent until proven guilty" here in United States. Just because these pathetic koreans are trying to stage a fraud and set up Chery doesn't mean anyone will fall for it or actually cares what koreans say.

Official protest?? Yeah, you can count on it... :D

I definitely missed something here.
Were these Koreans caught stealing/selling Korean technology, or were they stealing/selling Chery technology? Coz for the former, what do you need photos of Chery cars for, again?

Of course. This is why the investigaters refuse to formally identify Chery as the buyer of stolen tech. But for those involved in the case, it's Chery.

Official protest??
Worse yet, Hyundai lawyers could join GM lawyers with a seize court order at the unloading dock when the first Chery shipment arrives.

I definitely missed something here. or were they stealing/selling Chery technology?
Chery has no R&D, and no technology to steal from. Go to Chery's headquarter in Wuhu and they don't even have a proper R&D center there, just a factory.

Coz for the former, what do you need photos of Chery cars for, again?
Those were the Chery cars that incorporated stolen Hyundai tech, complete with how and where they were incorporated in.

In Chery's defence, Chery might not have known that the technology they received were in fact stolen, as the contract was for technical consultation. Most of Korean automobile engineering outsourcing firms(The guys who build concept cars and pre-production prototypes) are in fact doing most of their business with Chinese customers nowadays.

The difference is that while Korean consulting firms working for SAIC and Geely were doing their own R&D and selling their own tech(hence no legal issues), this particular consultant was selling stolen Hyundai tech.

But Chery has the reputation of being the world's no. 1 auto pirate and their ill reputation keeps coming back to haunt them as they grow.

hey be careful, you're driving RIHC crazy lol.:D
Chinese cars will never sell well within a decade or so in developed countries.however in the developing countries they will sell like crazy. So I think there's no worry about losing the market for American, European or Japanese cars but the Indian,Malaisian,Russian or Czech and Iranian cars the Chinese ones will beat them all.

Hey...

Ok, the investigators now confirm the company that received stolen Hyundai tech is the same company that produces the Matiz replica.

In other word, Chery.

Hey RIHC, can you provide a source or a link for this new info?? I'm not doubting you, I just want to know more details!! Also, GREAT point in your posting before this ("In Chery's defence".....) - Chery might not have known that they were buying STOLEN technology from the consulting firm in South Korea. That still doesn't make Chery completely innocent though............the "hey, we didn't know it was stolen" defense is starting to grow thin in courts nowadays.

This is STILL a big deal though.........and it COULD have a VERY negative impact on the South Korean economy sooner than later.

From September 10 last year to January 20, 2007, the consultants allegedly passed the information to Company "C" while traveling in and out of China. Company "C" has been publicly criticized for copying GM Daewoo's Matiz city car.

Wait wait wait... I thought Koreans are the most righteous, most patriotic, most "kick-butt" of all people on earth, in all of history; they wouldn't steal and aid other countries/industries now, would they??? :nono:

Since these Koreans are of an "auto-consulting firm", the buyer is very likely not aware of the fraud.

And where did you get an idea like that?

Well, Chery must have known that something was not right when they paid only $250K for a consulting on how to improve chassis assembly quality. A normal consulting contract costs tens of millions.

Regardless, it is going to get more difficult for Chery to obtain technology from Korea. Chery is on the top of Korean intelligency agency's "watch list" and any person who comes in contact with Chery by any mean(e-mail, phone-call, flights to China) are heavily monitored and harrassed.(It was the government intelligence agency that intercepted this Chery transaction and not Hyundai, which was totally clueless) Consulting firms and engineering outsourcing firms will avoid Chery like hell because doing any business with Chery mean getting government agencies constantly monitoring them.
