Johnson Controls-Saft Advanced Power Solutions to Provide Hybrid Battery System for Newest Car From Chery

Energy-conscious consumers in China will have a new hybrid option when Chery Automobile launches its new A5 ISG sedan in the latter half of 2008. Combining the advantages of fuel and electric vehicles, the new car is low in emission and fuel-consumption together with high performance. The new car will be powered by a hybrid battery system developed by Johnson Controls-Saft Advanced Power Solutions.

Chery Automobile, a major Chinese auto manufacturer, has chosen nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries from Johnson Controls-Saft for its latest vehicle. The joint venture between Johnson Controls and Saft will draw on its considerable presence worldwide for this contract. In the first phase the Ni-MH cells will be manufactured in France, development work will be carried out in the United States and the battery integration will take place in China.

"As car sales continue to significantly increase in China, Johnson Controls-Saft is committed to partnering with automakers to develop fuel-efficient vehicles for consumers who want -- and need -- to make purchasing decisions that are good for the environment," said Mary Ann Wright, who leads the Johnson Controls-Saft joint venture and is vice president and general manager of Johnson Controls' hybrid battery business.

According to Wright, the company is developing, manufacturing and integrating advanced hybrid battery systems to provide consumers with smaller and lighter batteries, which are also more powerful, durable, safe and affordable.

"With world-class engineering centers in the United States, Europe and China, we have the technical capability to partner with our customers as consumers around the world increasingly demand energy-efficient, high performance vehicles," Wright said.

In addition to its engineering center and manufacturing facility in Shanghai, Johnson Controls-Saft will also work with local engineering firms in China. According to Wright, the joint collaboration in engineering will allow experienced Johnson Controls-Saft engineers to work hand-in-hand with some of China's best young talent in the automotive industry.

"This is as much about the successful launch and ability to commercially manufacture this vehicle as it is about the development of an effective engineering team with the technical capabilities to support China's fast growing future needs in the hybrid automotive market," she said.

Johnson Controls-Saft is a joint venture that has brought together Johnson Controls -- the world's leading supplier of automotive batteries and a company deeply experienced in integrated automotive systems solutions -- with Saft, an advanced energy storage solutions provider with extensive advanced energy storage solutions expertise.

Is Chery A5 estate coming?

Pictures have come out onto the internet of a Chery A5 estate, the mock ups show what appears to be a rather good looking competitor to the Buick Excelle estate. The A5 is one of the cheaper sedans on the Chinese market, and also one of the better looking both on the inside and the out. The A5 sedan ranges from 60,280rmb to 90,380rmb for the top of the range model, engines range from 1.6 to 2.0l. We’re unsure what will go in the A5 estate, how much it will be, or when it will go into production, but we do know the A5 will make for a nice entry into the low cost estate segment.

Chery A5 hybrid to be mass-produced after Summer Olympics.

April 3, 2008 - Chery Automobile is set to mass-produce its A5 hybrid vehicles right after Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games, Beijing-based Jinhua Newspaper reported.

"A5 hybrid will be sold at prices between RMB10,000 and RMB20,000, higher-priced than the basic A5 series," said Yang Hongze, deputy general manager of Chery Automobile Sales Co Ltd.

Chery A5 is now sold between RMB69,800 ($9,950) and RMB93,800 in the Chinese market.

Chery to launch A5 1.5L model at 60,000 yuan

Shanghai, August 29, 2008 - Following the launch of the Chery A3 model next month, Chery Auto will also put the 1.5L model of its Chery A5 onto the market at a price of 60,000 yuan ($8,770) or so, said xinhuanet.com today, citing sources from the company.

The long-awaited Chery A3 model is scheduled to go on sale on September 23, and the Chery Cowin (Qiyun) 1.5L model was launched in early July as an addition to the Chery Cowin series. After the Chery A3 hits the market next month, the Chery A5 1.5L model will also go to the market to enrich the Chery A5 lineup.

The current Chery A5 series has the 1.6L, 1.8L, 2.0L models, all equipped with Chery's self-developed ACTECO engines and priced at 69,800-93,800 yuan, but the forthcoming Chery A5 1.5L model will carry the same SQR477F engine as the Chery Cowin 1.5L model, with its selling price at about 60,000 yuan. The Chery A3 series also has the 1.8L and 2.0L models.

Re: Chery A5

This should clear off the rumour that Chery used the SEAT Toledo chassis without paying.

http://translate.google.com/transla...l-seat-toledo.html&sl=es&tl=en&hl=en&ie=UTF-8

It says clearly that Chery has gain authorization to market the Cowin in Europe which we all know based on the chassis of SEAT Toledo.

Could Chery really gain the authorization in Europe if the Cowin is the pirated version of SEAT Toledo.

January 12, 2008 - Chery have finally launched their Chery A5 hybrid sedan, but is it a real hybrid? Chery are playing catch up to the world headline catching BYD F3 Dual Mode hybrid sedan from souther car makers, BYD. Chery have enlisted the help of British engineering firm, Ricardo, to aid them in their designing of hybrid models, but is the A5 BSG a true hybrid?

We’ve become conditioned to the automotive hybrid as being a joint gasoline, electric engine, but the Chery A5 BSG appears to be a Belt Driven Starter Generator, hence the name BSG. This is essentially a stop and start system which more expensive cars, such as the new Landrover Freelander utilize. The Stop Start system is not an entirely new system, certain 80’s cars such as the VW Polo of the day, and also a Golf. Citroen fitted a much nicer version to their C2 and C3 in 2006.

Essentially, the BSG is a mild hybrid. This means that the starter motor is slightly larger than usual, and allows the cars engine to be turned off when coasting, braking, or stopped.

The most exciting aspect of the Chery A5 BSG is its price: a mere 74,800rmb can get you a hybrid car on the road, thats $10,940USD. That price is a lot lower than the BYD F3 DM which came in 149,800rmb, and with the A5 BSG, you dont have the problem of having to charge your car up everynight. On the downside, you could probably charge your F3DM up for pennies (or Fen) overnight, but you have to fill your A5BSG with a few hundred RMB every other week.

The odd thing is, Chery have only planned to make 5000 A5 BSG units in 2009, which may well be a conservative underestimate in terms of demand for this car. Chinese consumers, like any consumers, like to save money, and if they can buy a car that looks great, and saves them money on fuel over a similarly priced non hybrid model, then they are likely to choose the A5 BSG.

The A5 is not going to be the last Chery to get the BSG treatment, Chery is also planning to pass on the BSG technology to the Chery A3, and the Chery A1 lines. Media reports indicate that Chery are aiming to take their BSG technology to North American markets in 2013, which will give them more than enough time to mature the technology, as well as their safety, to suit highly scepticle American audiences.

^^ sort of hybrid cars like this is not very strong in China, so they need to start small first and test the market.

This seems to be the future of the Chery A5. Its platform will be based on the current model to reduce development cost. The launching will have to be in 2010, with sales in 2011.

Is it really worth the effort? This kind of hybrid is more eyewash than anything else, and will soon be obsolete. The bottom line is mpg (kpl). How economical is it over the ICE 2%, 5%, 7%? My guess is not much.
I'm surprised that they are going to the trouble.
